The Federal Capital Territory Administration’s efforts to woo direct foreign investment in the nation’s capital received a boost with the planned establishment of a world class 500 bed medical center.

The medical center, to be established by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is to be situated on a 5.1 hectre plot of land within the proposed Abuja Medical City Development Project in the Lokogoma District of Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello hinted.

He made this known while presenting the Certificate of Occupancy of the Land to Mr Abdoulaye Kone, the Regional Chief Operating Officer of the Bank, yesterday in Abuja, while expressing the appreciation of the FCTA to the Bank for the choice of Abuja for the establishment of the Medical center.

The Minister, who took a tour of the site with senior management staff of the FCTA said “We feel highly honoured that the African Export-Import Bank has decided to establish this very important medical facility in Abuja, the centre of Nigeria’s unity. We also feel very humbled that God has chosen all of us here to be a part of the initial phase of this project”.

Bello, however , pledged the commitment of the FCT Administration to the completion of the project. He said “I want to assure the African Exim Bank that all the organs of the Federal Capital Territory Administration will give you its fullest support to make sure that this project sees the commencement, construction, completion and final commissioning by the grace of God Almighty”

The Minister also thanked all staff of the FCT who worked hard to ensure that all the modalities for the establishment of the proposed medical center was in place and also urged the bank management to commence work on the site as soon as possible.

Speaking on receipt of the Certificate of Occupancy, Mr Abdoulaye Kone expressed the appreciation of the Bank’s President and Chairman of its Board to the FCT Administration and the Federal Government of Nigeria for expediting action in the issuance of the necessary documents including the C of O required for the establishment of the medical center of excellence. 

He said; “we accept with gratitude and thanks the Certificate of Occupancy and it would be presented to our President as soon as possible, with your message that we should start the work on ground. We have already mobilized the workers and they are on standby. They would be here, by the grace of God, on Monday (1st June) to start clearing the place and the ground breaking is also planned for the last quarter of the year”

Also speaking, the Acting Secretary of the Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr Muhammed Kawu said that the Center should minimize medical tourism by Nigerians and save much needed foreign exchange, in addition to improving the knowledge and technical capacity of Nigerian medical personnel.

The African Export-Import Bank which has its headquarters  in Cairo, Egypt, is a Pan-African multilateral trade finance institution.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Task-team on the Enforcement of COVID-19 Restrictions on Friday apprehended 74 persons travelling through the Abuja to other parts of the country.

The team, also impounded three buses, said the presiding Magistrate at the Mobile Court in Zuba, Ebiwari Damini who convicted both the drivers and passengers also punished a driver who had been previously been convicted for violating the rules.

The Magistrate also ruled that two other buses be impounded in the FCT until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Speaking to newsmen, the Chairman of the Taskteam, Comrade Ikharo Attah hinted that his team had earlier arrested the bus driver, James Adegbe while travelling from Kaduna to Kogi state.

According to him, “He was arrested, arraigned, fined and returned to Kaduna state. He turned back that same night and still found his way to Kogi state. Today again he was arrested travelling with a bus-load of passengers from Lokoja to Kaduna. The Magistrate fined him N10,000 which is double of his previous fine. He also ruled that his vehicle be impounded at the AEPB Enforcement Head office at Area 3, Garki”, Attah explained.

He further stated that, those apprehended were travelling in two trucks and 7 seven other buses.

Attah , continued: “the FCT Administration, is working closely with the security agencies will continue to ensure sustainability of the interstate travel ban as placed by the President and Commander in Chief. We are worried that the number of interstate travellers attempting to enter or pass through the FCT seems to be on the increase daily.”

He, however, called on state governments, “to tighten their own end by ensuring interstate travellers are not allowed to move with ease”.

“Sadly, some of those arrested here do not seem to understand why we are arresting them. This, I believe is because they now see it as normal because of where they are coming from. This is a Presidential Order and we must obey it to the letter until the ban is lifted”.

Among those arrested were 17 passengers who were travelling on a Trailer from Warri in Delta state to Zaria in Kaduna state.

Also arrested were nine passengers in a Hyundai Bus from Gwagwalada to Katsina, and a Trailer going from Aba to Kano state with six passengers. A Hummer bus with 18 passengers from Warri to Zaria and another Hummer bus with 10 passengers from gwagwalada to Ibadan.

A Civil Society Organization, under the agies of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America (NANNNA) has donated 300 face shields to the Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Donating the item, the leader of NANNNA, Nurse Martin Eyube, said that the gesture was to express members care and support to their country of origin and to remind Nigerians that Nigeria nurses abroad were still part of the family at home Nigeria.

He added that, “These nurses here are trained and registered in Nigeria, but they are already practising in the North American Continent in USA, Mexico, Brazil and Canada.

According to him; “The idea behind this donation is to support the healthcare system in Nigeria, we have about 300 face masks to support and contribute our own quota in the fight against COVID-19 in the Federal Capital Territory.

“The main aim of this initiative is to remind the entire Nigerian community that the nurses home and abroad are still nurses for Nigeria, haven been train earlier in their country before going out there.

He continued; “This gesture is a way of reaching out and build a robust relationship with the practising nurses here in Nigeria.

While receiving the items, the Acting Secretary of the HHSS, Dr. Mohammed Kawu, appreciated the gesture, while noting that the donation was a plus on the side of the association.

Kawu, who was represented by the the Director, Nursing Services, FCT Hospital Management Board, Mrs Grace Eleri, said that HHSS had received numerous donations from different NGOs as support to curb the spread of COVID-19.

She further stated that; “This kind of presentation has been witnessed in other states, we are really glad to have you here in FCT to donate this item in the fight against COVID-19.

“The health workers will use this protective shields to guide against the spread of the virus. They are in the war front, it is a battle field, they volunteer to be part of the COVID-19 story in order to care for this nation,” Kawu said.

Earlier, Mrs Grace Musa-Leo, Director of the Nursing Department, FCTA, HHSS appreciated the association, saying that members have really put in their best to curtail the spread of the novel Corona virus pandemic.

She prayed for God’s blessing and sustainability upon the association, adding that the donation was the beginning of better things that would enhance collaboration with nurses in Nigeria, and Federal Capital Territory.

Cadbury Nigeria Plc and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), have supported the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) with assorted palliative items to help the vulnerable communities in the war against COVID-19 pandemic in the nation’s capital. 

While presenting the items to the Administration, the Territorial Commercial Manager of North West, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, Mr. Ladi Sonuga, commended the steps taken by the administration to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in the territory, noting that it is indeed a challenging period for all Nigerians.  

He, therefore, called for concerted efforts to sustain the fight against the spread of COVID-19 in the country, Sonuga revealed that the lockdown announced by President Muhammadu Buhari, has severely hampered operational efficiency of most companies.  

His words; “As a stakeholder in the Nigerian economy, we are deeply concerned about the implications of COVID-19, and the destruction is causing to lives, livelihoods and businesses.  

He continued: “The lockdown implemented by almost all the states in the country, as well as specific lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory announced by President Muhammadu Buhari, has severely hampered operational efficiency”.

On his part, the spokesman of Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), Mr. Tolu Adeleke, also appreciated the efforts of government at all levels in the fight against the pandemic, adding that PWC has supported government efforts at different strata.  

Adeleke, also called on the authorities of the administration to judiciously distribute the palliative items to underserved communities in the territory.  

Receiving the items on behalf of the Administration, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, commended the efforts of both firms in cushioning the effect of sit-at-home order, stressing that all hands must be on deck in the battle against the dreaded disease.  

The minister who was represented by the Director of Human Resource Management, Malam Mohammed Bashir, noted that the items would in no small measure assist the administration to cushion the effect of the lockdown occasioned by the pandemic.  

Items donated by Cadbury Nigeria Plc include 500 cartons of bourvita beverage, while PWC donated 600 bags of 10kg rice, 300 cartons of indoomie and 42 cartons of vegetable oil.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu on Wednesday called on children in the nation’s capital to imbibe the virtues of honesty, discipline, hard work, moral uprightness and obedience to constituted authority.  

She made this known in her congratulatory message to all children in the FCT on the occasion of the 2020 Children’s Day in Abuja.

Saying, “on behalf of the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello and the entire management of FCT Administration, the children have been identified as national and global leaders of the future”, stressing that those virtues were essential character traits required for the building of an ideal society.  

Aliyu, however, advised them to shun all acts that might negatively impact on their lives such as dishonesty, cultism, truancy and moral decadence.  

She also advised children not to use the lockdown occasioned by COVID-19 as an excuse to be lazy or indolent but instead turn it into productive venture to learn new things from their parents and immediate environment.  

According to her; “the Federal Government and the indeed the FCT Administration are doing everything within their powers to see that the COVID19 pandemic comes to an end soon. You also must play your own part as well. Observe all the protocols of social distancing, facial covering and constant handwashing or use of hand sanitizers. I also want you to use this opportunity to learn new things from your homes and also from your immediate environment.”  

She continued “you should read new books and even learn to cook while also paying attention to your online lessons as if you are in the classroom.”  

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration which is: “Promoting Girl Child Education for Sustainable Development”, she said the education of the girl-child was of paramount importance to the Administration, adding that the education of a girl child was tantamount to the education of a nation and the FCT is promoting programmes to ensure that no girl is left behind in the quest for education.

“As part of these measures 20 vulnerable girls have been supported with scholarship grants to the FCT College of Education, Zuba. The girls have been on scholarship since their senior secondary education. This is in addition to scholarship awards to over 200 orphaned girls across the Territory.  

She added; “The FCT Administration has also trained gender officers in the management and response to gender based violence in schools as well as promotion of disability rights in schools for girls living with disabilities.  

  “Trainings were also carried out for school heads and teachers across the FCT on making schools friendlier and safer for girls. This in addition to training them on providing psycho –social support and trauma management for girls who are survivors of sexual based violence in FCT schools,” she added.  

She also urged parents to make the education of their daughters also a priority and once more wished all FCT children a happy Children’s Day celebration.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Task team on the Enforcement of Covid-19 Restrictions on Wednesday night arrested eight persons for violating the 8pm to 6am curfew imposed on the nation’s capital in the wake of the outbreak of Covid-19 Pandemic.

Some of the violators who were arrestded impersonated army officers, to evade arrest.

The violators were arrested at Kubwa and Dutse Alhaji Districts of the FCT and are to be arraigned before the Mobile Court.

Some of those arrested were in drinking bars and gardens, while a tricycle operator and a commercial motorcyclist were arrested for operating during the curfew hours.

At Second Gate, Dutse-Alhaji, the team accosted the operator of a drinking bar who claimed to be a soldier but upon interrogation he admitted that he lied in order to evade arrest. He disclosed that he is a Chef who closes late from work and not a military personnel as claimed.

Also at Dutse Makaranta, the team shut a beer parlour which was fully in operation few minutes after 10pm. The manager of the place also claimed that it is owned by a serving Major in the Nigerian Army, saying they decided to operate into the curfew hours because of the occupation of the owner.

Speaking to newsmen after the night operation, the Chairman of the Taskteam, Comrade Ikharo Attah however noted that the compliance level in Kubwa and Dutse area is very high.

He stated that, “Unlike Lugbe where we went few days ago, most of the known nightclubs and bars in Kubwa and Dutse-Alhaji are closed. Vehicular movement is very few and made up largely of those on the exemption list”.

Attah , however, decried “the level at which some residents of Dutse Alhaji and Makaranta parade themselves as military personnel even when they are not”.

He added that; “The Chef claimed to be a soldier while the beer parlour Manager said the place belongs to a Major in the Army. This must stop forthwith. People should not drag the name and image of the military in the mud.”

The Taskteam Chairman also lamented that; “Despite the high level of compliance in these areas, very few persons still seem not to fully understand the purpose of the curfew. Imagine the lady we met who claimed she was going to visit her friend after 9pm during the curfew. Also suprising this night were the two bricklayers we caught who were returned from Bauchi state despite the interstate travel ban and were going home to Bwari town. We still keep appealing to other Enforcement officers across the country to close ranks and halt the interstate travelling which seems to be going on massively despite the Presidential ban.”

In the spirit of Sallah, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State , Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu has donated her May salary to secure the immediate release of five inmates who could not pay for their fines at the Kuje Correctional Service.

Aliyu made the donation while felicitating with the inmates as part of activities to celebrate this year’s Sallah celebration, saying, the donation would further go a long way to decongest the Correctional Service already overcrowded with inmates in view of COVID-19 pandemic.  

She, however, assured the inmates that the FCT Administration would take further legal steps to see to the decongestion of the Kuje Correctional Service, however, described the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, as a God fearing man and a man with the heart of gold who believes in good governance.  

According to her; “I will not only support the reduction, but I will also lend my voice in the reduction of prison inmates by picking up some bills. I will carry out the campaign and speak to well meaning Nigerians because you cannot leave the burden of good governance to government alone.  

“We know that some of you are awaiting trial, we know that some have not been tried at all, but provided there is law, we will not be lawless. We will go by the law and get in well meaning Nigerians and pay up the fines. This will also go a long way to reduce the number besides government pronouncements.  

She continued; “Government pronouncement as we all know does not come easily in every nation. If government pronouncement comes very easily, then definitely, the name correctional centre will be misplaced. We know Mr. President recently spoke our minds when he spoke about the need to decongest our prisons.  

“And I know my Minister, a God fearing man, and a man with a heart of gold, he will certainly sent message across. God willing, FCT Administration will make moves to decongest our prison based on merit. I in my own capacity, I stand here personally on this Sallah day, I want to donate my salary for the release of 5 inmates”.  

Aliyu affirmed that the Correctional Service has been positioned to refine the inmates in the rebuilding of a better society, noting that they could make the best out of the experiences gained at the service.  

“There are times in our life that we erred, but to err is human, and to forgive is divine. There are times in our life that we are put to test, sometimes, we passed the test, sometimes we failed the test. For various reasons, we might have found ourselves at the correctional centre. But you know what, you can make the best out of it.  

“As we appreciate you, we pray for you to come out to be a better citizens that will give us a Nigeria of our dreams. Somebody else cannot give us Nigeria of our dreams and you cannot give us Nigeria of our dreams from outside, you can only give us Nigeria of our dream from within and I know you are already at the preparatory stage. When you leave here either by amnesty or whatever pronouncements, you can only become better citizens,” Aliyu stated.  

Meanwhile, the Comtroller of Correctional Service, FCT Command, Mustapha Illiyasu Atta, while commending the minister for her visit, expressed displeasure over the number of inmates awaiting trial, revealing that 70 percent of the inmates are awaiting trial list.  

Atta, also used the occasion to reveal that the Kuje Correctional Service with a capacity of 560 inmates, now accommodates no fewer than 866 inmates, while appealing to relevant authorities to work towards the decongestion of Correctional Service.    

Items donated include 250 packs of cooked jollof rice, 500 bottles of soft drinks, 500 bottles of table water, 1000 face masks, 50 bags of rice, 50 cartons of spaghetti and 100 cartons of indoomie noodles.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Enforcement Task-team on Covid-19 Restrictions has apprehended 29 commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as ‘Okada’ Riders, who were travelling in a truck from Lafia in Nasarawa state to Lagos.

The truck with registration Number LFA 837 ZX was intercepted at the AYA Bridge in Asokoro District of the FCT.

Samaila Samiya, the truck driver said, he was carrying fine stones used for making marbles and tiles was loaded in Taraba state and heading to Lagos, but that on getting to Lafia, he decided to pick the passengers after they pleaded to pay the sum of N2,000 per person.

One of the passengers, Musa Simon also said that they are commercial motorcycle operators who had left Lagos in the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown and are returning to resume work following threats by the motorcycle owners that they would sell off the motorcycles should they fail to resume work.

While addressing newsmen at the Eagle Square where those apprehended were arraigned before a Mobile Court, the Chairman of the Taskteam , Comrade Ikharo Attah said that, “despite the series of arrests, prosecution and turning back of violators by the FCT Administration, many persons are yet to fully comply with the Presidential directive on interstate travel ban”.

He said that, “Just when one feels there is enough arrest to deter people, many more would continue to move and traverse state borders.

According to him, “We in the Enforcement Team are very saddened by the way human dignity is trampled upon. How can the driver load passengers in a truck carrying stones to Lagos which is highly uncomfortable for the human body? We have seen also where persons are transported in between bags of beans, onions, fertilizers and even cement. In very sad cases, some even hide under cattle to evade arrest. Even the driver of the truck admitted that he cannot allow any member of his family to be transported in such manner.”

He continued; the truck and all its non-human contents would be impounded until the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

The men were arraigned before Magistrate Idayat Akonni who found them guilty and ruled that the truck be impounded. The driver was awarded a fine of N3,000 while the court ruled that all the occupants of the truck be sent back to their point of departure.

As Nigeria celebrates the 2020 Children Day, UNICEF Nigeria has appointed the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Nigerian musician, producer and songwriter Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo as a National Ambassador.

The appointment makes this celebrated artist UNICEF Nigeria’s first National Ambassador in 15 years.

Speaking on the appointment, Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo said , “It’s a huge honour to become a UNICEF Nigeria Ambassador.

Saying, “I am passionate about children’s rights, and I am passionate about Nigeria – and securing it’s future. The only way we can truly do that, is through ensuring every child can fulfill their potential.”

“I am thrilled to join the very impressive list of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors around the world supporting the protection and promotion of children’s rights globally and look forward to making my contribution to the improvement of the lives of Nigerian children and young people.”

Cobhams Asuquo, a lawyer by training, is a well-known singer and musician who shot to fame when he produced the debut album of Nigerian soul sensation Asa, including the hit singles, “Fire on the Mountain” and “Jailer”.

As UNICEF National Ambassador, he will help raise awareness of children’s rights concerns and solutions, including around issues such as birth registration, immunization, education, and protection from violence.

Cobhams has supported UNICEF Nigeria’s work since 2019, including through producing the hits I’m a Nigeria Child (For Every Child) calling for every Nigerian child’s rights to be respected and protected, and We go Win (Corona), to raise awareness on how Nigerians can protect themselves from COVID-19.

In 2015, Cobhams produced a song Tell Everybody, to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals, as part of the UN Global Goals campaign.

Bello Direct Markets To Open Three Times A Week

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has directed all markets in the territory to open three times a week in order to mitigate the sufferings of residents who find it difficult to buy foodstuffs due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

He added that, with effect from Monday, May 25th, 2020, the number of days that markets are allowed to operate in the FCT has been increased from 2 to 3 days in a week. Accordingly, all markets will now be opened on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8.00am to 3.00pm.

Bello made this known when he chaired a joint meeting of the FCT COVID-19 Emergency Response Team and the FCT Security Committee, as part of efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the FCT.

The Meeting deliberated on the second phase of the ease of lockdown guidelines issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 generally and as they affect the operations of markets in particular

He continued: “All new sections of the market to be re-opened as indicated above must ensure decontamination of their premises prior to commencement of business.

Market operators and customers must also observe all already established protocols of handwashing, facial coverings and social distancing;

All other measures at curtailing COVID-19 in the FCT as contained in the guidelines issued by the FCTA on the 2nd of May 2020 still subsist.
