Rise Above Entitlement Mentality, Ndiomu to Niger Delta Youths

0

The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), has urged youths in the Niger Delta region to “rise above the entitlement mentality”, to set the stage for success.

Interim Administrator of the PAP, Major General Ndiomu (rtd), gave the charge while speaking on Saturday in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, at the 3rd Niger Delta MSME Summit.

“If you rise above entitlement mentality, the sky will be too small to be your starting point. Everybody stands a chance,” he said, adding that the youths must begin to think out of the box and come up with innovative ideas.

Ndiomu said the war between Russia and Ukraine has exposed the harsh realities surrounding grains globally.

“There is scarcity of grains, starch globally now, and we have cassava plantations all over the region,” he said.

He noted that very soon, brewery companies in Nigeria will start looking for starch. “This global shift affects everybody”.

The interim Administrator who was represented by Musa Wilfred, PAP’s Head of Reintegration, thus advised the youths to heighten awareness, and take advantage of the current situation.

He reiterated that the “mandate” of PAP remains “to manage the destiny of thousands of youths and we have decided to begin to reason outside the box”.

“We must understand the times and take advantage properly. We must map out opportunities. We must be in a place where we are able to adequately predict the future. We must innovate, we must remind our delegates that there is virtue in adversity, resilience. Good things don’t come cheap.

“There is a notion about the region out there, and we must all agree jointly to alter that narrative.
“As young business owners, you must understand that beyond innovation, collaboration, networking, access to funds, loans and grants, lobbying, you have a role to play. You must embrace discipline, mentoring. You must understand that good things don’t come easy. You must understand that for every height you want to attain, there is a price to pay. Young leaders must be ready and willing to pay the price,” Ndiomu said.

While advising the youths to keep a calm head, he reminded them that skill without character is useless. “You must be worthy in skill and character”.

FG, Foundation Signs MOU on Tackling Acute Cancer Burden

0

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Medicaid Cancer Foundation, City Cancer Challenge Foundation (C/Can), and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Health and FCT Administration have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to address the challenge of Nigeria’s rising cancer burden.

The historic agreement, which was signed in Abuja, includes the capital of Nigeria in a growing network of C/Can cities dedicated to improving cancer care, signaling the government’s effort to reduce the acute cancer burden.

This information was provided in a press release from City Cancer Challenge that was made accessible to journalists on Thursday.

The statement revealed that cancer is responsible for 79,000 deaths and approximately 124,000 new cases in Nigeria each year, accounting for the second highest cancer burden in Africa.

It added that the multi stakeholder commitment by national and subnational governments, international health organisations and civil society, represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts against cancer.

According to the statement, Abuja is the 14th city and the fourth African city to join the growing C/Can network alongside Kumasi (Ghana), Kigali (Rwanda) and Nairobi (Kenya).

Commenting on the
agreement’s significance,
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Engr, P. Funso Adebiyi, said: “This collective effort strengthens the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a healthier Nigeria by urgently reducing our country’s cancer incidence and mortality.”

Similarly, FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusade Adesola, noted that: “Given Nigeria’s sizable population within the region, Abuja’s partnership with C/Can carries immense potential for broad-scale impact on our health systems and the health of our population.”

Also speaking, CEO for C/Can,
Isabel Mestres, who opined that progress has already been made, said “Throughout 2022, with the support of C/Can, Abuja has undertaken a robust due diligence process.

” This has provided a
comprehensive understanding of the local cancer care landscape, paving the way for the next steps,
including the launch of a three-year City Engagement Process.”

Not left out, CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudud said: “Alone, we can do a lot. However, as partners, we can strengthen Abuja’s cancer ecosystem.

“I am certain that this partnership with C/Can will achieve the much-needed transformation.”

Furthermore, Executive Vice President of the
Clinton Health Access Initiative Nigeria, Owens Wiwa noted: “Through C/Can, we have an unparalleled opportunity to
ensure that progress made in cancer care at a city level will benefit the most people in both Abuja and the rest of Nigeria.”

” Abuja’s successful application to join C/Can was supported by the FCT Administration and Ministry of
Health of Nigeria and led by a task force of leading organisations, including civil society.C/Can is set to launch a new call for city applications later in 2023.

“To ensure the success of the initiative, the city of Abuja has, over the last two years, conducted
assessments to inform the development of a strategy to implement the project, culminating effectively in a three-year City Engagement Process.

“Guided by the principle that cities are crucial to driving meaningful change through local engagement and global partnerships, the C/Can initiative supports cities to develop data-driven, locally relevant and
sustainable cancer care solutions.

“The C/Can City Engagement Process will be led by a local governance body, the City Executive Committee, with the support of a dedicated city manager, to engage stakeholders in identifying needs,
and implementing locally-created cancer care solutions.

“C/Can supports cities around the world as they work to improve access to equitable, quality cancer care. Since its launch in 2017 by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), C/Can has developed a new model of addressing access to cancer care that, for the first time, leverages the city as a key enabler in a health systems response to cancer”, it added.

Alleged Fraud: NUPRC Staff Urges Tinubu To Sack Komolafe

***As Protesting Staff Picketed, Barricaded NUPRC, Places Casket Bearing ‘RIP Fraud At Main Entrance

Following the expiration a 24-hour ultimatum, the aggrieved staff of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), formerly Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) today picketed and barricaded the Commission, to demand the immediate sack of the Chief Executive, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe over alleged fraud and abuse of office.

The protesting staff dressed in black and red attire, in their hundreds besieged and placed a casket bearing ‘RIP Fraud’ at the main entrance to the NUPRC complex, at Idris Ibrahim Crescent, off the major road leading to Lifecamp/Wuse axis in Jabi, Abuja

They chanted “Komolafe must go”, for allegedly deliberately reframing from opening channels of communication to address concerns about manifest mismanagement of the commission and poor employees welfare through the two years of his stewardship.

They, however, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack Komolafe or order him to resign, to pave way for an urgent unrestrained forensic audit of all contract processes and payments by the commission under his watch.

The National Treasurer, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, (PENGASSAN), Comrade Owan David, who joined the protest, reiterated that in spite of the effort to resolve burning issues threatening wellbeing of the Commission and industry at large, the Komolafe’s led NUPRC had paid a deaf ear to them, leaving the staff union with no option, other than peaceful protest, to register their grievances.

He, therefore, warned that if nothing was done to address the situation, workers through the instrumentality of the union will not hesitate to withdraw from their duty posts nationwide, and mobilize to join the protest in Abuja, until the authorities take necessary
action to save the commission from total collapse.

Earlier, the Branch Chairman of the NUPRC Workers’ Union, Comrade Okechukwu Anya, decried that the embattled management instead of urgently engaging and addressing their grievances, had resulted to intimidating the staff union leaders for speaking up and asking for improved working conditions at the commission.

Anya hinted that NUPRC under Komolafe, has recorded depths of corruption, staff neglect, sexual harassment, and gross mismanagement of its funds.

He added that appalling neglect of staff welfare is highlighted by the commission’s inability to cover medical services for staff due to heavy unpaid debts, non-payment of statutory group life insurance and pension claims, and chronic underpayment of staff entitlements.

According to him, the NUPRC has been turned into a hotbed of favouritism and patronage, with the recruitment of over 140 individuals, without proper procedures and in violation of the Federal Public Service rules and the Federal Character Commission’s policies on equal opportunities.

In a long outlined alleged fraudulent activities of the NUPRC boss, the workers’ union states: “Our investigation reveals that Engr. Gbenga has utilized his position to continually exploit the commission’s coffers to satisfy his personal interests.

“His flagrant disregard for the plight of his staff and the well-being of the nation is nothing short of scandalous deserving of an urgent
unrestrained forensic audit of all contract processes and payments.

“Top on the list of his nefarious activities is the shameful non-payment of gratuities to staff who retired in 2022. Despite numerous pleas from these retirees and securing virement of about 10 billion Naira from the National Assembly intended to cover these payments, he instead
misappropriated these funds, donating an astonishing 4 billion Naira to political parties in the run-up to elections, in a blatant bid to retain his position and squandering the rest.

” Gbenga and the Commission’s Board Secretary, Mrs. Anyanechi Olayemi, are implicated in multiple instances of financial racketeering, using inflated contracts to
legal firms to siphon corporate and collective funds from the commission, amounting to over 1 billion Naira in 2023 alone.

“Despite the commission’s technical mandate, Gbenga and his cronies have wasted a staggering 900 million Naira on dubious ‘sensitization workshops’, a further 500 million Naira on office renovations and furniture
procurement, and an unconscionable 1.5 billion Naira on luxury transportation including private jet travel and first-class flights, in violation
of presidential directives.

“In addition to these issues, the NUPRC under Gbenga is mired in infrastructural deficiencies and a decline in crude oil production, plunging from a daily production of 1.672M bopd in 2021 to a worrying
average of 1.452M bopd. This decline speaks volumes about the mismanagement and incompetence of the NUPRC under Gbenga’s leadership.

“This report represents the latest in a long line of scandals tied to the leadership of Engr. Komolafe Gbenga. It is high time for thorough scrutiny, forensic audit of the Commission and decisive action to end these outrageous abuses of power. The employees of the NUPRC and the people of Nigeria deserve better. The question that remains: will the authorities take action?”.

Meanwhile, when contacted for reaction, the Head, Public Affairs Unit (PAU), of the commission, Adamu Garba, who declined commenting on the matter, as he was on leave.

Garba, when pressed on to comment, insisted that he was not in the know of the development, stressing that he had embarked on the leave for about a month period, however offered to provide the contact of his deputy, Carol Chika, who should be in a better position to react to such request, aimed at balancing this report.

But, NUPRC’s head of PAU, as of the time of filling this report, failed to provide his deputy’s contact.

Bayelsa APC Elders Did Not Call For Ndiomu’s Sack – Sen. J. K.
Brambaifa

0

Major-General Barry Ndiomu (Rtd), the interim administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), has been exonerated by prominent elders and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State.

The Elders claimed at a news conference on Tuesday in Yenagoa that the people behind the appeal are not part of the state’s APC Elders Forum and do not exist in any way.

Senator John Kojo Brambaifa, a former member of the National Assembly, spoke on behalf of the forum and claimed that the nonexistent group was sponsored to execute the hatchet job because they were suffering from self-inflicted anguish and resolved to do it.

“It has come to the knowledge of the members of APC in Bayelsa West Senatorial District that in the very recent past, precisely, about a fortnight ago, there is a self-seeking news item making rounds in the media, purportedly signed by amorphous APC Elders forum in Bayelsa State, calling for the immediate sack of Major General Barry Tariye Ndiomu as the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

“In the said news item circulating in several social media platforms, the said anonymous forum gave some nebulous reasons as the grounds for the call for the sack of the amnesty boss.

“We wish to state unequivocally and unambiguously that there was no time APC Elders forum in Bayelsa State took a decision to call for the sack of the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, as they always form an integral part of the various fora that make up the party in the state,” Brambaifa said.

“The members of APC from Bayelsa West Senatorial District maintain that the present PAP helmsman has created far-reaching impacts in the programme and has contributed significantly to the improvement of the party in the state with the sound reform measures so far taken to reposition the programme that was gradually cascading to a moribund state.

“The APC members express shock over the show of ingratitude by such a pseudo platform, as they failed to appreciate the progressive ideas initiated and implemented by the Interim Administrator to revamp the interventionist agency.”

The Bayelsa APC Elders maintained that they are proud of the achievements of Ndiomu in only ten months in office and will continue to support him to succeed.

They particularly commended his effort in introducing worthy and creative ideas like the Cooperative Scheme for ex-agitators, noting that it will produce the desired result for the benefit of all Niger Deltans.

According the Bayelsa West APC stakeholders, “the establishment of a Cooperative
Society will encourage hard work and agitators, which is in common work and deepen the rehabilitation and reintegration of the ex-agitators which is in consonance with the original intention of the programme.

“We therefore call on the APC led federal government and the general public to disregard the said malicious news item, as it was borne out insatiable appetite and greed for personal gains and deliberate show of discontentment towards the phenomenal improvement of the activities of the agency following the reform measures undertaken by the present Interim Administrator of the programme.

“We also use this medium to express our total support for the reform measures designed to reinvigorate the activities of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and, as a result, call on the federal government to retain the appointment of Major General Barry Tariye Ndiomu as the head of the PAP in order to complete the ongoing reforms that will encourage multiplier effect in the Niger Delta with the concomitant peace that follows”.
