Cholera Threat Looms as Rainy Season Nears: NCDC Warns of High-Risk Communities, Urges Immediate Action

0

***Nigeria Records 34 Deaths , 1,307 Suspected Cases

As Nigeria braces for the peak of the rainy season, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Jide Idris, has raised the alarm over a possible surge in cholera outbreaks, revealing that 1,307 suspected cases and 34 deaths have already been reported across 30 states and 98 Local Government Areas this year.

Dr. Idris, who addressed journalists at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, warned that over 3,300 communities in flood-prone areas are at immediate or moderate risk of cholera transmission due to limited access to clean water and poor sanitation.

“The current case fatality rate of 2.6% is above our target of less than 1%. This is unacceptable and preventable,” Dr. Idris declared. “We are urging states to activate their emergency preparedness plans and avoid suppressing data. Timely action can save lives.”

He cited projections from the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook which identified over 1,200 high-risk communities in 176 LGAs, and another 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs at moderate risk, emphasizing the need for localized and proactive responses.

Ongoing Threats: Lassa Fever, Cerebrospinal Meningitis, and Mpox

Dr. Idris also provided updates on other major disease threats:

Lassa Fever: A decline in cases has been recorded, from 41 in epidemiological week 12 to 10 in week 16. Cumulatively, Nigeria has reported 4,253 suspected cases, 696 confirmed, and 132 deaths, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 19.0%.

Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM): The outbreak is showing signs of containment, with a steady decline in cases over the last three weeks. Vaccination and community outreach have helped reduce mortality.

Mpox: From January to mid-April 2025, 723 suspected cases and 136 confirmed cases have been recorded in 27 states and the FCT, with three fatalities reported. “Mpox remains a concern with community and healthcare-associated transmission still ongoing,” Dr. Idris said.

In response to these threats, NCDC has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), optimized five Mpox testing labs across the geopolitical zones, and conducted training for health workers on infection control and case management.

“We’ve prepositioned vital supplies and intensified public communication to reach vulnerable populations,” Dr. Idris added. “But health workers and communities must remain vigilant.”

Dr. Idris emphasized that cholera is a highly contagious but preventable and treatable disease, spread through contaminated food and water. He warned that flooding, open defecation, and poor hygiene practices heighten the risk, especially in urban slums and rural communities.

Symptoms include sudden watery diarrhea, vomiting, and rapid dehydration, which can lead to death within hours if untreated. The NCDC advises the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and prompt medical attention.

The NCDC has issued strong recommendations to health workers, state governments, and the public:

For Health Workers: Report suspected cases promptly, adhere to infection control measures, and educate patients on hygiene.

For States: Activate preparedness plans, ensure provision of clean water, sanitation, and conduct vaccination campaigns in hotspots.

For the Public: Boil drinking water, maintain hygiene, avoid raw street foods, and seek immediate care for diarrhea.

Dr. Idris concluded by reaffirming NCDC’s commitment to protecting public health, calling for collaborative, sustained efforts to reduce mortality and contain outbreaks before they spiral out of control.

“We are not helpless. With timely surveillance, public cooperation, and government commitment, we can prevent these diseases from claiming more lives,” he said.

The agreement, involving the CGCOC Group and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), targets improved electricity and water supply in the FCT.

President Tinubu, under his Renewed Hope Agenda, had approved ₦50 billion for the implementation of water supply projects in FCT satellite towns, particularly in Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Kuje Area Councils.

Wike’s trip to China underscores his commitment to actualizing the President’s directive to ensure accessible and safe water in underserved FCT communities. The Minister is expected back in Nigeria next week.

Speaking during the 2025 International Labour Day celebration held in Abuja, Wike emphasized that a motivated and well-supported workforce is essential to effective public service delivery and national development.

Highlighting recent achievements, Wike listed the prompt implementation of the new salary structure, recruitment of 60 doctors for residency training, renovation of government offices, and plans for staff regularisation and promotion exercises.

Addressing the ongoing strike by Area Council workers over the non-payment of the minimum wage, Wike stated, “I had approved the release of N4.17 billion to the six Area Councils for wage payment. I now urge them to do the needful and pay workers their due.”

He also noted ongoing efforts to improve the working conditions of Area Council teachers, including school renovations and enhanced provision of learning materials.

On this year’s Workers’ Day theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” Wike said it was a timely reminder of the need to protect worker rights, promote dialogue, and uphold democratic participation even in difficult times.

“The civic space must not shrink in hardship—it should expand through partnership and mutual respect,” he added.

The Minister concluded by commending all workers for their sacrifices and resilience, noting that their dedication is key to building a better future for both the FCT and Nigeria at large.

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has called for increased support from the United States in intelligence sharing, counterterrorism efforts, and the enhancement of military capabilities to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Minister Matawalle made this appeal during a meeting with Major General Garrick Harmon, the Director for Strategy, Engagement, and Programs of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), who is on his inaugural official visit to Nigeria in his current capacity. The meeting took place at Ship House in Abuja.

During the high-level discussions, Matawalle underscored the significance of strengthening bilateral defence relations and urged the United States to expand its assistance in critical areas, including intelligence cooperation, technical training, logistics, and equipment support.

“Nigeria is dedicated to promoting regional peace and security; however, we cannot achieve this alone,” he stated.

“We require more robust support from the United States, particularly in intelligence sharing and capacity building, to effectively combat terrorism, insurgency, and transnational threats,” he emphasized.

In response, Major General Garrick Harmon expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in enhancing security and stability across West Africa. He noted that despite the brief duration of his visit, the engagements in Nigeria have been highly productive and highlight the strength of the existing partnership between the two nations.

CAN President Calls for National Healing, Mutual Trust at NIREC Meeting in Imo

0

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Interreligious Council (NIREC), Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh, has issued a stirring appeal for national healing and mutual trust as essential pillars for peace and unity across Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening of the first tri-annual NIREC meeting for 2025, held in Owerri, Imo State, Archbishop Okoh emphasized that the gathering reflected a shared yearning for a more united and peaceful country. The event, themed “Building Mutual Trust for National Unity,” convened religious leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders from across the nation.

“We gather not only as religious leaders but as citizens who love this country deeply and desire its peace and prosperity,” he said, while commending Governor Hope Uzodinma for hosting the meeting and for his inclusive approach to governance in the South-East.

Archbishop Okoh also applauded Senator Dr. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for his steadfast support of NIREC’s peacebuilding mandate. He described the council, established in 1999, as “a moral compass and a bridge of understanding between the two major faiths in Nigeria.”

According to him, the nation’s current divisions demand urgent attention and sincere reconciliation. “Without mutual trust, unity becomes an illusion. Trust must be earned through sincerity, empathy, and fairness,” he stressed.

Calling for a shift from mutual suspicion to mutual trust, Okoh challenged Nigerians to reject stereotypes and embrace their shared humanity. “We must make Nigeria work. We must see one another through the dignified lens of shared humanity under one God,” he said.

He further advocated for truth-telling, correcting historical injustices, and promoting inclusion and diversity as pathways to national healing. “Only a healed nation can trust itself. And only a trusting nation can truly prosper,” he added.

Quoting Romans 12:18, he urged religious communities to “live at peace with everyone,” asserting that Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a source of strength, not division.

In a significant announcement, the Archbishop revealed the inauguration of Interreligious Councils across all five South-East states. He clarified that these are not political instruments, but rather “sacred spaces for sincere dialogue, healing, and community building.”

He expressed hope that the deliberations at the meeting would lead to actionable outcomes. “Let us be the generation that chooses dialogue over division, healing over hatred, and unity over discord,” Okoh declared.

The meeting marks a renewed commitment by NIREC to deepen interfaith collaboration and foster peace as a foundation for national development.

Reshape Nigerians’ Attitude to Drive Progress, Alake Urges NIPSS

0

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has called on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to focus its intellectual capacity on reshaping the mental attitude of Nigerians, emphasizing that mindset reorientation is critical to effective governance and sustainable national development.

Speaking in Abuja while receiving participants of the Senior Executive Course 47 (2025) from NIPSS, Dr. Alake commended the institute’s reputation as Nigeria’s top policy think tank but urged it to do more in translating ideas into actionable policies that can drive real change.

“We’ve had several development plans in this country, but implementation has often failed due to fragmented approaches,” he noted. “NIPSS was created to inject deep intellectualism into governance, but there’s clearly a disconnect—either public officials are not engaging enough with its recommendations, or the institute’s outputs are not being rendered in practical, implementable formats.”

Turning attention to the mining sector, the Minister decried its long neglect, which he said created room for illegal activities and massive loss of national resources. He, however, expressed confidence in ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration, citing significant progress.

He disclosed that the newly deployed Mining Marshals have recorded over 300 arrests of illegal miners in less than a year, with about 150 prosecutions underway—including foreign nationals—and the recovery of 98 illegal mining sites. Nine convictions have so far been secured.

Dr. Alake also lauded the success of the ministry’s cooperative-based model for artisanal miners, saying over 250 cooperatives have been formed to formalize their activities, enhance government oversight, and improve revenue generation through royalties.

“Nothing can go right when the national mindset is wrong,” the Minister stated. “President Tinubu’s reforms are aimed at stopping the systemic bleeding—blocking leakages and laying the groundwork for long-term prosperity.”

In his remarks, Mr. David Aloh, who spoke on behalf of the NIPSS delegation, described the session with the Minister as “insightful and enriching,” noting that the team had gained valuable understanding of the ministry’s operations, including those of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO), especially within the context of Nigeria’s green economy drive.

“On behalf of the Director-General, management, faculty, and participants of Course 47, we deeply appreciate this engagement. The knowledge acquired here will guide us in carrying out our mandate under Mr. President’s directive,” he said.

Wike’s Aide Slams Dele Momodu, Says “You’ll Dump Atiku Once the Cash Stops Flowing”

0

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused veteran journalist and Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu, of political hypocrisy and financial opportunism.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Olayinka alleged that Momodu’s loyalty to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is driven by monetary gain, asserting that the moment Atiku ceases to fund him, Momodu would quickly abandon the relationship.

“Only someone like Dele Momodu, who operates solely on stomach infrastructure, would accuse Wike of driving Peter Obi out of the PDP,” Olayinka said. “His ignorance or selective memory is both laughable and dangerous.”

The FCT Minister’s spokesperson went further to blame Atiku for being a divisive figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming he has been a stumbling block since 2003.

“Atiku has been the instrument used to weaken the PDP, beginning with the sabotage of the party’s bid to take Lagos in 2003. He is no unifier; his ambition has consistently torn the party apart,” Olayinka alleged.

Reacting to Momodu’s statement that Atiku wanted the PDP to zone its 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast, Olayinka dismissed it as dishonest. “Why did Atiku purchase the Expression of Interest form even before zoning was determined? That alone debunks the claim.”

He also reminded the public of the mass defection of Atiku’s allies after both the 2019 and 2023 elections: “Was it Wike who told Senator Gbenga Daniel, Atiku’s campaign DG in 2019, to quit PDP? Did Wike convince his 2023 running mate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to walk away from the party? What about Udom Emmanuel, who chaired the 2023 campaign—his successor is also on his way out.”

According to Olayinka, this pattern reflects Atiku’s self-centered politics: “The only explanation is that Atiku is in it for himself. He uses people, then discards them—and they, in turn, abandon him after every election.”

On Momodu’s claim that Wike distanced himself from the Southeast, Olayinka fired back: “Wike is a proud Ikwerre man. Unlike Dele Momodu, who seems unsure of his Edo roots, Wike knows who he is and where he stands.”

Concluding his remarks, Olayinka branded Momodu a “fair-weather friend,” whose loyalty is dictated by bank alerts. “All this noise is because Atiku is still paying him. Once the money dries up, Momodu will move on to his next benefactor.”
