Trademore Flood Kills Top DSS Officer, Three Others, Sweep 26 Vehicles, Affect 166 Houses

0

A flash flood killed a top intelligence official on Sunday night in Trademore estate, off the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Expressway, also known as Airport Road.

Our correspondent reported, 166 people were displaced by the flood, and 26 cars swept away.

The intelligence official allegedly went out to purchase medications from a drugstore while it was raining. Nearby residents tried in vain to prevent the DSS operator from going across the flooded region.

“Lives lost,” one resident told our correspondent Homes ruined. Ruined firms. Cars uprooted, families homeless. The flood reportedly washed a Rover over the bridge by the Police Station, killing the driver.

“A young lady who served out her NYSC in an office years ago is looking for the car she parked outside last night. Probably her biggest investment from savings and loans.

“The owner of a Supermaket in the estate had his home and cars destroyed, his family has moved into the supermarket for shelter.

“All the goods in Prognosis Pharmacy and Supermarket is out on the street this morning damaged by the flood. That has been the reality in Trademore Estate for some years now.

“Last (Sunday) night’s flood is arguably the worst since the over 10 years history of flood in the estate.

“Last year, the video of a man swept away by the flood went viral. Minister of state for the FCT visited, shared mattresses, cooking gas and cartons of noodles to families affected. No lasting solution was sought.

“This year, as more estates crop up in and around Trademore Estate, a more devastating disaster has occurred.

“Blames are flying around on why the flood was more devastating than ever. They say government opened the dams last night and so the resultant flood.

“Some say it is the wall recently built on Imo Street as part of security measures to prevent the infiltration of herders that caused the flood. Another said the developer had recently sand filled areas that should be waterways and attempted to build on them, thus the resultant flood.

“My observation is that the key problem is the houses built on the water ways by the estate developer. The houses had been marked for demolition in the past, but there was no enforcement possibly because there was no compensation for affected families.

“NEMA van and staff were seen this morning (Monday) at 10am directing traffic and moving round affected homes. FCDA Development Control will soon follow. Will a lasting solution be proffered? Will the necessary political will be mustered to follow through? We can’t be silent on this.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reacted to the incident.

Director General, FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA
, Abbas G. Idriss in a statement said; “Following long hours of heavy rainfall on Sunday 12th September 2021, Trademoore, Light Gold, Wisdom Estates and Lugbe community of the Federal Capital Territory were heavily flooded- resulting to loss of lives and much property affected in and around the Estates.

“FEMA has established, in the course of rescue operations which began from 9: 00 pm of 12th September 2021 up to 13th September 2021 that four (4) persons lost their lives to the flood and the recovered bodies have been taken by family members for burial.

“Also, over twenty six (26) vehicles- including an articulated towing van were swept away by the flood, besides a tarred road in Trademoore Estate that was completely washed away as a result of the strength of the flood water. These losses are a summary of the impact of the flood on the affected locations. In total, 166 houses were affected.

“The Agency is still estimating the volume of losses suffered as a result of this flood.

“In light of this unfortunate incident, I wish to convey the deepest sympathies of the Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory- Mallam Muhammed Musa Bello, to the residents of Trademoore Estate, Light Gold Estate, Wisdom Estate, Lugbe Community, affected individuals and families- including those of surrounding communities, over the loss of lives and property.

“Furthermore, I want to appeal to the members of the Community living along those axes to report any missing person or persons between the period of the flood till today September 13, 2021 to the FCT Emergency Management Agency.

“For this purpose, some communities in Gwagwalada- including Giri, Unguwar Dodo and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps Gwagwalada Command have been put on alert to report any case of floating body or property on the river channel for prompt rescue.

“Also, I want to appeal to all residents of the Federal Capital Territory Especially Developers to desist from violating the approved building codes in the Federal Capital Territory. We are also appealing to them to stop erecting retention walls to protect storm water from flowing. By doing so they are causing more havoc to the community.

“We also call on all residents to always call the 112 toll-free Emergency number to get prompt response when there is any form of threat or danger, as the Search and Rescue team of the Agency alongside other emergency stakeholders are on 24/7 alert.

“Lastly, as we enter the final phase of the rainy season in the Federal Capital Territory- a phase in which rainfall is always at its peak, I once again call on all residents to avoid dumping of refuse in drainages; clear all surrounding drainages and other blockages that obstruct the free flow of water to reduce flood risk and its negative consequences; avoid driving or walking through flood water; relocate to higher ground before being threatened by flood water for those who are living along the river banks; watch for sign posts on flood locations and also take seriously FEMA’s early warning sensitization from the media and town criers”.

WHO To Support Nigeria Goals Of Achieving Self-sufficiency In Local Production Of Pharmaceuticals

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo said the UN agency remains committed to continue to support the Government of Nigeria in its goal of achieving self-sufficiency in the local production of pharmaceuticals (including Vaccines), traditional medicine and researches.

He made this known at a press conference to commemorate African Traditional Medicine Day on Monday in Abuja.

Mulombo who was represented at the occasion by Dr. Kofi Boateng, EPI Focal Point , Universal Health Coverage(UHC) added that, the listing of 14 herbal medicinal products by NAFDAC against COVID-19 and ongoing clinical trials on them, is in line with the Regional Expert Committee on COVID-19 aim of elevating the standards of clinical trials of traditional medicine for COVID-19.

He further stated that, the ongoing research(s) in the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research & Development and other higher institutions, highlights the interest of the Government of Nigeria to develop and promote African Traditional Medicines

According to him; “The above are in line with the theme of this year commemoration; The potential contribution of Traditional Medicine to COVID-19 Response

“Africa has a long history of traditional medicine and practitioners that play an important role in providing care to populations over the centuries. The African Heads of State in 2001, declared traditional medicine research a priority and subsequently designated the next 10 years as decade of African Traditional Medicine which was extended to the year 2020.

“For the past 20 years, countries in the WHO African Regional Office have marked the African Traditional Medicine Day on 31st of August each year. WHO advocate for strengthening the linkage between traditional medicine and institutionalized care in line with the WHO strategy.

“We are still battling the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO recognizes that traditional, complementary and alternative medicine has many benefits when properly harnessed with. Therefore, researches into our traditional medicines is an effort in the right direction

“WHO Nigeria has taking it up to support the ministry and in particular the department of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, Complimentary in the review of the Traditional Medicines Policy 2007, review of the Nigeria Pharmacopoeia 2008 and the development of a 5-year strategic plan to implement the new policy and the revised pharmacopoeia”, he said .

He said, WHO will continue to provide technical assistance to the TCAM department, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NPRD) and NAFDAC in improving the quality of medicinal products and ensure the listing of these products in the National Essential Medicines List.

Also, the Minister of State for Health, Sen. Olorunnibe Mamora on Monday said that the Federal government is currently working towards the review of the Nigeria Herbal Pharmacopoeia and the Traditional Medicine Policy.

He added that, the efforts of government in this regard have greatly minimized the negative consequences of the disease on the health and economy of Nigerians.

All these measures are aimed at strengthening our resources for delivery of quality, efficacious and safe traditional medicine products.

He said; “We also have in place an expert committee for the setting up of Traditional, Complementary & Alternative Medicine Institute to serve for the training of professionals in this sector.

“The series of events in the world during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic calls for the need to look inwards and consider local production of medicines as necessary for national security and attainment of Universal Health Coverage.

“The Federal Ministry of Health on its efforts for local content tasked the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research & Development (NIPRD) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) to scale up their activities towards the search for a local solution to the pandemic.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is working in collaboration with international organizations and relevant MDA’s to ensure the discovery of effective remedies against COVID-19 and other diseases from the rich and extensive flora of the country”, he said.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Alh Mahmud Mamma said that Nigeria is blessed with about 8,000 medicinal plants yet to be utilized in the area of research, development and value addition.

He added that, it is estimated that about 80% of the population that live in the rural communities utilize traditional medicine.

He said that, traditional medicine practice preceded the use of conventional medicine in all parts of the world, Nigeria inclusive.

He added, “There is therefore the need to look in wards to research and develop our medicinal plants for the benefit of all. The Federal Ministry of Health has intervened in several ways in order to develop, promote and institutionalize Traditional Medicine.

“We are also working on the establishment of a wellbeing Centre in the Ministry to serve the public.

The economic benefit of traditional medicine is the provision of jobs to our unemployed youths in the area of conservation, cultivation and harvesting of medicinal plants. This will help reduce youth restiveness.

The activities for this event include exhibition and symposium”, he added.

COVID-19 Is Here To Stay, We Must Adapt, Ehanire

0

Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, stated that we will have to live with Covid-19 in the long run and must devise a strategy to do so.

More so, the plan would vary each country, depending on their position, strengths and shortcomings.

He added that the quest for and path to such sustainability will need to be continually reassessed to accord with current circumstances.

On COVID-19, Ehanire said there can be no “one-size-fits-all” and countries must seek the best of both safety and socio-economic normality.

He added, “The dreaded 3rd wave of Covid-19 may appear to be leveling out, because there been no catastrophic increases in infections and fatalities. But it is not wise to assume that the threat is gone, especially as cases are fluctuating and have to be identified by genomic sequencing. Evidence so far, however, is that the Delta strain is already the dominant in Nigeria. We must keep our protective measures in place and increase testing to determine our situation.

“There are reports of new coronavirus mutations circulating in other countries, a development we shall monitor with all tools available to us, to ensure we respond appropriately. We also remain on alert at Points of Entry, including land and sea borders, to confront importation of Covid-19. Several cases have been indeed been identified by Rapid Diagnostic test and taken care of accordingly.

“Regarding vaccines, all States have received doses of AstraZeneca, Moderna and J&J vaccines for the ongoing 2nd phase of the vaccination exercise in all States. The Federal Government has done due diligence to ensure vaccine quality and safety. Available data shows that there have been no serious adverse effects so far, following vaccination so that confidence in vaccines we are using is upheld. We have a good mix and quantity of vaccines, and do not envisage shortages, despite news reports that vaccines allocated to Africa will be reduced by 25% soon. We believe the reduction may be linked with increased demand in high income countries many of whom have commenced 3rd booster doses of Covid-19 and or reduced vaccine eligibility age in their countries to 12 years or even less. This tells us that the vaccine is effective, and that we should also accept it. The government has secured nearly 40 million doses of J&J vaccines to be arriving at a rate that NPHCDA will set, to align with
their utilization strategy. We shall also surely receive donor doses, so that we do not expect to be impacted by the expected shortfall.

“As of today, we have recorded a total of 199,151 confirmed cases of Covid 19, 365 in the past 24hours, from 2,941,438 samples tested so far. We have also sadly altogether lost 2,598 persons, 8 in the past 24hrs, and a case fatality rate of 1.3%, a slight increase over the 1.2% of a few weeks ago. NCDC will give further details on this.

He, however urged all citizens to avail themselves of the opportunity of the second phase of vaccine deployment, to be vaccinated. I also call on those who received their first dose to go for the second dose, when due, to optimize protection from infection.

Meanwhile , the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, said in order to end this pandemic, we must achieve enough level of population immunity, that the virus essentially becomes a nuisance and no longer a threat.

Saying, the only way to achieve this is if eligible persons come out for vaccination and observe the non-pharmaceutical interventions. The COVID-19 vaccines remain the most effective tool against this virus.

According to him; “With the increasing number of cases of COVID-19 globally, we are beginning to see countries instituting vaccine mandates. Some countries have begun asking workers to either present a proof of vaccination or provide weekly COVID-19 PCR negative results in order to be allowed into public offices.

“A recent study by the United States Centre for Disease Control (USCDC) which examined 600,000 COVID-19 cases, revealed that people who were unvaccinated were about four and a half times more likely to contract COVID-19. It further showed that those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 were eleven times more likely to die of the disease and ten times more likely to be hospitalized with the disease. We should also be mindful of the long-term effects of COVID-19 infection, which is characterized by blood clotting disorders, lung and kidney problems”.

The minister vaccinated two new born babies as the principal vaccinator at the Area 2 Primary Healthcare Centre, Garki Abuja, urging mothers to take the immunization seriously and maintain appropriate hygiene.

In his remarks, the Ag. Secretary of FCT Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Iwot Ndaeyo, said the first round was conducted in the 5 area councils of Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Kuje and Kwali last month, August, 2021 and all are due for the second round in the month of September, 2021.

He stated that the first-round report showed Abaji, Kwali and Bwari performing well and passing the end process evaluation at first test, while Abuja Municipal and Kuje Area Councils had to undertake mop-up exercises to meet the required coverage and eventually passed the end process test.

“The past year has been quite challenging for us in the FCT and indeed the country, due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic which tasked us in many unprecedented ways.

“Containing the pandemic in the FCT involved the active participation of virtually all arms of the government alongside several government and non-government organizations.

“It must however be mentioned that the role of the judiciary especially with the use of the mobile court system ensured the enforcement of pandemic rules and guaranteed that we were not overwhelmed”.

He, however, congratulated , the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Monica Bolna’an Dongban-Mensem for the first Court of Appeal Legal Year.

Our Driver Zoomed Off, Made It Easier For Kidnappers To Abduct Us, Says Abuja-bound Travellers

0

The kidnapped victims of the Lagos-bound 18-seater passenger bus, recovered by Ondo Amotekun, have recounted their ordeals at the hands of their kidnappers, blaming their abductors’ actions on their driver’s actions.

The three people on board were
the remaining nine passengers were rescued by the Amotekun Corps on Friday after being kidnapped and brought into the jungle.

The three victims, Benjamin Ojoga, Omolara Fajana, and Faith Sunday, who were reunited with their families at the Amotekun headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, on Saturday, said the bus driver abandoned them and raced away after the kidnappers began shooting into the air.

Benjamin Ojoga, one of the rescued victims, said the gunmen struck when the passengers alighted from the bus to allow it to move freely on a bad stretch of road in Ifira-Akoko, claiming that the driver’s decision made it easy for the kidnappers to abduct them because they were unfamiliar with the terrain.

He said, “It was after the gunshots that the driver of the bus zoomed off which gave the kidnappers the opportunity to abduct us. I got injured from the beating the kidnappers gave me. They were saying that I’m a ‘force man’ and I told them I’m not. But they didn’t believe me.

Narrating her experience at the kidnappers’ den another victim, Omolara Fajana, stated that the driver asked them to alight from the bus to enable it move smoothly on a bad portion of the road.

She said, “On that day, we were coming from Abuja and heading for Lagos. Shortly after leaving Ibilo, our bus got stuck on a bad portion. After spending about three to four hours getting the bus out, we continued the journey.

“On getting to Ifira-Akoko, we saw another bad portion and the driver told us to alight so that the bus would be lighter and to enable it to move easily. Immediately we alighted from the bus, we heard gunshots and everybody became jittery. At that moment, the bus zoomed off and the gunmen were able to abduct four of us. One of us, an old woman limping, was allowed to go but they collected her phone.

“The incident happened around 6:30 pm. Then, they made us walk for about three hours inside the bush. The kidnappers spoke pidgin English and they appeared to be herdsmen.“

Speaking about the rescue operation, the Amotekun Commander in the state, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said the corps had been making efforts to apprehend the suspects

Adeleye stated, “After we secured the release of the first nine, my men continued to comb the forest which is massive. It is the same forest that extends to some parts of Kogi State. We started tracking them and once they started maintaining contact with the victim’s families, we also commenced tracking up to the point we gave them a hot chase and we were able to secure the victims’ release. “

The commander, however, noted that no arrest had been made, stating that it was working on the case alongside the police and the Department of State Services.

“It is a synergy of all security agencies, we are just taking the lead,” the Amotekun boss noted.

NECO: Examination malpractice rampant in North

0

… Names Bauchi, Borno, Kano As Hotbeds

Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), has revealed that examination misconduct is widespread in Nigeria’s northern states.

In the last five years, he claims, examination malpractices have been common in Bauchi, Borno, Kano, and Kebbi states.

The Registrar made this admission during a presentation titled “Consequences of Examination Malpractice: Closing the Gaps and Incentives for National Growth” at the Association of Model Islamic Schools’ Biennial National Conference and AGM in 2021.

The Registrar discovered that most of the states with high levels of examination misconduct were in the north after conducting an analysis.

“In 2016, Bauchi (8.17%), Kaduna (6.20%), Kano (5.51%), Plateau (5.31%), and Sokoto State (8.87%) experienced high level of examination malpractice.

“In 2017, Bauchi (10.79%), Kebbi (16.06%), Borno (7.87%) and Kano (7.29%) states featured prominently in high level of examination malpractice.

“In 2018, Kano (12.45%), Kebbi (10.71%), Gombe (5.40%) and Zamfara (5.14%) states were more involved in examination malpractices.

“In 2019, Bornu (13.08%), Kano (11.70%), Kebbi (8.67%), Taraba (5.04%) and Yobe (6.56%) states had high level of examination malpractice.

“Similarly, in 2020, Adamawa (18.51%), Bauchi (7.88%), Kaduna (6.87%), Kano (7.88%) and Katsina (18.01%) states had high level of examination malpractice.

“In the five years under study, Bauchi, Borno, Kano and Kebbi States featured prominently in the high level of examination malpractice”, he said.

Wushishi further said that aiding and abetting, copying foreign materials, collusion and double scripts were more in occurrence over the last five years, adding that leakage of questions has had zero level over the past five years.

He stated that examination malpractice has caused the lowering of educational standards in the educational system in Nigeria, adding that it has the potential of making the nation’s educational institutions to produce quacks and inferior manpower as graduates.

Wushishi recommended that government needs to relax over-emphasising certification and paper qualification for everything in the country, stressing that appropriate sanctions should be meted on the culprits of malpractices who are caught.
