Cholera: FCT Water Board assuages residents’ fears , Says Water Free Of Impurities

0

The Federal Capital Territory Water Board has allayed locals’ concerns about sewer pipes leaching into waterways, perhaps causing a cholera outbreak.

While promising locals that the water has never been tainted and will never be affected.

Dame Joy Okoro, the Acting General Manager of the FCT Water Board, offered this guarantee to journalists during a press conference the Board held for its Wuye, Wuse, and Maitama customers over the weekend in Wuse, Abuja.

She, on the other hand, disputed media claims of water poisoning at the Lower Usuma Dam as “false,” saying, “Our water is very very safe. All the newspaper publications about unsafe water in the FCT that came out about two weeks ago, I think it’s a fallacy. We have the best treatment plant in Nigeria and it takes care of treating the water before we supply for consumption the global best practices.

“The treatment we put in takes care of everything. That is the essence of water treatment -to take care of any possible impurity and make the resource safe for consumption. That is what the Board has been doing and it will continue to do it because the FCTA attaches so much value to lives of Nigerians and all residents.

“So we are assuring all of them that our water is very pure, very good for drinking and very potable. And it is not just one but four treatment plants, at the Lower Usuma Dam, and the FCT Administration, through the Hon. Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, continues to give us enabling environment.

“We have all the chemicals for water treatment and we do carry out water treatment judiciously, so as to serve our customers best quality water. Our staff work 24/7, especially those in the production area to make sure that all the residents are well served potable Water.”

While speaking on the issue of cholera that broke out in the nation’s capital, she said; “There is no cause for alarm. And I wish to make it abundantly clear and assure residents that the outbreak of cholera has nothing to do with FCT Water Board. We have world class quality control systems that ensure top water quality from the point of production to the point of delivery to final consumers.

“The water bodies our Health Secretariat referred to have to do with streams, shalow wells and others water bodies, but certainly not our Board’s water which is scientifically treated and controlled in line with global best practices. Our water is perfect and clean, anywhere. This has been verified by global organizations and give a very clean bill of health. We have our standard laboratories manned by scientists who work 24/7 to ensure residents get the best. We are sure of what goes into water purification.”

Okoro also revealed that since assumption as Acting General Manager, the Board has upped its revenue generation by fifty percent, adding that from less than N200 million, the Board has doubled its generation, which has been made possible due to priority the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello has placed on water resource.

“We have greatly improved the Internally Generated Revenue, of the Board, by putting in certain things in place. Though we have challenges too, and funds is part of it. But the Minister makes water provision a priority so has always given us the enabling encironment which is why we have been able to increase our revenue generation.
“And we are getting there, because we have been tasked to generate revenue based on the fact that some much is been put into water supply in the FCT. So our IGR has increased and it is increasing day by day.”

Responding to a question on why there were so many complaints about dysfunctional meters, Okoro said: “Like we have told our customers, once they observe that their meters are faulty or not working, let them inform us, because these things are mechanical and could possibly trip off anything, so they should simply call us and we will either fix or change the meters.

“And sadly, we advise our customers to guard their meters very jealously. We have instances where customers just don’t care about the meters, they say it’s government affairs, it is not. The meters were installed free in the first instance and it is for the customers to own and protect them.
“I had an experience before I came to water Board, where a friend I visited parked her car on the the meter, I had to call her attention to repark the car.”

Speaking on online payment, she explained: “We are making serious efforts to make sure online payments as as smooth as possible. That is because government has given us marching orders to lay through remitta, which is very safe and easy.

“The only problem we are having presently is because it’s a new thing -we are migrating sometimes customers complain about poor network hindering them from making payments, among others, actually it’s affecting our IGR drive too because some customers give up payments after several unsuccessful attempts to pay, we are working with systemspeck to ensure customers find it much easier to make payments.

FCTA Demolishes Over 349 Illegal Structures In Lugbe

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished over 349 illegal constructions in Lugbe-across, Abuja, near the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The exercise , called the “2021 mother of clean ups,” was directed by Comrade Ikharo Attah, head of the FCT Ministerial Committee on City Sanitation, and was accompanied by security and Fire Service officers.

He stated that the operation was part of a routine effort on the Airport road corridor, which was important to keep Abuja, the country’s capital, clean.

Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, visited the region recently with the commissioner of police and other strategic army officers, as well as other security heads in the territory, and they were displeased with the level of infringement, according to Attah.

Usman Nga-Kupi, the Chief of Garki, who was also in the entourage, criticized the fact that most of the places along the fence line where residents should park their cars had been converted into businesses, according to him.

He went on to say that the FCT Administration had gated the organic village for residents awaiting resettlement, but that the scheme had been thwarted by those within the area, which violates the Abuja Master Plan.

According to him ; “The people have turn the fence line to motor park, where car owners park and pay N1,000 on a daily basis.

“In line with town planning rules and to keep the city clean and safe, we are not going to be detered, this comprehensive clean up show that FCT Administration is committed to keeping the city clean.

“One of the key issues is to keep to the acceptable standards, if you are driving in through the Airport Road what you see is not befitting, Abuja Environmental Protection Board is doing well by evacuating the heavy waste, there are dumpsites at the back of the Villages but some still come to the front to dump waste”.

Attah also explained that the exercise was to ensure that Abuja especially along the Airport Road is maintained in line with the best practices of orderliness and sanitation.

The demolition exercise which started at Lugbe-Across, Lugbe Berger, Car wash and Lugbe zone 5 lasted for seven hours.

Nigeria’s Population Expansion Blamed For Insecurity, Says Health Experts

0

According to health experts, Nigeria’s insecurity problem is due to the country’s population growth.

Lack of family planning, particularly in rural areas, is to blame for the high rate of fertility, since people create more than they can cope with.

They stated this at a one-day workshop for media held in Abuja over the weekend by the Association for the Advancement of Family Planning in partnership with the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Association of the Advancement of the Family Planning (AAFP), Dr. Ejike Oji said, “Nigeria right now has fertility rate of 5.3 while the world is 5.2. That means Nigeria only reduce by 2 since the world came together. There are three key things you notice in a country that is in trouble with it’s fertility rate, right now our dependency ratio is about 85.5% that means the people who are producing what other people are using is less than 20%, which is a red flag.

“70% of Nigeria population are dependent what it means is that the young people who are suppose to work are without job, hungry and want sex.

“There is no part of this country that have not seen killings because politicians, individuals are recruiting these jobless youths to cause problems.

“It is imperative that by 2025 the country must reduce its fertility rate”.

He also lamented that, “Couple with the fact that Nigeria has one of the highest number of out of school children in the world. That means you have huge number of young Nigerians that are hungry. Some professionals are now moving out of the country, Our young people are leaving in hundreds. That is brain drain”.

He further stated that they raised alarm on Nigeria’s population explosion, saying, ” 10 years ago we were shouting it that, if Nigeria doesn’t do something about the population explosion, there will be crisis situation and it is happening now. Our population has grown so tremendously in the last few years, 2006, we said we were 120 million, then we projected 2.5% population growth , that means Nigeria population is about 220 million.

“A lot of people refer to China and India but their economy is doing so well. If we look at the history of China and India, they used to be one of the poorest Nations until they did something. Nigeria fertility rate is the problem.
If you look at countries that are developed, they are countries that have done something about their fertility rate”.

Collaborating Oji’s point, Dr. Okai Haruna stated that, “It is lack of family planning that is leading us to all these insecurity crisis. People are having children they cannot take care of. We are not saying people should not have kids but have the number of you can care for.

“It is imperative for the government to take the issue of family planning very seriously because it impacts on all sphere of life”.

More so, the Executive Director  of International Society of Media in Public Health, Chief Moji Makanjuola urged media practitioners to speak to issues on reproductive health.

Saying, they need to preach the economic, sociology and the psychology of it.

…Says She Started Smoking When She Gained Admission To UNILAG

With the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Super TV’s Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, still proceeding, the key suspect, Chidinma Ojukwu, told newsmen in an interview that she does not want to die over the matter.

“I regret killing Mr Ataga,” the University of Lagos undergraduate stated amid cries. I’m not sure what my plans are for the future, but I don’t want to die. Please, I don’t want to die as a result of this situation. I’ve never killed somebody before.

“I was merely trying to keep my composure while answering questions during the procession, not that I’m not sorry.” Everything I did was completely regrettable, and I apologize. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ataga’s family for what I did.
If I had my life back, I wouldn’t do anything like that. I am deeply sorry and I hope you forgive me.”

Chidinma and Ataga were reportedly lodged in a service apartment in Lagos State’s Lekki district, where the latter’s body was discovered the next day in the room and the former escaped, sparking suspicions of her involvement in his killing.

According to the police, they pursued her and found her at her father’s home in Alagomeji, Yaba.

Chidinma said that she was under the influence of strong narcotics and alcohol when she was arrested.

Chidinma’s parents divorced when she was two years old, and she moved in with her uncle, Chijioke Obi, in Lagos’ Mushin neighborhood.

She went on to say that one of her early dreams was to be a musician or an actor.

The suspect stated, “My role models were Tiwa Savage, Beyonce, Rihanna, Genevieve, and Regina Hall. I schooled in Johnson Primary School and also a government primary school in Mushin. I later went to Sidman College in Sabo, Yaba. I was two-year-old when my parents separated, I was little, so while I was growing up, I stayed with my uncle, Mr Chijioke Obi, in Mushin. I don’t know if he bears Izu, but it was my uncle that trained me.”

Upon completion of secondary school education, the suspect said she gained admission to study Mass Communication at the University of Lagos.

Asked about her assumed drug-induced lifestyle, Chidinma said, “I started smoking after I got into UNILAG.”

She also confirmed she’s the person in a trending video showing a lady puffing out cigarette smoke while soft music plays in the background.

She stated, “I am the one smoking in the trending video. I started smoking a few years ago. Old-time friends introduced me to it and we don’t talk anymore. Everything started after I entered UNILAG, but not actually when I am in school, it could be other places. But I am not the one in the other video (dissociating herself from another trending video showing a lady exhibiting her butt).”

On her relationship with Ataga, Chidinma described him as just a friend she met a few months back, faulting claims that he neither took hard drugs nor alcohol.

Narrating some of the moments she spent with the deceased, she said, “Mr Ataga was a friend and I don’t know how to elaborate more. He has not shown me pictures of his family but he sometimes acts like he was married and not that he is married (sic). I have met him up to four or five times; he takes drugs and drinks alcohol. It is not that I am trying to put anything together.’’

Speaking while being paraded by the police, Chidinma said she met the late Ataga about four months ago. Chidinma also said that she and Ataga were “having fun” when an argument broke out and she stabbed him twice after which she withdrew N380, 000 from his account using his ATM card.

The police had also disclosed that an Information and Communication Technology unit recently created by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, tracked the suspect, who used different SIM cards– both Nigerian and foreign ones.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who killed African-American George Floyd, Sentence To 22 Years In Jail

0

Floyd was detained by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, 2020, after a convenience store clerk contacted 911 to report Floyd purchasing smokes with a counterfeit $20 cash.

Floyd died as a result of the harshness with which the officers who detained him treated him.

The death of the 46-year-old black man caused a worldwide outcry, with demonstrators defying COVID-19 regulations and marching across the United States.

The demonstrations expanded to other regions of the globe as well.

In his ruling, Justice Peter Cahill of a Minnesota court, held that “the sentence is not based on emotion or sympathy, but I want to acknowledge the pain both families are feeling, especially George Floyd’s.”

“My comments are actually going to be very brief, because most of it is going to be in writing,” he held.

“This is a legal analysis that is not based on emotion or sympathy. However, I acknowledge the pain felt in this courtroom and outside the courtroom.”

Prosecutors had asked for a 30-year prison sentence but the judge handed a 22-year sentence to Chauvin.

Chauvin, 45, was convicted in April 21, on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

0

..As Police Release Suspect’s Father, Lekki Apartment Operator On Bail

The University of Lagos, according to our source, the were considering suspending Chidinma in order to protect the school’s name, reputation, and certificate.

On Friday, a source in the university’s Senate stated the student’s actions were in violation of the institution’s Students Handbook.

On the condition of anonymity, a university professor said: Chidinma Ojukwu, the main suspect in the gruesome murder of Super TV CEO Michael Usifo Ataga may be suspended from the University of Lagos any moment from now.

Our correspondent  gathered that authorities of the institution were considering Chidinma’s suspension in order to protect the school’s name, reputation and certificate .

A source in the university’s Senate, on Friday, said that the student’s action was contrary to the provisions of the institution’s Students Handbook. A professor at the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, our correspondent that “there is no two ways, she will be suspended.”

He added that the suspect would be suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

A dean in one of the faculties in the university also noted that the student would not be able to escape suspension based on the alleged behaviour.

According to him , “We don’t just suspend like that. A committee will examine the situation, including the video where she confessed before taking a decision. But I do not think she can escape suspension.’’

Meanwhile, following the arrest and confession of Chidinma Ojukwu for allegedly stabbing Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga, to death at a service apartment in the Lekki area of Lagos State, the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said that the suspect’s father and one Nkechi Mogbo, have been released on bail.

We learnt that Chidinma’s father was arrested for hindering her daughter’s arrest at their residence in the Alagomeji area of the state.

Until Chindinma’s arrest, Mogbo had been in police custody after investigation showed that she operated the service apartment where the University of Lagos undergraduate allegedly killed Ataga.

The suspect, while being paraded at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Thursday, confessed to have committed the crime.

Speaking on Friday, Odumosu said though investigation was ongoing, an order had been given for Mogbo’s release on bail, adding that Chidinma’s father had also been released.

He stated that Chidinma’s account of how she perpetrated the crime exonerated her father and Mogbo.

Odumosu said, “Chidinma’s statement exonerated her father as she said that he was not aware of the incident. We released him on Thursday. Also, the lady in our custody, one Mrs Nkechi Mogbo, who leased the flat from the property owner and used it for a service apartment, has been released on bail.

After Magbo was arrested, she assisted the police because of the information she gave us. Now that we got the principal suspect, and the fact that the principal suspect confessed that she singularly committed the act, and equally went further to explain that she never met Nkechi Mogbo, but that she only phoned her and that they transacted all the business online, the culpability in the case of murder is still exonerating her. In view of this, I have ordered her release on bail while we continue our investigation. However, if any other thing during the investigation points to her, bail is not the end of the case and we will bring her back.”

NASS Leaking Roof Caused By Blockages Of Drainages, FCDA

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCDA) said on Friday that the leaks in the National Assembly Complex were caused by drainage blockages that allowed water to seep through expansion joints in the roof slab.

Full waterproofing of the White House building’s roof is a crucial part of the projected refurbishment of the National Assembly Complex, he adds.

The FCDA Head, Public Relations & Information Unit, Richard A. Nduul, made this remark accessible to newsmen in Abuja.

According to the statement ;
“The attention of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has been drawn to the recent flooding of the lobby of the National Assembly Complex, Abuja resulting from leakages from the roof.  Our findings indicate that the leakages are traceable to blockages of drainages leading to seepage of water through expansion joints in the roof slab.

“Full waterproofing of the roof of the White House building is a major aspect of the proposed renovation of the National Assembly Complex.

“Management of the National Assembly approached the FCDA in 2019 for a total rehabilitation and upgrading of the NASS Complex to bring it in tune with Parliamentary Buildings around the world.

“This contract is currently undergoing procurement process in line with the Procurement Act of 2007 and will therefore be awarded as soon as it is concluded in conformity with the requirements of the Act and also considering all other relevant parameters.

“The Authority (FCDA) therefore assures that when the time comes, this project will be executed meticulously in order to ensure that the Nation gets value for the funds that will be expended as this has been the tradition with every other assignment which the Authority has undertaken.”

It would be recalled that Nigeria Senate on Wednesday blamed the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCDA) for not renovating the National Assembly Complex since it was built and led to a National embarrassment.

Africa Is Facing Its Most Difficult Challenges COVID-19 Surge Yet

0

Africa is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave, which is spreading quicker and is likely to surpass the peak of the second wave, which reached the continent in early 2021.

Since the third wave began on May 3, 2021, 19 cases have increased for five weeks in a row. Africa had registered roughly 474 000 new cases as of 20 June, day 48 of the new wave, a 21 percent rise over the first 48 days of the second wave.
By early July, given the current pace of infection, the current spike will have surpassed the preceding one.

In 12 African countries, the epidemic has resurfaced. The latest spike is being fueled by a number of factors, including a lack of compliance with public health measures, increasing social engagement and migration, and the spread of variations.

The Delta variation has been discovered in most samples sequenced in the past month in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, both of which are suffering COVID-19 recurrence.

The variation, which was first discovered in India, has been reported in 14 African nations.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti stated that the third wave is picking up speed, spreading faster, hitting harder. With rapidly rising case numbers and increasing reports of serious illness, the latest surge threatens to be Africa’s worst yet,” . “Africa can still blunt the impact of these fast-rising infections, but the window of opportunity is closing. Everyone everywhere can do their bit by taking precautions to prevent transmission.”

While adding that, WHO is deploying more experts to some of the worst-affected countries, including Uganda and Zambia as well as supporting South Africa-based regional laboratories to monitor variants of concern. WHO is also boosting innovative technological support to other laboratories in the region without sequencing capacities to better monitor the evolution of the virus. In the next six months, WHO is aiming for an eight- to ten-fold increase in the samples sequenced each month in Southern African countries.

Moeti added; “The COVID-19 upsurge comes as the vaccine supply crunch persists. Eighteen African countries have used over 80% of their COVAX vaccine supplies, with eight having exhausted their stocks. Twenty-nine countries have administered over 50% of their supplies. Despite the progress, just over 1% of Africa’s population has been fully vaccinated. Globally, around 2.7 billion doses administered, of which just under 1.5% have been administered in the continent.

“As many high-income countries vaccinate a significant proportion of their populations, proof of vaccination is leading to fewer movement restrictions. Globally,16 countries are waiving quarantine for those with a vaccination certificate. Measures to prevent COVID-19 transmission are crucial, but with many African countries having limited access to vaccines, it is important that vaccines be only one of the conditions countries use to open borders and increase freedom of movement.

“With high vaccination rates it’s shaping up into a summer of freedom, family and fun for millions of people in richer countries. This is understandable and we all long for the same joys”. “Vaccine shortages are already prolonging the pain of COVID-19 in Africa. Let’s not add injury to injustice. Africans must not face more restrictions because they are unable to access vaccines that are only available elsewhere. I urge all regional and national regulatory agencies to recognize all the vaccines Emergency Use listed by WHO.”

In the European Union, a COVID-19 passport system for vaccination, testing and recovery will take effect from 1 July. However, only four of the eight vaccines listed by WHO for emergency use are recognized by the European Medicines Agency for the passport system.

WHO and the European Medicines Agency use the same standards in assessing vaccines. Manufacturers may choose not to apply to the European Medicines Agency if they do not intend to market their products in countries in the European Union or European Economic Area. But the safety and efficacy of all WHO emergency use listed vaccines has been proven globally in preventing severe COVID-19 illness and death.

In Africa, a WHO survey of 45 countries show that their borders are open for air travel and only Mauritius will require proof of vaccination for international travellers from 15 July 2021. Most countries do not give quarantine exemptions for travellers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and require a negative COVID-19 test.

Moeti spoke during a virtual press conference today facilitated by APO Group. She was joined by Mr Kamil Alawadi, Regional Vice President for Africa and Middle East, International Air Transport Association (IATA). Also on hand to answer questions were Dr Richard Mihigo, Coordinator, Immunization and Vaccines Development Programme, WHO Regional Office for Africa, Dr Thierno Balde, Team Leader, Operational Partnerships, WHO Regional Office for Africa, and Dr Nicksy Gumede-Moeletsi, Regional Virologist, WHO Regional Office for Africa.
