Wike Dismisses Allegations of Plot Against Lawmaker, Calls for Focus on FCT Development

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, is fully focused on his mandate to transform Abuja and will not be distracted by political theatrics, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, has stated.

Olayinka made this known in response to claims by the Action Peoples Party (APP) and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) alleging a plot to arrest House of Representatives member from Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu.

Describing the allegations as baseless, Olayinka dismissed Ugochinyere as someone on a “retainership” with those willing to fund his political antics. “If Ugochinyere has collected Alawee from anyone and failed to deliver, he should resolve his issues with that person,” Olayinka said.

The minister’s spokesperson further criticized CUPP, calling it an “obsolete and irrelevant” entity whose purpose ended after the 2019 presidential election. He accused Ugochinyere of exploiting the defunct platform for personal and financial gain.

“Ugochinyere is impersonating as the spokesperson of a non-existent group of opposition lawmakers while using APP as a tool for political and financial negotiations,” Olayinka added.

Regarding CUPP and APP’s allegations of judicial corruption, forgery, and treason, Olayinka urged Ugochinyere to reflect on his political dealings and mend fences with any disgruntled benefactors.

He reiterated that Wike remains steadfast in his mission to develop the FCT in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “The Minister has no time for attention-seeking individuals like Ugochinyere, who is constantly on the lookout for his next source of Alawee,” he said.

Olayinka emphasized that distractions from individuals or groups with ulterior motives would not derail Wike’s commitment to Abuja’s transformation.

“Those operating under defunct platforms like CUPP should find meaningful and dignified ventures rather than engaging in baseless political theatrics,” he concluded.

Salako Pledges Focus on Patient-Centered Care and Preventive Healthcare

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, has unveiled a renewed commitment to enhancing patient experiences in hospitals and prioritizing preventive healthcare as cornerstones of Nigeria’s health sector reforms.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Salako emphasized the ministry’s focus on ensuring healthcare services are human-centered and impactful.

“Everything we do, from building hospitals to employing healthcare professionals, is ultimately aimed at improving the health of Nigerians,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of patient dignity, Dr. Salako stressed that a hospital visit should leave individuals feeling respected, regardless of the outcome. “If Nigerians visit our hospitals and do not receive top-notch service or courteous care, then our efforts and resources are misdirected,” he remarked.

The minister disclosed that the federal government has allocated close to ₦2.5 trillion for critical health sector interventions, including hiring medical personnel, procuring ambulances, and constructing healthcare facilities. However, he noted that these investments must lead to measurable improvements in patient care and health outcomes.

To ensure accountability, Dr. Salako announced a shift in evaluation criteria for health institution leaders. “We will no longer focus on outputs like the number of buildings constructed or equipment procured. Instead, we will assess the impact of these infrastructures on patient care and health outcomes,” he explained.

He also underscored the importance of preventive healthcare, saying, “Prevention is better than cure, and this will be a significant area of emphasis in our plans for the coming year.” The ministry aims to launch initiatives to reduce disease prevalence and promote public health awareness.

Dr. Salako acknowledged the vital role of the media in driving these reforms. “We depend on the media for feedback and for fostering a consultative approach to policy implementation,” he said, pledging to strengthen engagement with journalists to ensure robust information dissemination and public trust.

Drawing on his personal experiences of receiving high-quality care in modest settings, Dr. Salako stressed that the quality of service, not the size of facilities, should be the benchmark for healthcare delivery.

He assured stakeholders of the ministry’s dedication to a holistic approach that bridges existing gaps and aligns with the “Health Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Together, we can build a healthcare system that not only saves lives but also restores dignity to every Nigerian seeking care,” Dr. Salako concluded.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammed Ali Pate, has declared that Nigeria is making significant strides in health sector transformation but stressed that sustained efforts are necessary to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Speaking in Abuja during a press conference to commemorate UHC Day, Pate described the country’s progress as akin to an ascending aircraft yet to reach its cruising altitude. Highlighting key achievements, he noted that 2 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) scheme in just one year. “If we had maintained this pace for two decades, over 40 million Nigerians would now have health insurance,” Pate stated, emphasizing the need for taxation revenue and strategic investment in primary healthcare to sustain these gains.

The minister outlined various initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child health, including the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative, which provides free emergency care at key facilities. Additionally, more than 230 primary healthcare centers have been completed, with 300 more under construction and another 2,000 supported by state governments. These efforts aim to expand access to essential services for vulnerable populations, particularly pregnant women and children.

Calls for Sustained Reforms and Public Awareness
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Salako Iziaq Adekunle Adeboye, echoed the need for sustained momentum and collective action. He emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prioritization of healthcare and the critical role of public awareness in promoting health insurance. “Health is an investment, and everyone must play a part in ensuring universal health coverage,” Adeboye stated. He called on the media to educate Nigerians about saving for health emergencies and investing in well-being, describing this cultural shift as vital for achieving health equity.

Global Partners Applaud Progress
Global health partners also commended Nigeria’s progress. Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative to Nigeria, praised the nation for its advancements in healthcare financing and the successful implementation of the NCA-65 activity. “Nigeria is on the right path, and its success will have transformative effects not only in Africa but globally,” he remarked, reaffirming WHO’s commitment to supporting health reforms in the country.

Dave McConalogue, Co-Chair of the Health Development Partners, highlighted the alignment and coordination brought about by the health sector compact signed a year ago. He stressed that collaboration remains essential for sustainable health sector change. Similarly, Dr. Gafar Alawode, Co-Convener of the Nigeria UHC Forum, called for deliberate strategies to expand health insurance coverage to at least 50% of the population. He emphasized the importance of innovative financing mechanisms and resource optimization.

Path to Universal Health Coverage
The stakeholders unanimously agreed that achieving UHC requires sustained commitment, innovative strategies, and collaboration among all sectors. The progress made so far underscores Nigeria’s potential to transform its health system, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

Wike Bolsters Security with 50 New Operational Vehicles

0

In a major effort to strengthen security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike handed over 50 brand-new operational vehicles, fully equipped with advanced communication gadgets, to security agencies during a ceremony in Abuja on Thursday. The initiative marks a continuation of the administration’s proactive approach to ensuring safety and security across the FCT.

Speaking at the event, Wike highlighted the central role of security in governance, stressing that without it, progress in other sectors would be meaningless. “We are building roads, yes, but if people are not alive, who will use the roads? Security is key in any government. A government that cannot protect life and property has no business being in government,” he stated. He noted that within four months, his administration had provided 100 vehicles to security agencies, a feat he described as unprecedented. Wike urged the agencies to remain proactive, especially during the festive season, declaring, “We must take the war to them and let them know we are serious.”

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, expressed profound gratitude to the minister for his commitment to enhancing security operations. He acknowledged the vehicles as a crucial addition to the police fleet, enabling swift responses to emergencies, more effective patrols, and strengthened community policing efforts. CP Disu assured the public of strategic deployment to improve response times and visibility, while fostering trust between law enforcement and residents. “Security is a shared responsibility, and we are dedicated to working with the community to foster peace and progress,” he added.

Director of Security Services, Mr. Adamu Buba Gwary, commended the administration’s inclusive approach, which involves conventional security forces, organized vigilantes, and local hunters. Highlighting a significant drop in kidnapping, banditry, and communal clashes, he attributed the progress to the administration’s provision of essential crime-fighting tools. “The Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a promise; it is being implemented with visible results,” Gwary remarked, underscoring the administration’s dedication to ensuring peace and stability in the nation’s capital.

Wike Reiterates Commitment to Land Regulation Enforcement

0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to enforce strict compliance with land use regulations and ground rent payments across the territory. Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during the distribution of 50 Hilux vehicles to security agencies, Wike declared that no amount of blackmail or sentiment would deter the FCT Administration from taking decisive actions against defaulters.

Addressing the issue of unpaid ground rents, Wike warned property owners who had been given ample notice to comply with the law.

He also cautioned construction companies against illegally claiming ownership of government-allocated lands meant for operational purposes, citing a recent case involving Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. “Having a site for construction doesn’t mean ownership. Show us documents that the land belongs to you,” Wike stated, stressing the need for transparency and due process.

In response to criticism over land revocations, including a plot reportedly linked to Niger Delta activist Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor, the minister urged affected individuals to present valid documentation for their claims. “We are not afraid of blackmail. You cannot obtain government land without formal approval or documentation. What is wrong is wrong, and no amount of blackmail can stop us,” he asserted.

Wike further announced plans to publish a comprehensive list of Abuja landowners to ensure accountability and promote transparency in land allocation and usage.

TB Conference: Stakeholders Call for Collective Action Against Tuberculosis in Nigeria

0

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant health challenge in Nigeria, requiring urgent and unified action from all sectors of society. This was the resounding message at the 8th Tuberculosis Conference held in Abuja, where Mr. Akin Jimoh, Chairman of the Media and Communication Committee and a representative of Development Communications Network, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the disease.

“When COVID-19 struck, we all rallied together to address it, saving lives through collective efforts. TB has been with us for much longer, and it takes a village to address health issues like this,” Jimoh stated. He praised the inclusiveness of current TB programming, which integrates community members into its strategies, while urging a “village reaction” where every individual views TB as a personal concern. “This is not an issue for government ministries, scientists, or researchers alone. It affects homes, families, friends, and individuals alike.”

Highlighting TB’s devastating impact on families, Jimoh stressed the importance of awareness and personal responsibility. “TB doesn’t just target individuals; it affects entire families — our children, parents, and loved ones. We must collectively step up as individuals, communities, and families to do the needful,” he urged. Drawing parallels to other public health issues, he noted, “Just as family planning requires informed decision-making, the fight against TB demands knowledge and ownership at all levels.” He expressed optimism about the progress made through community engagement, declaring, “With ongoing efforts, we are redefining how TB is addressed in Nigeria. It will never be the same again.”

The conference underscored the urgent need for governments, communities, and individuals to unite in combating TB, ensuring no one is left behind in achieving a healthier Nigeria.
