The rally started at unity fountain and terminated at the National Assembly with workers carrying play cards of various inscriptions that based described their grievances.

Speaking in Abuja at the rally, the President Nigeria labor Congress Comrade Ayubba wabba said that the future is doomed for any country who does not priortise its education section.

Ayubba further attributed the security challenges bedeviling the country, to the high level of illiteracy and poverty.

Noting that most of those at the helm of affairs currently were beneficiaries of a thriving education sector in the past as they enjoyed free and quality education

Wabba also wrote off insinuations by the Federal Government that their rally will lead to civil disturbances, saying on the contrary the actions of the government are fueling social disturbances.

He said nowhere in the world that protesters denied their right to protest except in Nigeria.

He also criticised the no work no pay policy of the government with respect to the ongoing strike in the universities, describing such actions as draconian laws.

Ayubba added that if the mega protest does not yield positive result, NLC would not hesitate to embark on a nation wide strike.

The NLC President later presented to the Green and Red Chambers a document containing their demands on how to bring to an end, the ongoing strike in Nigerian universities.

In their responses, Hon. Ali Wudil and Senator Ajayi Borofice who represented the Speaker House of Representatives and Senator President respectively, promised a timely and prompt intervention on the matter.

They stated that since the beginning of the strike action, the National Assembly has been consulting relevant stakeholders with a view to ending the crises.

Tax Returns: FCT minister advises high-income individuals against presenting fake information on tax returns

0

Malam Muhammad Bello, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has cautioned high-income individuals who offer misleading information about their income to stop.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Bello issued the warning at a one-day tax seminar titled “Reviving the Tax Culture of Filing Tax Returns,” which was organized by the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS).

Alhaji Lukman Agboola, the Mandate Secretary of FCT Economic Planning, Revenue Generation, and Public-Private Partnership, represented the minister.

He said it was worrisome that only 10 per cent of registered residents of the FCT are contributing to the maintenance and development of the territory by paying their taxes.

” As you are all aware, one of the canons of taxation is
fairness, such that payment of tax is proportional to the
income of the person.

” Therefore, tax should be equitable in a way that amount of tax payable should be proportionate to income.

” It is however worrisome that, according to reports reaching
me, only 10 per cent of registered residents of the FCT are contributing to the maintenance and development of the Territory by paying their taxes.

” This needs to change, both for fairness and entrenchment
of the rule of law. We must begin to treat tax evasion as the
crime that it is, ” he said.

Bello encouraged all residents of the FCT to take filing of
returns as an obligatory and necessary step towards
Supporting the socio-infrastructural development of FCT.

” We must understand that taxation is not just a means of
providing funds for services and infrastructure, it is also a
means for the high earners to contribute for the upliftment
of the quality of life of the low earners.”

The minister commended the FCT-IRS for its foresight
in holding the seminar aimed at
enlightening taxpayers of their very important civic responsibility of filing tax returns.

” It is my hope that this seminar will chart a way for the
FCT Internal Revenue Service to improve compliance to tax
payment and the proper declaration of all income by all
residents.”

In his keynote address, the Managing Director, JK Consulting, Dr James Naiveju, urged legislature, the judicial, public servants and professional to ensure timely and complete filing of their tax returns.

Naiveju said if all FCT residents agree to file their tax returns effectively and it would enhance the economy and reduce the rate of poverty.

He, however, urged the FCT-IRS to simplify the process of tax returns by making it electronically that could be accessible by with smart phones and other devices.

” A proud residents of the Federal Capital Territory has a moral and civil responsibility to file their tax returns with utmost patriotism to the fatherland.

” There must also be patriotism, determination, political will on the part of the authority to ensure that citizens file their tax returns as at when due.”

***Scavengers feed on scrap.

More illegal structures in Abuja’s ever busy Jabi Motor Park were destroyed on Tuesday by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

This is part of a larger demolition effort to reinstate the Abuja master plan, which some property owners have violated.

The Scavengers were thoroughly enjoying the scrap during the final phase of the park’s deconstruction in the Lagos Line location, despite the significant presence of combined security personnel.

The primary goal of the clean-up, according to Comrade Ikharo Attah, Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement to the Minister of FCT, was to dismantle any unauthorized buildings and return the original master plan.

He also explained that most of the buildings failed integrity test while others and cannot be allowed to stand because of contravention

Attah stated that the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, malam Muhammad Bello has given the demolition team the mandate to bring about sanity by removing all illegal structures to pave way for the new approved Jabi motor Park plan.

According to Attah: ” Yesterday, we removed the illegal structures and today we are removing those structures that are death traps and have failed integrity tests as well, the exercise is not limited to insecurity.

“The Scavengers are not stopping us from doing our work, but we are disturbed because they have taken over the whole place” Attah said.

However, one of the traders at the scene, Joy Johnson decried the demolition and described it as frustrating of common people.

“I didn’t feel good, other traders were not happy. It is frustrating. We are very angry because we don’t know what the country is turning into, does it mean the government wants us to be roaming the street?

“We deserve to be given two to three years demolition notice, how can people be treated this way?.

Monkeypox : Public Health Emergency of Global Concern – WHO

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) activated its highest alert level on Saturday due to the spreading monkeypox outbreak, classifying the virus as a public health emergency of global significance.

The head of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Grebreyesus, at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, stated that the committee tasked with advising him on public health emergencies was unable to come to a decision, but he has chosen to make the decision to bring the disease under control.

This pronouncement, which comes after a meeting of a committee of experts, was made for the eighth time since 2009, the most recent being for Covid-19, which received the same classification from the WHO in 2020, and follows a meeting of a committee of experts on Thursday.

In a statement made public by WHO, it stated that :”A public health emergency of international concern @ or PHEIC is defined by the WHO’s international health regulations as “an extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other states through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response.”

“The UN health agency said the term implies the situation is serious, sudden, unusual or unexpected, that it carries implications for public health beyond national borders, and that it may require immediate international attention.

” Ghebreyesus, further said that  the failure of the committee who reviewed the latest data on Thursday, in reaching a consensus. made him decide to break the deadlock by declaring a PHEIC.

“Nine members of the committee voted against the declaration, while six voted for the declaration in what Dr. Ghebreyesus said was not a formal vote.

“In short, we have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly through new modes of transmission about which we understand too little and which meets the criteria in the international health regulations,” he said.

“For all of these reasons I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a global health emergency of international concern.

“While he said the risk of monkeypox was “moderate” globally, it was “high” in Europe and there was “a clear risk of further international spread”.

“Globally, there have so far been 16,016 monkeypox cases 4,132 of which were in the past week, according to WHO data. It is now in 75 countries and territories and there have been five deaths.

“The European region has the highest number of total cases, at 11,865, and the highest increase in the last seven days, with 2,705”.

Dr Rosamund Lewis, the technical lead for monkeypox at the WHO health emergencies programme, said: “There’s a lot of work to be done.”

She said action must be taken to establish what causes risk and to reduce situations that could put people at risk so they can protect themselves. “This is how we will get to the end of this outbreak,” she said.

Monkeypox is a viral infection typically found in animals in central and western Africa, although it can cause outbreaks in humans. Cases are occasionally identified in countries where the virus is not endemic, but the latest outbreak has been unprecedented.

While countries in Europe have been hardest hit, cases have also been reported in the US, Canada, Australia, Nigeria, Israel, Brazil and Mexico among others.

The WHO said the outbreak was largely among men who have sex with men who had reported having sex recently with new or multiple partners. However, experts have stressed that anyone can get monkeypox as it is spread by close or intimate contact, with the UN having warned that some media portrayals of Africans and LGBTQ+ people “reinforce homophobic and racist stereotypes and exacerbate stigma.”

Dr Michael Ryan, the executive director of the WHO emergencies programme, said: “We all know how difficult it has been historically to deal with issues like this because of stigma.”

“If nothing else this is about enlightened self-interest,” he added, as well as “solidarity” with those affected.

Senate Thumbs up for FCTA on Infrastructure Provision

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) received high commendation from federal lawmakers for the volume of projects completed within the territory, despite the shortage of financing allocated to various economic sectors.

Sen. Tolu Odebiyi, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) gave the commendation on certain important infrastructure projects that were still under development on Thursday in Abuja.

Odebiyi expressed satisfaction with the level of completion of most of the projects he had examined and promised that the national assembly would give any project that required urgent attention top priority.

According to him: “As you know, part of our responsibility is to provide oversight duties as part of other legislative duties and what we’ve seen today has been quite interesting. We believe that in the twilight of this administration which is about 10 months or there about, it is important that we catalogue all the projects that has been done, prioritize the ones that must be completed before the end of this term so that we can make sure that we provide the adequate funding and budgets for such projects. The FCT budget is going to be forwarded to us soon and it’s important that we come and see the state of the work and their completion rate.

“We will make sure that any of the projects that requires priority is given the due attention so as to elevate and increase efficiency.”

Speaking on what to expect from law makers in terms of approval of funds for critical projects, the chairman said, “We will wait for the Honourable Minister and his team to present us with their budgets they will catalogue what their priority projects are and based on what funding available and what revenue they have been able to generate, we will try and see how we can approve those fundings adequately.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of the FCT,  Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello, while taking the law makers through projects at Wuye, Ring Road 1 interchange at Kaura District, Southern Parkway, said the present Administration has been able to achieve much success due to the smooth relationship between the FCTA and National Assembly.

He added that with the challenge of paucity of funds, the FCT administration decided to prioritize key infrastructure projects based on their impact to residents.

According to Bello : “What we did was because of paucity of funds, we decided to prioritize key infrastructure projects to get them completed and in deciding the ones that fits into that category, we look at the ones that will give maximum benefit to the maximum number of people. If you noticed, all the four projects we went to day are all road projects that are meant to link one section of the Abuja city to the other and that’s the whole idea. The master plan has been designed in such a way that the road networks are supposed to complement each other and if you finish one portion and don’t do the other, then you don’t get the full utility of that particular road.

“Our intention is that as we round up the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, we intend to complete a number of projects and some of them we intend to develop them to the level where the next administration will be able to complete them within a very short period. Ultimately the objective is to make Abuja a vibrant city, a city where people will feel comfortable, where there are no traffic gridlock and where facilities will work. Working together with the national assembly, and I’m sure we will be able to achieve that.”

The minister, however, stressed that the need to fast track the provision of infrastructure to meet the pace of its population surge has been quite challenging.

He added that, “Running a mega city is a huge challenge and as we all know over the past five years, demographically Abuja has changed tremendously. As a matter of fact, scientific reports have clearly indicated that Abuja is one of the fastest growing city in the world. So one of the major challenge is to be able to fast-track provision of infrastructure at the pace that will match the population growth. But more importantly, as the city continues to mature, many of the infrastructure of previous years are also maturing and requiring constant maintenance and this is one area we are deploying resources to make sure that while we build new infrastructure, we make sure that existing infrastructure is catered for. In the past and even presently projects are done diligently to the highest international standards that is why you see many of the bridges even though they are about 30 years old, they still remain solid and we want to extend their lifespan by making sure that we emphasis on maintenance while we continue to develop and construct, we are also going to maintain.

Some of the projects visited include the Southern Parkway, Ring Road 1 interchange at Kaura District, ongoing Rehabilitation and expansion of the OSEX road, the B6/B12, ongoing renovation of the NASS complex.

When completed, the 65km OSEX road is expected to link to Gwagwalada, and Wasa affordable housing area, Guzape.

The FCT Minister said the next phase of the road may be completed on a Public Private Partnership bases, as the road is critical to the next phase of the city’s development.

FCT Tasks Team Bursts Illegal Cannabis Farm

0

***As FCT Minister Authorized Massive Cleanup of Utako, Environs

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Thursday burst an illegal farm used in growing cannabis in one of the undeveloped plots.

This is coming as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister , Malam Muhammad Musa Bello ordered aggressive and massive sanitation in Utako, Jabi parks, Wuye District and its environs, in order to tackle enviromental degradation and other illegalities in the Districts.

The leader of the Ministerial Tasks Team on City Sanitation who is also the Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to FCT Minister, Comrade Ikharo Attah made this known on Thursday in Abuja.

He , however, bemoaned the activities by some lawless persons that were  gradually turning the Utako and Jabi parks areas to places that jeopardise both health and security of the city.

He also lamented that even the scavengers that took over a nearby undeveloped plots around the districts, have added growing cannabis to their other illegal activities and the plant has been forwarded to the NDLEA for further investigation.

According to Attah: ” A number of illicit car lots, mechanic shops, places of worship, roadside vendors, and a known scavengers colony have been forced to relocate dramatically as a result of the sanitation project that started on Thursday morning.

“I was saddened when he recently inspected activities in and around these Districts, according to Ikharo Attah, who also said that residents have abused the administration’s propensity to uphold the law to a great extent.

He noted with dismay,  that the residents had taken for granted the administration’s decision to use stakeholders engagement and respect for human rights in dealing with developmental issues before any enforcement.

According to him, the sanitation would remain a priority of the administration until total sanity was restored and the environment reclaimed for better developmental projects.

He further stated that: ” what is going on here is a total clean up in Utako, Wuye and Tunde Idiagbon connecting point . The Minister gave us the order and we started the joint operations this morning.

” At this place we are removing Baban Bola, you could be shocked seeing a matured grown cannabis.  We have been seeing them regularly within the Baban Bola colonies. It is not safe for people to stay here, especially when Baban Bola take over a karelia expanse of land like this.

” Both environmental,  security and planning issues are reasons why we are carrying out this massive clean up exercise and I believe the whole of this road stretch will wear a new look in the next one week “.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Director of Enforcement in Abuja Environmental Protection Board ( AEPB) Kaka Bello, said the clean up had become necessary following reports of security breaches coming from the Scavengers colony.

Bello who admitted that the areas pose challenges, also explained that the administration’s resolve to sustain the clean up exercise was justifiable, as the areas had been severally sanitised, but the lawless occupants refused to give up.

He also explained that the administration had reached out to the owners of the empty plots with several notices, and may take actions if such owners refuse to commence development after three months.

He noted that ” this is a place with a lot of challenges.  The Baban Bola colony here is not just constituting environmental, but security  challenges and that is why we are here.

” We came here yesterday to give them notice, beside the notices we have been giving them.

” The measures we have is to ensure continuous enforcement.  Just as you clean your house every day, we will continue to enforce compliance.

” Beside that FCTA has directed that all plot owners should come and take ownership of their properties within three months.  That is those that have building plan approval, and those who don’t have should also come forward, or appropriate actions will be taken”.

Nigeria Is Not Likely To Meet The 2030 Goal To End Tuberculosis

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that although Nigeria is unlikely to cure tuberculosis by 2030, TB cases would begin to drop.

The UN body said that there is a chance we will hit our goal by 2035 if we do things correctly.

presenting during a webinar on the subject: “The Mission to End TB by 2030. How far are we? “According to Dr. Amos Omoniyi, WHO Professional Officer on Tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria, there is a need to mobilize sufficient local resources in order to fight the dreaded illness. He claimed that 70% of the TB budget for 2021 was unfunded.

According to him:” the number falling ill with TB incidence in 2020 are 452,000. (Meaning, one person every minute). TB incidence rate 2020 is 219 per 100,000 population.
TB death rate in 2020 is 75 per 100,000 population.
The number of deaths in 2020 is 156,000 (meaning one person every three minutes due of (TB).

” To end TB in Nigeria, we must implement data driven evidence based and technology enhanced interventions as contained in the NSP/lesson learnt. Mobilize adequate domestic resources and 70 percent of the TB budget in 2021 was unfunded”.

In addition, the Deputy Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership in Geneva, Dr. Sahu Suvanand, noted that globally $250 billion is needed annually to combat TB.

He, therefore, urged Nigeria to increase domestic funding through the budget.
Also, Dr Chukwuma Anyaike, the Director and National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program at Federal Ministry of Health said WHO’s post 2015 End TB strategy was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2014 aimed to end the global TB epidemic as part of the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals.

He said it serves as a blue print for countries to reduce TB incidences by 80 percent, TB deaths by 90 percent and to eliminate catastrophic cost for TB affected households by 2030. The strategy is not a “one size fits all” approach and its success depends on adaptation for diverse country setting.

While profiling TB cases in Nigeria, Anyaike said , Nigeria ranked 6th among the high TB burden countries and first in Africa. Triple high burden for TB, TB/HIV and MDR-TB. The incidence of all forms of TB is 219/100,000 population ( More than 400,000 cases each year) . Nigeria is among the ten countries that accounted for 70 percent of the global gap and stands as priority for ending TB in the world. 91 percent of TB patients in the country are affected by catastrophic cost.

Earlier in her address of welcome, the acting Chair of the Nigeria Stop TB Partnership, Dr. Queen Ogbuji Oladipo said the webinar is for stakeholders to discuss and promote awareness to make sure that issues around TB are always on the news.

One of the TB survivors, Adebola Tope Adams said the government should declare a state of emergency on all forms of TB by employing both preventive and curative measures.

She also added that, there is a need for production of TB vaccine.

Wuye residents are made aware of the planned demolition – FCTA

0

***Vows To Revoke Abandoned Plots

Owners of undeveloped landed property in several areas of Wuye District have been advised by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to get the property developed right away or face revocation.

Tpl. Umar Shuiabu, the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), issued this warning when he oversaw the ministerial joint taskforce on sensitization and inspection of affected areas of Wuye prior to its planned demolition of illegal structures in that District.

According to him: “We have many environmental, security and aesthetic challenges in parts of Abuja, including this area, and this calls for senitation of such places.

“Abuja is a planned and a beautiful city with world class infrastructure not seen in some countries, so we must not give anyone reason to question the sanity of this city.

“We have constructed beautiful road network here buy what we can see is illegal use of the road by mechanics and hawkers, among others. This has rendered this road impassable. We want to remove this embarkment, and give opportunity to all citizens and plot owners to use this road.

“Infact, there are other places also where these scavangers have taken over, we will do whatever that is legally possible to clear them. It is not only here, but in every other part of the city where illegality exist, we will remove it, till the time we will we have money to provide the infrastructure”.

Speaking on the risk of revocation of undeveloped plots, the AMMC boss said the FCTA was going to revoke and reallocate to those who willing and able to develop the area, “Instead of allowing it to lay fallow.

He added that, “Instead of developing this land, they leave the land and make it turn into a challenge for the city management.

“We have already provided infrastructure and the plot owners have not taken over. We are going to give them final notice if they don’t develop it we are going to revoke it and give it to those who will develop.

“The ultimatum is already in the papers for the land and we have power to revoke the land”.

Meanwhile, the SSA to the Minister on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement, Comrade Ikharo Attah hinted that the “Minister went round the area and it was very clear what he wanted.

“He wanted a massive cleanup of the entire area around Utako motor park, along Tunde Idiagbon Way, shouldn’t have nothing of illegality considering what he stood for during his life, and it is an all-encompassing job, which comprises of illegal motor parks, truck parks, babanbola, illegal Pantakers, and others.

“The Minister also directed that all illegal structures and several contraventions that run short of AEPB Act and Tegional Planning Act should be removed and cleaned up in line with the Abuja Master Plan”.

Ikharo assured: “In less than a week Utako will wear new look”.

While corroborating AMMC coordinator point on revocation, Attah said: “The Minister is very clear about it (revocation of undeveloped plots). He asked the Acting Director of Development Control to go with his team of town planners, inform and notify the plot owners take over their plots within a stipulated period, else the plots will be recommended to the Minister for revocation. We cannot have plots being a hide-out for criminals”, he warned.

On his part, Head, Monitoring and Enforcement, AEPB, Kaka Bello explained that his team had served them, but was dissatisfied with the level of compliance.

FCT Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Finishing Major Infrastructure Projects

0

Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to seeing the nation’s capital’s major infrastructure projects through to completion.

While also stating that the Administration would keep working to build the territory’s infrastructure in order to ensure that citizens benefit from democracy.

On Wednesday in Abuja, Bello made this statement while inspecting a bridge building project being built in the Wuye district of the FCT.

In a statement provided to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja by the Assistant Director of Information for the Office of the Honourable Minister, Hajiya Rabi Musa Umar, it was said that:
“This is one project that we are making sure to see that it is funded properly because as you know, the whole idea and also one of the cardinal objectives of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is to complete major infrastructure projects. By the time this bridge is done, Wuse District and Wuye District would be connected and traffic flow is going to be much enhanced.

“More importantly, already you can see that Wuye District has become very vibrant. Construction activities are on-going and construction sites within the district are also vibrant now and that is why, like Mr. President would always say, infrastructure is key and that is what this administration will continue to provide. That’s the only way we can accommodate the teeming population of the city”.

Bello therefore urged residents to continue to support the Administration and the construction companies to enable them deliver on the dividends of democracy.

He expressed satisfaction with Messrs. Arab Contractors Nigeria Limited, the construction company handling the project for the FCDA, for the work done so far on the project, adding that with the pace of work, the project could be completed by the end of 2022.

Speaking on the scope of work of the project, the Director, Engineering Services, FCDA , Engr. Obiora Ezeoha said, the work involved arterial roads, connectors, important local streets, minor access roads and two river bridges.

“We equally have pedestrian and interchange locations as part of the scope that was added in 2014. Generally, the project is 85 percent completed while the interchange location is 45 percent completed and we believe that by the end of this year, Arab Contractors will be able to finish the projects.”, he added.

The project was initially awarded in August 2009 and reviewed in 2014 to include the interchange at Ring Road One/Olusegun Obasanjo way.
