TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

Dr Osagie Ehanire, the Minister of Health has revealed that suspected COVID-19 emergencies can now be diagnosed on site.

According to him, this will drastically reduce Turn around and waiting Time, and allow better utilization of Observation rooms.

Ehanire gave this revelation at the Presidential Task Force briefing on Covid-19 on Thursday in Abuja, saying, we are continuing with plans to reduce case fatality rate to less than 1%, by optimizing response activities and cooperation with States according to the challenges they have.

While adding that, a new state molecular laboratory is currently being optimized in Kebbi and Bayelsa States, while a Gene Expert machine have been set up at National Hospital Abuja and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada, as was announced some weeks ago.

This means that suspected COVID-19 emergencies can now be diagnosed on site, which will drastically reduce Turn around and waiting Time, and allow better utilization of Observation rooms.

He stated that, this is a major advancement in handling distress experienced by patients arriving as emergencies in these hospitals. The UATH has also found access to supplementary medical oxygen supply, courtesy of the generosity of the Nigeria Air Force, who has a good oxygen plant in Yola.

As at today, 27th August, 2020, we have recorded 53,021 COVID-19 positive cases out of 391,502 samples tested while 40,281 persons have been treated and discharged. Sadly, we have lost 1,010 persons to the virus with a case fatality rate of 1.9%

Ehanire added, they be deploying material and human resource assets from the polio eradication to surveillance and fighting other disease outbreaks, including the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

While adding that, they shall sustain our interest in developments around covid-19 around the world and seek opportunities to exchange ideas with countries and organizations investing in new knowledge.

He further added that, training and retraining on infection prevention and Control is ongoing in all our facilities as well as ensuring availability of PPEs as an investment to continue the reduction in health worker infections. He also called on health workers to ensure judicious and prudent use of these PPEs materials, while observing full IPC measures.

Finally, I wish to remind all of us that COVID-19 is still with us and will be for the foreseeable future, till there is a vaccine available for it. We are exploring all options and opportunities to ensure that when vaccines are available Nigerians will be among beneficiaries. This includes assisting NAFDAC to reach the International Maturity Level to assure products and processes, and encouraging our researchers to work towards the development of vaccine candidates.

With the imperative to reopen our economy, relax local and international air travel to support restoration of livelihoods, the experience in other countries is that covid infection rates have gone up, in some cases, dramatically. We must strive therefore, not to lose our attention to preserving lives or lose the gains we have made over the months. The onus lies not only with the Ministry of Health, but is a shared responsibility with the populace.

Our safest, easiest and cheapest option of achieving a balance remains adherence to non-pharmaceutical measures, as we have preached so many times. With these measures, we can balance or uphold our indices.

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Nigeria Country Representative, Dr walter Kazadi Mulombo WHO has congratulated Nigeria and the entire African Continent on the declaration of wild polio virus free certification that was announced on 25 August 2020.

Saying, the massive public health achievement, was made possible due to the leadership and commitment of governments, global polio partners, traditional and religious institutions, frontline health workers and vaccinators.

He made this known on Thursday in Abuja, on occasion of a World Press Conference on Thursday, 27th of August 2020 at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja following the August 25th official declaration of Nigeria and the African Region as Polio Free, while adding that, it is a moment to celebrate the many individuals that worked tirelessly to make this milestone possible.

Mulombo further stated that, the certification demonstrates what Nigeria and other African countries can accomplish when goals are backed by strong political commitment.

According to him; ” Nigeria’s battle with wild polio has been long and complex. I therefore commend the Government of Nigeria for the steadfast commitment in leading a massive national effort over the past couple of decades. The leadership of the Presidential Task Force facilitated oversight of the programme at the highest level, drawing on the necessary resources and holding states accountable for their responsibilities.

” Nigeria is lauded for several innovations that were devised to address the prevailing challenges under the strong coordination of the National Polio Emergency Operations Center. The lessons and expertise from the Nigeria experience have been useful to address other disease outbreaks and are currently being deployed to strengthen routine immunization and primary health care”, he stated.

Mulombo, however, thanked donors and partners for their full support to the polio eradication effort. The unwavering support was critical for supporting the government to implement the recommended strategies. We appreciate your commitment and count on you to continue supporting the Nigeria towards global certification and PHC systems strengthening.

He , therefore, stressed that; “As we mark this milestone, we must emphasize the need to be vigilant to prevent resurgence of wild polio virus given the disease has not been eradicated globally. 102 wild polio virus cases have so far been reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan this year.

Additionally, we are faced with the continued threat of vaccine derived polio viruses – 16 countries in the region are experiencing circulating vaccine derived polio virus outbreaks. Nigeria and the region can defeat cVDPVs and protect against WPV importation if all commit to increasing vaccination coverage and strengthening disease surveillance.

He added that, WHO looks forward to supporting you to build on the great success achieved to continuing the effort to close immunity gaps through a strong routine immunization and primary health care system.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire added that, this achievement was made possible by the strong commitment of the President of the Federal Republic and of Federal, State and Local Governments, with the support of Development Partners, Sponsors and Donors, Traditional, Religious and Community leaders, and not the least, thousands of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) staff and gallant frontline health workers, who moved from house to house, community to community, vaccinating children, sometimes under difficult and daunting circumstances.

According to him, declaring Nigeria as a polio virus free state is particularly significant for us, coming at a time when we are on the threshold of fostering an evolution in the health sector, built on the revelations and opportunities provided by the COVID-19 outbreak and inspired by the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that, the Federal Government, through NPCHDA, has mapped out various polio assets across the country and started deploying them for the purpose of other disease interventions. I urge State Governors to support this effort and begin to implement the transition of the experienced polio human resources for Health, to other areas of the health sector, especially at Primary care level. This new era can be the rallying point for progress and development of Health on the African continent and our country. This is my message for you today.

  1. Thank you for your attention and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Chloroquine Effective For Treatment Of COVID-19 In Early Stage , Says Adeyeye

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has revealed that, there is possibility that chloroquine could effectively treat Covid-19 at the early stage of infection.

She buttressed her point, saying, a research shown that chloroquine is effective for the treatment of COVID-19 at the early stage of infection.

While adding that, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had earlier hinted that the drugs may not be effective for the infection.

The NAFDAC boss gave this hint, during a virtual news conference in Abuja, saying, “In June, the FDA withdrew its approval for the emergency use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19.

She added that; “chloroquine can be used prophylactically and that countries like Ghana and Senegal have also embraced the clinical use of chloroquine for treatment.

“It is not only one drug that is effective for COVID-19 treatment but that it depends on the stage and the phases of the disease.

“On March 20, this year, I had a press briefing. At that time, people did not understand what clinical trial treatment meant. Once they hear treatment, they think you can use it anyhow. But clinical trial treatment is a research study to see whether the drug will work or not.

“In the press briefing, I said I was going through literature to see what others have done and I saw in a particular literature, a reliable publication of an article, about chloroquine and remdesivir.

Adeyeye continued; “They said in the cell culture, remdesivir and chloroquine killed COVID-19 viruses, that is, invitro – in the laboratory. But you cannot translate that to humans unless a clinical trial is done.

“I kept looking. About two weeks or so later in early March; there was a publication where 100 patients were treated with chloroquine across ten hospitals in six cities, including Wuhan. It said that all of them recovered from the symptoms. They called it that time pneumonia symptom.

“In the cells; in the lab, remdesivir and chloroquine killed COVID-19. We did not know that the disease has four stages that include pre-exposure, early-stage, severe stage and post-infection.

“At what stage would they be more effective? We didn’t know at that point. Now, we are realising that chloroquine is effective at the early stage”, she explained.

Adeyeye added that reports have also shown that remdesivir works at the last stage of the infection.

She, however, noted that the cost of treating a patient with chloroquine was cheaper than remdesivir.

NAFDAC boss added that, “Now we are talking of remdesivir. We met with Gilead , the maker of remdesivir about two months ago and they came. They said they have licensed their drug to five Indian companies and one Pakistani company,” she said.

She revealed that, “To treat an average patient will cost about $10 with chloroquine and cost about $2,500 with remdesivir.

Calls For Continuous Vaccination

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has congratulated Nigeria on being declared free of the wild poliovirus.

While stressing that achieving this milestone is not the end of the job – all children under five years must continue to be vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Saying, this is critical to significantly reduce avoidable mortality in Nigerian children under 5 years old, keep polio permanently out of Nigeria, and ensure better health and well being for future generations.

The UN agencies in a joint statement made available to newsmen in Abuja also congratulated fellow Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners in Nigeria who helped reach this achievement: Rotary International; the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC); Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI); as well as Nigerian traditional and religious leaders and volunteer community mobilisers – the latter, the foot soldiers who fought to free the children of Nigeria from the wild poliovirus.

WHO Nigeria Country Representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulumbo, said, “WHO rejoices with the people and government of Nigeria and acknowledges that wild polio-free certification is undoubtedly the greatest public health triumph in the annals of Nigeria and indeed Africa that will bequeath to posterity lessons learnt and best practices for addressing future public health interventions.”

Both UN agencies expressed strong appreciation for the role played by all stakeholders, especially the commitment and support of the Nigerian government at all levels, development partners, donors, traditional and community leaders, health workers and caregivers.

“This milestone is a clarion call to urgently rededicate resources to stopping the transmission of all types of poliovirus, strengthening routine immunization to sustain the gains achieved – especially in high risk areas and traditional polio sanctuaries – and maintaining high quality surveillance,’’ said Dr. Mulumbo.

Meanwhile, the UNICEF Representative in Nigeria Peter Hawkins, added that, “It is a momentous achievement that calls for celebration” “This historic achievement not only signifies the end of the wild poliovirus across the entire African continent, but is also a significant springboard towards attaining global polio eradication.”

“UNICEF joins Nigeria in celebrating this milestone – and congratulating Nigeria’s children, especially – but we must remember that the job is not over,” said Hawkins.

“All caregivers must continue to vaccinate their children against vaccine-preventable childhood diseases, including polio. Religious and community leaders, as champions of wild poliovirus eradication, should continue to mobilize caregivers to vaccinate their children for all preventable diseases. Children need their help now more than ever.”

“Not only is polio vaccination still crucial, all routine vaccinations are critical to children’s survival.
We must all work together to strengthen routine immunisation services and ensure that all children under five receive all vaccines, including the polio vaccine.”

“This is not the time for Nigeria to take its foot off the accelerator. This is the time for Nigeria to strengthen its primary health care system, and give routine immunisation a vital boost.”

UNICEF and WHO pledge to continue to support Nigeria to strengthen its Primary Healthcare system under the Primary Health Care Under One Roof (PHCUR) policy initiated by the Federal Government, including the goal to have at least one functional primary healthcare centre (PHC) in every ward in Nigeria.

Nigeria attained wild polio-free status after meeting all the criteria for certification, which include three years of non-detection of any wild poliovirus case in the country.

It would be recalled that before the certification, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan were the only wild polio endemic countries globally.

UBEC Executive Secretary Calls For Establishment Of Digital Resource Center

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC),  Dr Hamid Bobboyi  has called for the support of the Federal Capital Territory  Administration (FCTA) for the establishment of a Digital Resource Center in the nation’s capital.

Saying that the establishment of such a Center became imperative with the COVID-19 Pandemic where students had to take online classes.

Bobboyi  made this known when he led a delegation of top management staff of the Commission on a courtesy visit on the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello yesterday in his office on Abuja.

He, however, commended the FCT Administration for having one of the highest number of qualified teachers in the country.

He said “One of the challenges that we have in the country has been the area of qualified teachers. Looking at what is available in other parts of the country, we are very much encouraged looking at the picture here in the FCT. Despite the challenges, the FCT is deemed to have one of the highest qualified teacher numbers in the country.

He continued “Others have unqualified ratios that are very appalling. In primary schools, again, FCT qualified teachers are much higher, well above 86 percent, while at junior secondary school, you have up to about 88 percent to almost 90 percent. So, it’s a trend that we encourage for the simple fact that without qualified teachers, it’s very difficult to establish a qualitative educational system in the country.

Boboyyi  added that; “We want to extend our congratulation to you for superintending over a basic education sector that is performing very well here in the FCT. We have been visiting some of the schools, we have been looking at a lot of issues that take place within the FCT because the Commission itself is located within the FCT and its staff are also of course within the city”.

He also commended the FCT Administration for accessing its UBEC funds up to 2019 saying that many other states were still struggling adding that the FCTA has utilized the resources judiciously with the provision of infrastructure.

While speaking on the problem of out-of-school children, the UBEC Executive Secretary also said that the efforts of the FCTA in this regard has substantially reduced the number of out-of-school children in the Territory.

Earlier in his response, the FCT Minister , Malam Muhammad Musa Bello  thanked Bobboyi for the commendation and said the development of education  remains a priority for the FCT Administration.

Speaking on the establishment of the Digital Resource Center,  Bello pledged the support of the FCTA saying that it would be very difficult for agencies such as UBEC to function efficiently without leveraging on technology.

Also at the meeting the Deputy Executive Secretary (Services) of UBEC, Executive Secretary (Technical) Dr Bala Zakari, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Malam Bashir Mai-Bornu, Ag Secretary for Education, Alh. Umaru Marafa, executive Chairman, FCT UBEB, Dr Kabir Matazu, amongst others.

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday arraigned and convicted 27 persons who violated the Presidential order on Covid-19 guidelines.

This violation is against the Presidential Order pursuant to Section 4 of the Quarantine Act, Cap. 02, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The convicts (24 in numbers) were brought before the FCT Mobile Court presided over by Magistrate Idayat Akanni who sentenced the convicts to one day community service in any government agencies and fine varying between N2,000 to N 3,000 or a two weeks imprisonment.

She, however, adjoined the case of three defendants who pleaded not guilty to August 21st,2020

The Prosecutor Counsel , Udeme Umanah who read the charges before the COVID-19 regulation defulters arrested at Pana village in Utako district, said the offences bother on violation of dust -to-dawn curfew, violation of ban on social gatherings and the violation of compulsory wearing of face mask when appearing in the public.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the Chairman FCT Ministerial Task Team on COVID-19 enforcement , Comrade Ikharo Attah said Nigerians especially FCT residents should comply to the safety guidelines.

According to him; “Most of the people are thinking that the issue of COVID-19 is gone, but is not over, the fight against the pandemic is still on, so we must strictly adhere to the rules.

“We in the FCT are law abiding because the guidelines issued by the PTF have not been lifted, the people must understand that the protocols are in place, restaurants, beer parlours and drinking joints are not allowed to operate, it is because of these violations that the defulters in Pana village have been arrested” he said.

He, however, listed the places sealed for 4 days to include Chioma restaurant, Madam Okosu and Mrs. Hashimu.

While commenting on the judgement, the FCT Police command spokesperson, Anjuguri Manza said the police stance on COVID-19 regulations was still in place.

In order to efficiently manage the nation’s capital,  the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has reiterated the commitment of the FCT Administration to the deployment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) .

He made this known when he received a delegation from the National Information Technology Development Agency, (NITDA), led by its  Director General, Engr Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi on a courtesy visit to the FCTA, saying, i foresees a future where Abuja  is run fully as an ICT compliant city.

According to the Minister ; “At the FCT level, many of our agencies are already, in one form or the other, using ICT to do our work and we are moving towards improving that”.

He , however, assured his guests that the FCTA will support NITDA in its quest also to achieve this shared dream for the nation’s capital.

Bello added that, “Being in Abuja, I can assure you that we will always be available to partner with your organization to deploy whatever you need to deploy, whether it is solutions to schools that are e-based or solution to security matters or traffic management or the health system. In all these areas, we have some form of IT deployment already”.

The Minister further stated that ; “So, it’s just a matter of streamlining and upgrading and you can use Abuja as one giant platform where you can showcase what is possible so that when people come in here, you will always show them what you are doing because all the institutions that you will require to do all the deployments that you need to do are available within the FCT Administration”.

Bello also stressed that Nigeria can achieve a lot by leveraging on the ICT platform, adding that, “From what we have seen and what we read, the youth population is already fully ready for it.

He continued , “For many young Nigerians e- banking is the only form of banking that they know”. He also added that “It is very obvious also, if there is anything about COVID-19, is the fact that it has brought to the fore, the need for technology and the need for e-governance”.

Earlier, the DG of NITDA, Engr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi had solicited the support of the FCT Administration towards the establishment of an Information Technology Hub in the Territory, akin to the popular Silicon Valley in California.

He said: “NITDA is one of the drivers of that initiative and the initiative has identified five key stakeholders – universities as the producer of the human capital, government as the enabler because the government’s role in business is to provide the enabling environment.

He added that, “Then corporate organisations as the market because when you graduate from school, for most of the people, our mindset now is to look for white collar job. Then we have the innovators and the entrepreneurs, which can be students or graduates. Then venture capitals who can invest”.

The NITDA Boss who stated that ICT was the third major contributor to the nation’s GDP, said at the rate the world is moving, ICT was going to dominate everything. He added that, “As we are today, ICT powers almost everything we do, from office to personal things. Therefore, ICT is central to the development of any country”.

Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Malan Bashir Mai-Bornu, the Director of Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS), Dr Isa Jalo and other senior members of staff of the FCTA.

FG To Prepare For Covid-19 Invasion Of Rural Areas With Testing, First Aids, Others

Dr, Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health
Dr, Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire said there is good reason to prepare for Covid-19 invasion of rural areas with testing, first aid, ambulance service and commensurate Isolation and treatment centers.

This is as we expand and include small towns and rural areas in our testing scope, a more accurate picture of our Covid-19 status will emerge.

Ehanire made this known in Monday at the Presidential Task Force briefing in Covid-19, saying, the apparently fewer covid positive cases of the past few days give us no reason to rejoice or to lower our guard.

According to him; “However, we note with concern, the development in many overseas countries, of sharp upsurge in covid-19 cases, after they lifted or relaxed restrictions in air travel, commerce and especially in social activities. We know that some countries had to quickly restore lockdown or limit movement of citizens and even to postpone elections, in order to deal with the COVID-19 spike. In one country thousands of members of congregation of a religious group had to be put in quarantine, having tested positive.

“These are significant lessons for us, as we prepare to reopen our economy and as we consider options for resuming flights and travel operations, or opening schools and land borders. Unless we utilize lessons learned to define and set measured precautionary steps to mitigate the risks, the danger of falling into the same negative balance in our own COVID-19 strategy and losing the gains made so far, is real. The impact of lockdown on livelihoods and socio-economic activities is well known and serious and what we wish to avoid. The other side of this coin is the question of what we need to do to take up the challenge of keeping control of covid-19, as we reopen. This is a shared responsibility of government and people and an assignment for the entire country. It has been repeatedly stressed that the easiest, cheapest, well proven options are still the simple nonpharmaceutical interventions, like wearing masks, avoiding crowds and frequently washing hands. It is the least citizens can contribute, by adhering to these, and urging their neighbors to adhere, so that we together stand a better chance of limiting the negative consequences on the economy of easing and opening the borders.”, he explained.

He added that, “As of 17th August, 2020, Nigeria has recorded 49,068 covid-19 cases from 352,625 samples tested so far, with 36,497 persons successfully treated and discharged. We have sadly had 975 fatalities and a case fatality rate still about 2%. We continue to strive to lower the case fatality rate to less than 1%, because we believe more lives can be saved from COVID29, with the knowledge and system strengthening we have achieved over the past 6 months, even though I hasten to add that we do not yet know enough about covid19. But what we are sure of so far, is that strong response to COVID-19 is a collaborative effort between citizenry and government for the benefit of all Nigerians. While government provides direction, guidance and resources, citizens are to take ownership of the response”.

He said that, the continuity of health routine services, capacity building of health workers and their protection are paramount, to the Federal Ministry of Health and it is therefore a good opportunity to now urge our health workers to continue to focus on their assignments, from traveler screening, surveillance, sample collection, laboratory analysis to hospital and other forms of care. It is critical to maintain strict Infection Prevention and Control measures at all times, help to educate citizenry, support uptake of testing and reporting early for treatment when the test is positive.

The Minister added that, the National Health System is responding well enough so far to the COVID-19 challenge. Collaboration with States and Local Governments remains a cornerstone of a successful strategy. The Federal government is doing the needful to support funding to States, from disbursements of BHCPF to funding from the REDISSE program and PTF and other sources under preparation.

Ehanire stated that, “I paid an inspection visit to the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) of the National Centre for Disease Control for an assessment of our covid-19 response efforts in the pillars under its purview. I noted strategies to improve the call connect center, surveillance, case finding, sample collection and testing, and in particular, the issue of Turnaround Time for testing, were discussed. NCDC is also making efforts to ensure that all laboratories in our network have a turnaround time under 24 hours. Nigeria continues to monitor new diagnostic technology, including saliva-based covid19 test, that is under development.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is working with its Agencies and partnering with State governments to serve rural areas by maintaining routine service and taking COVID-19 response to LGAs with sample collection sites, Holding Rooms and Oxygen treatment centers. State Epidemiologists are requested to speed up processing of test results and facilitate treatment and Isolation of positives, to address gaps in the value chain.

“I also visited the Thisday Dome Treatment Centre where over 120 patients have received treatment. The centre is functioning smoothly and I have directed it be upgraded to a comprehensive level 3 centre with functional Intensive Care Unit and dialysis facilities”, he added.

As Aliyu Flags Off 2020 Tree Planting Campaign

TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, said the Administration was investing in the adoption of solar lighting to illuminate streets in the satellite towns of the territory.

She made this known at the official flag-off of 2020 Tree Planting campaign in Karshi, Abuja Municipal Area Council, while stressing that the FCT Administration was working on other innovative solutions capable of earning carbon credits with which to spur development in the satellite towns.

She stated that, Tree Planting campaign was an annual global event meant to create awareness amongst citizens on the need to sustainably manage forests for the purpose of meeting the developmental needs of the present generation without compromising the opportunity of future generations to manage theirs.

To this end, she said the administration was working on a number of policy instruments to enhance the protection of the territory’s tree stock, adding that efforts are also being expended to promote the wide adoption of climate-friendly practices across the nooks and crannies of the territory.

Speaking on this year’s theme “Forests and Biodiversity: Too Precious to Lose”, the minister noted that this could not have been coined at a better time than now when all hands need to be on deck to ensure the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Her words; “Goals 13 and 15 of the SDGs require all and sundry to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”.

She, however , called on other relevant departments to, as a matter of urgency, join hands with the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) in the re-vegetation of all open spaces, degraded hill tops and hill slopes, reclaim old burrow-pit as well as rivers and flood-prone areas to prevent and mitigate adverse environmental consequences in the satellite towns of the territory.

Amity further said that the STDD has earmarked 48,000 assorted indigenous tree species to be planted in the six Area Councils and 20,000 to be donated to foreign Embassies/High Commissions, FCT Public and Private Schools, religious bodies among others.

Earlier, the Ag. Coordinator of FCT Satellite Towns Development Department, Engr. Felix Nwankwo, identified the environment as an asset to the present and future generations, hence the need for its sustainable management, noting that incidences of ecological and environmental disasters ravaging the entire globe are the direct consequences of man-made and natural factors.

Nwankwo, affirmed that trees in an environment are known to enhance the supply of oxygen to the atmosphere which serves as immunity booster to citizens thereby reducing the expected susceptibility to COVID-19 fatalities.

The highpoint of the occasion was the planting of trees by the FCT Minister of State, Chairmen of Area Councils, heads of agencies, traditional and religious leaders across the six area councils of the territory.
