Falana Slams El-Rufai Says You Lack Power To Declare Labour Leaders Wanted

0

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has slammed Kaduna State governor, Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, for declaring President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba and other union leaders wanted.

Recall that, the NLC had on Monday embarked on a massive protest and strike to press home their demand bordering on mass sack of workers in the state. The strike has paralysed critical sectors of the economy in the State.

Our correspondent gathered that the governor declared Wabba and other labour leaders wanted for leading the protest and crippling economic activities in the state.

‘Hired’ thugs were also reported to have attacked the peaceful protesters during the demonstration.

But reacting to El-Rufai’s declaration in a statement, Falana described as ‘laughable’ the claim that the labour leaders contravened the provisions of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

“The statement is laughable as it is common knowledge that Comrade Wabba and his colleagues are on the streets of Kaduna leading the peaceful protests embarked upon by the entire workers in the State since yesterday. The order of the Governor cannot be enforced for the following reasons:

“By the combined effect of the Trade Union Act and the Nigerian Constitution, Comrade Wabba and other labour leaders have the unquestionable rights to participate in the peaceful warning strike and mass protests against further retrenchment of workers in the Kaduna State public service.

“The Miscellaneous Offences Act is not a state statute but a federal enactment. To that extent, if Governor El Rufai has evidence that Comrade Wabba and other labour leaders have contravened any provisions of the Act he is required to lodge a complaint in any of the police stations in Kaduna State.

“The Governor lacks the power to declare any alleged offender wanted under the Act or any other law whatsoever,” Falana said.

The senior lawyer, however, called on the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ignore El-Rufai’s statement.

Kaduna Crisis: NUPENG Threatens Nationwide Strike, Warns El-Rufai

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened a nationwide shutdown over the faceoff between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Kaduna State government.

Labour had declared a five-day warning strike over some policies of Governor Nasir El-Rufai, especially the sacking of 4,000 workers.

El-Rufai later likened the protesters in his state to bandits and vowed that their action would not make his government reverse its decision.

Some protesters were also attacked by hired thugs.

In a statement, the National President of the NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, said the union which is one of the 46 bodies affiliated with the NLC, is observing the Kaduna situation closely.

He said if the attacks on protesters continue, NUPENG would withdraw its services nationwide.

“The Leadership of the Union is therefore calling on the Federal Government to immediately call on Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to order before his arrogance and power drunk ego further push the situation into horrendous calamity as he has been doing in all issues relating to human lives and wellbeing.

“Consequently, the Union reiterates that no Labour Leaders or workers as the case may be, be harmed, harassed, maimed, humiliated or victimized during this 5-day peaceful protests in the State.

“Our Union is raising this alarm following the very reliable report of the clandestine move of Governor Nasir El-RUfai to hurt and put the lives of NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and other Labour Leaders to danger in his usual blind egotistical style of running government in the State

“NUPENG therefore warns that if any harm is inflicted on any of the members of organized Labour, the Leadership of the Union will not hesitate to call on all our members throughout the nation for a total shut down of all our services in the upstream, mid-stream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry.

“In the light of the above, we are therefore putting all NUPENG members nationwide on red alert and may at very short notice of five hours call for a nationwide industrial action if situation arises.

“Our solidarity remains constant for the Union makes us strong,” the statement read

N10bn Scandal: Fresh Crisis Rocks PDP As EFCC Goes After Top Officials

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has invited officials of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of funds and fraud.

Recall that barely a month after a chieftain in the PDP, Kazeem Afegbua, petitioned the anti-graft agency to scrutinise the Secondus-led National Working Committee on financial misappropriation.

The agency, requested the party’s National chairman to release the National Auditor, National Organising Secretary and Director of Finance to report at the EFCC headquarters from May 19th to 21st 2021.

The agency also requested the national officers to honor the invitation with relevant documents relating to sole of forms into the party’s elective positions from January 2017 to date.

Kazeem had in his petition alleged that much of the financial transactions of the PDP under Prince Uche Secondus has been shrouded in mystery, accusing the leadership of deliberate attempt to shortchange the party in the build up to the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile , Secondus had since denied the allegation and filed a N1 billion suit against the petitioner, Kazeem Afegbua.

Emir of Kano, Others Escape Death As Abuja-bound Max Air Develops Engine Fault

0

A Kano-Abuja Max Air plane on Tuesday developed engine failure 10 minutes after take off from the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), causing fear among passengers.

The Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, was among the many passengers onboard the faulty plane.

The Max Air aircraft, marked VM1645, was scheduled to take off by 1.30 pm.

It however, took off at 2:00 pm, 30 minutes behind departure time, our correspondent learnt.

10 minutes after take-off, the aircraft, filled with passengers to the brim, reportedly began to “swerve around the air” until it made a detour for an emergency landing.

We gathered the incident was caused by an “engine failure.”

Max Air had not spoken on the incident yet as at press time.

A palace source, who was also onboard the plane, confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying “we smelt death.”

One of the passengers, Dr Samaila Suleiman, said it was “a near-death incident,” as he accused the airline of negligence.

According to him; “I heard a strange sound during the take-off but I waved it. I have been flying by aircraft many times but I have never heard such a sound during take-off.

“The sound was strange but I dismissed any strange feeling of insecurity.

“No radio announcement was even made until we saw ourselves back at the airport where we took off.

It was a near-death experience. I and many other passengers were traumatised. Many of us canceled the trip and returned home,” Suleiman said.

However, Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and some of the other passengers were still flown to Abuja in the same Max Air plane after it was fixed.

Kaduna: FG To Intervene As El-Rufai, Labour Remain Adamat

0

The government of the federation has said that it will wade into the labour impasse currently rocking Kaduna State following commencement of 5-day warning strike by organised labour in the state, which on Tuesday took a violent turn.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said the government will invite labour leaders for a dialogue while calling on the Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai to also extend the olive branch.

Recall that thugs on Tuesday disrupted the peaceful procession of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and affiliated unions in Kaduna, after pelting the protesters who had converged at the NEPA roundabout in the city centre.

The labour activists were in the streets as part of the second day of 5-day warning strike to protest the mass sack of workers in the state when they came under attack.

Security agents were forced to use teargas and shot severally in the air to disperse the thugs. The workers were also forced to retreat.

The Kaduna State Government came under attack over attack on the unionists with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) threatening to shut down all of its facilities nationwide if any of the labour leaders are hurt.

We reports that the day had started amidst palpable tension following a tweet by Governor El-Rufai, declaring the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba and other union leaders wanted for economic sabotage and attack on public infrastructure.

El-Rufai said that , a “handsome reward” awaits anyone who knows where the labour leader was hiding and sends a message to the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice.

Less than two hours after the tweet, the governor came within 100 meters of the union leaders when Wabba led a large procession to the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House had lingered at the NEPA roundabout where the governor’s siren blaring convoy passed beside them.

The governor’s convoy passed beside the protesters to the nearby gates of the headquarters of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, about 100 from the NLC members.

The gates of the distribution company were quickly opened and the governor’s convoy moved in. Ten minutes later, El-Rufai’s convoy emerged from the premises of Kaduna electric and left through an opposite route avoiding the protesters who were still at the NEPA roundabout.

FG Set To Remove Petrol Subsidy, Says Minister

0

The Federal Government is set to remove subsidy on petrol , the Minister of State for Petroleum Timipre Sylva has said.

The minister told reporters there is no going back on the decision because the government can no longer afford it.

Sylva explained that although withdrawal of subsidy will be painful initially, it will pay off for the poor in the long run.

Saying, the present arrangement favours a few rich individuals and firms.

Recall that Labour yesterday described the plan to remove subsidy as an attempt to punish the people for government’s inefficiency.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said although desirable, government needs a stable policy in the petroleum industry.

The minister lamented that but for the provision of cash from signature businesses from Marginal Oil fields by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the shortfall in remittance into the Federal Account last month would have been unbearable for the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Not forthcoming on the actual augmentation figure and how long the DPR will continue to intervene, Sylva said: “I cannot say exactly what the figure is. I will have to check with the DPR to get you the figure. Of course, you know that the DPR has always contributed to the federation revenue because they collect royalties and so on

“But as to filling the gap, it will not always be there, it is not as if the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that after last month, they will not be able to. You may not know when next they will announce it. So, you cannot say that they (DPR) will continue to fill in the gap.

“NNPC announced that they could not make contributions to FAAC and the DPR came to the rescue.

“Luckily the DPR was in the position to step in and the marginal field revenues were used to fill the gap.

Sylva added: “Labour and the Federal Government are not on different pages. Even Labour understands but what we have agreed is that we need to have an alternative and the process of putting it in place is what is ongoing.”

The minister, who spoke to reporters in Abuja, said: “Subsidy removal will come with some pains but the question is, can we continue with petroleum subsidy as a country? If we cannot continue, what options do we have?

“I think the best is take out subsidy. From the government of ex-Military President Ibrahim Babangida in the 80s, it has defied all efforts to withdraw petrol subsidy. Diesel is now deregulated, Kerosine is now deregulated but petrol has defied deregulation. Should we continue with this subsidy?

Abuja Indigenes Advocate for Mayoral status, Launch Community Mayoral Election

0

Abuja Original Inhabitant Youths Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO), has advocated for the nation’s capital to be given Mayoral status. This, according to them is to ensure effective inclusiveness in governance.

The group also addd that, the lack of community participation in the decision making process puts the indigenes in jeopardy and at the losing end, saying, the principal concern for local administration in the FCT ought to be that of local service delivery.

Saying, we (Indigenes) have decided to change the narrative and rewrite history by organizing a Community Mayoral Election, where leaders will be closer to the people to know their plights and fashion out ways to solve them.

AOIYEO made this known on Tuesday at a press conference to herald the planned Mayoral Election proposed for 18th of May, 2021.

The Secretary General of the Organisation, Yahuza Abubakar, said Abuja deserves leadership that will reflect the mind of young, ambitious, and scrappy nature of its growing electorates.

He, however, explained that the expected Mayor of FCT would be a non-partisan office where, despite individual party affiliations, candidates are not selected by any parties or represented by any political party on the ballot paper.

He also hinted that section 301 of the Nigerian constitution, which made the President as Governor of the FCT and the vice president, the Deputy Governor, also permits the president to appoint a minister who exercises powers delegated by the President in place since 1976, successive Presidents have utilized this power, notwithstanding its inherent flaws.

His words ; “Abuja’s leaders have owed their mandate to the President, not to the people. We have witnessed celebrated Nigerian Governors drawing support for policies, taking direction from their electorate, except in the FCT.

“The Minister owes her mandate to the President; the citizens of the state have little influence on policy concerning community security, socio-economic and political developments or evolvement.

” FCT Community Mayor will be elected and recommended to the Minister for appointments, in order enhance citizens-government relationship.

” The Community Mayor will also work hand in hand with the minister/Presidents to avoid disenfranchisement of original Abuja citizens, who are mostly treated with disregard, and further bring Federal government policy closer to the Abuja original inhabitants.

“The FCT Community Mayor when elected, will represent FCC with representatives across all communities within FCT, who shall have the responsibilities to furnish the Mayor with information concerning community and youth demands, security challenges as encountered by the Emir or Chief in their kingdom and all others socio-economic request to the Mayor, who shall relay same Mayor to government through the FCT Minister.

He continued; “We believe that if this election is conducted and the right people, which are the Mayor and 62 Councillors of the FCT, are elected into offices, it will also go along way to curbing crimes and other social vices in the FCT, because it would help in engaging more youths positively when the opportunities arise.

“Mayoral candidates would also be required to have been resident in the city of Abuja for at least 10 years, perhaps even having contributed to the city’s coffers through payment of tax.

“The process of the election into the office of Mayor of FCT will be indirect election, and will be conducted by carefully selected 20 delegates by Community Chiefs and Emirs representing the Six Area Council which include: Abaji, Kuje. Kwali. Gwagwalada, Bwari and AMAC”, the group stated.

NAFDAC Grants Conditional Emergency Use Authorization for Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine

0

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye on Tuesday granted conditional Emergency Use Authorization for Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine to prevent COVID-19 in people from eighteen (18) years of age.

She said that after a thorough evaluation, the NAFDAC Vaccine Committee concluded that the data on the vaccine were robust and met criteria for efficacy, safety and quality.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

She stated that, the data also show that the vaccine’s known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks thereby supporting the manufacturer’s recommended use. Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine is the third vaccine recommended in Nigeria for preventing COVID-19.

Speaking on the vaccine efficacy, Adeyeye said that the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine is administered as a single dose. Results from a clinical trial involving people in the United States, South Africa and Latin American countries found that Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine was effective at preventing COVID-19 in people from 18 years of age.

The Phase III clinical trial involved over 44,000 people. Half received a single dose of the vaccine and half were given placebo (a dummy injection). People did not know if they had been given Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine or placebo.
The trial found a 67% reduction in the number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases after 2 weeks in people who received Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine. The most commonly reported side effects were pain at the injection site, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and nausea. Most of these side effects were mild to moderate in severity and lasted 1-2 days.

While reacting to Vaccine safety, she added that, in line with the NAFDAC’s Pharmacovigilance and safety monitoring plan for COVID-19 vaccines, Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine will be closely monitored and subject to several activities that apply specifically to COVID-19 vaccines.

Manufacturers are required to provide monthly safety reports in addition to the regular updates generated by NAFDAC activities.
Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine works by preparing the body to defend itself against COVID-19.

Unopened vaccine vials can be stored and/or transported frozen at -25°C to – 15°C for up to 24 months and 3 months when stored at 2 to 8°C.

The Ministry of Health and National Primary Health Care Development Agency will announce when the vaccine becomes available for use in Nigeria.

Breaking : FBI Arrests Gov Dapo Abiodun’s Aide, Abidemi Rufai In New York Over Employment Scam

0

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested Abidemi Rufai, a Senior Special Assistant to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, over $350,000 employment fraud.

Rufai was arrested on Friday evening at the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York based on criminal complaint.

He was subsequently charged with defrauding Washington State Employment Security Department of over $350,000.

The US Department of Justice, District of Washington, 42-year-old Rufai was alleged to have used the pseudonym Sandy Tang and the stolen identities of more than 100 Washington residents to file fraudulent claims with Employment Security Department for unemployment benefits last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting US Attorney Tessa Gorman said, “Rufai also filed fraudulent unemployment claims with Hawaii, Wyoming, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, and Pennsylvania. Rufai used variations of a single e-mail address in a manner intended to evade automatic detection by fraud systems. By using this practice, Rufai made it appear that each claim was connected with a different email account.”

The criminal complaint also said Rufai mailed some of the proceeds of his fraud to the Jamaica and New York addresses of his relatives with more than $288,000 deposits between March and August 2020.

“Since the first fraud reports to our office in April 2020, we have worked diligently with a federal law enforcement team to track down the criminals who stole funds designated for pandemic relief,” said Gorman. “This is the first, but will not be the last, significant arrest in our ongoing investigation of ESD fraud.”

Special Agent in Charge FBI Seattle, Donald Voiret, said, “Greed is a powerful motivator. Unfortunately, the greed alleged to this defendant affects all taxpayers. The FBI and our partners will not stand idly by while individuals attempt to defraud programs meant to assist American workers and families suffering the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Rufai made his initial appearance last Saturday in New York and he is scheduled for a detention hearing Wednesday. Rufai risks 30 years in prison if found guilty of wire fraud.
