The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the federal government to address the current issue of fuel and naira scarcity in the country.
NLC said it would direct its members to stay away from various workplaces and mobilise for mass actions if the lingering issues persist.
The new President of NLC, Comrade Ajaero made this known in Abuja while briefing journalists on the outcome of the Central Working Committee meeting of labour.
He lamented that Nigerians , including workers are not only subjected to untold hardship, but are also pushed to the wall, hence, NLC can no longer keep quiet
“Gentlemen of the press, it will interest you to know the state of the nation at this critical point that our economy is in.
“First, you may have noticed that it is actually difficult for Nigerian workers to access their hard-earned money in banks and Nigerians are questioning the inability of banks to provide them their money which they were asked to pay into the bank.
“You would also have noticed that it is difficult to see petroleum products. Where you see in some parts of this country, a litre costs as much as N350 and above.
“On the issue of cash crunch, the NLC is giving the federal government of Nigeria and agencies of government, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and other banking institutions seven working days to address the issue of the cash crunch.
“If they fail to do this at the expiration of the seven days, the congress will direct all workers in the country to stay at home because it has become very difficult to access money to enter vehicles to their workplaces.
“It is difficult, even difficult to buy products, especially from traders who don’t have bank accounts,” Ajaero told journalists at the briefing.”
He added, “On this issue of fuel, the congress wishes to inform the Federal Government that we will no longer keep quiet on this issue of perennial fuel scarcity and arbitrary increases on petroleum.”
*** Declares His Emergence Will Bring Back The Glory Days Of Cross River State.
Sen. Sandy Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is running for governor in the Cross Rivers State elections in 2023, has the support of the Concerned Group for Justice & Democracy (CONJAD), a pressure group that promotes democratic values and effective government.
The statement was made during a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja by the group’s Director-General, Mr. Emmanuel Eyaba.
Eyaba, a native of Cross River State, claims that CONJAD’s position on Onor is in the “overall best interest of Cross River State” despite being non-partisan in its support for competent leadership at all levels.
“At this juncture in the leadership trajectory of our dear state, we need to look beyond party interests and sentiments, and settle for someone with the necessary competency and character to lift Cross River from its current quagmire.
“Having carefully x-rayed all the governorship candidates of the various political parties, we are of a strong conviction that with the emergence of Sandy Onor as governor,Cross Rivers State will be restored to its glory days.
“We are not politicians, CONJAD is made up of professionals from cross Nigeria, including Cross River state ,who are resident in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), that seek better Governance and Democracy in Nigeria.
“As advocates of good leadership, part of our goal is to support anyone that can deliver the dividends of democracy, drive the economy and lift people from hunger, especially at the grass root.
“This is not about the sentiment of my party or not my party, but about the individual with the pedigree to deliver on basic infrastructure and job creation, especially for our teeming youths and secure the future of cross river people, and the time is now.
Eyaba added that ,“Don’t forget that Sandy Onor is senator representing the Central District of Cross River State and he has made massive impact on his people, especially through the provision of relevant infrastructure , including road intervention projects, community civic centers/town halls interventions as well as Education/school intervention project.
Other Executives of CONJAD who led their voices to the call for Onor’s Governorship include Mrs Egor Kelly Odock, Head of Media , Agbor Ayuk, Director of Strategy and Annosong Bookish, Director of Communications.
Also speaking at the event, the group’s head of Contact and Mobilization, Pauline Jonathan Idemudia ,said the group was working assiduously to ensure that massive votes were delivered to Sen. Onor across the state come March 11.
She therefore called on “Cross Riverians” , especially youths and women to shun voting along party lines and vote for the individual with the requisite antecedence to rescue the state.
“We want to influence voters directly for Senator Sandy Onor because we are sure when he gets into government, things will be better for our people and we want our youths and women to understand this clearly,” she added.
***Insists On Competence, Federal Character, Other Considerations In Selection Of Principal Officials
Legislators alone should elect the 10th Assembly’s leadership, the legislative interest group of the National Assembly has said.
In addition, they thought that the qualifications, popularity, and federal character of the candidate should all be taken into consideration.
Speaking at the end of the event was the General Council Chair of the G-10 Parliamentary Advocacy Group (G-10 PAP), whose general council meeting was held over the weekend in Abuja.
While pointing out that a free legislative branch was in fact the real bastion of democracy and one of the strongest prerequisites for democracy to flourish, it criticized the Executive’s ongoing interference in the legislative branch’s operations.
In a communique signed by the trio of Sunny Anderson Osiebe, National Coordinator, Fred Itua and Nkem Anyata-Lafia, National Secretary and National Publicity Secretary respectively, which was released to pressmen after a high-powered meeting, the group also noted the following:
“That the two Chambers of the National Assembly must be allowed a space that is completely devoid of any interference by the Executive to elect the next President of the Senate, his Deputy, Speaker of the House of Representatives and his Deputy;
“That the next leaders of the 10th National Assembly must be individuals who understand the complexities of Nigeria and are willing to help in healing the anger and wounds brought about by our fault lines;
“That such next leaders must not be rubber stamps in the hands of anyone. This is, however, not advocating for an antagonist National Assembly, but the fact remains that Nigerians deserve a National Assembly that will stand on the side of the people whenever the need arises;
“That the selection of the next leaders of the National Assembly must reflect the Federal Character principle and the nation’s diversity. Every part of Nigeria must be carried along in the truest demonstration of our national diversity;
“That the next leaders of the National Assembly must be willing to subject requests from the Executive to critical scrutiny, reviews and collective decision. This is to avoid a situation where decisions, like the constant quests for loans, which have since become a daily routine of the present Administration and which have a direct impact on the nation at large, are left for a few lawmakers to decide.”
The group, which also called on lawmakers to take a dispassionate look at the nation’s electoral system and processes for the selection of the leaders by INEC, said it was sad to note that the 2023 General Elections fell far short of expectations and have, actually, initiated an ugly return to the dark days of tension and anxiety, which characterized such polls in our distant past when the reverse ought to have been the case.
The group, however, thanked all Nigerians for the maturity they exhibited before, during and after the Federal elections, while calling on all to ensure that the remaining polls are characterized by such disposition.
Bola Tinubu, the winner of last Saturday’s presidential election, has received congratulations from Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, managing director/CEO of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC).In a message of congratulations sent on Wednesday, Maduekwe stated that Tinubu’s victory is evidence of fresh optimism for a better, more secure, and wealthy Nigeria. The NFC president asserts that Tinubu’s election as president under the APC’s slogan of “renewed optimism” will open up wonderful opportunities for the country’s creative sector, particularly the film industry, to contribute more significantly to the national economy. He ,therefore, called on all citizens to welcome the president-elect with renewed optimism and support as the next dispensation ushers in better days for Nigeria. The letter reads: “On behalf of myself and the Nigerian Film Corporation, I congratulate the President-elect, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu,on his resounding victory in Saturday’s Presidential Election, despite all odds.“This is not just a victory for our great party, the All Progressives Party(APC) , but a victory for Nigerians and lovers of democracy across the world.”“The NFC, which is committed to development of a viable and sustainable film industry and cinema culture in Nigeria, will sure deliver more on its mandate under this administration.” The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Tinubu winner of the 2023 presidential election.Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku came second with 6,984,520 votes, and the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi emerged third with 6,101,533 votes.
The federal government has given the newly management board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) eight weeks to fish out staff of the fund with fake academic credentials and National Youth Service Corps Certificate.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, gave the order in Abuja, at the inauguration of the board. He said the decision is in a bid to ascertain the authenticity of the staff certificates and also to redeem the image of the commission following certificate forgery of the immediate Managing Director of the fund.
Ngige also charged the new board to ensure the full implementation of the NSITF Restructuring Report and conclusion of Electronic NSITF (E-NSITF) Phases I and II, to enable maximum collection of contributions from public and private sectors, as well as move into the informal sector of the economy.
The Minister called for the intensification of operational drive in the public sector, which is within the dimension of the formal economy, to ensure that national and sub-national governments (states) move towards universal coverage to all the workers in Nigeria.
He mandated the new board to do their possible best to build a new NSITF, noted for accountability, transparency and other principles characteristic of good governance.
Ngige expressed optimism that with the new board, the era of the media feasting on NSITF activities was over.
Ngige said, “Within the next eight weeks, you have to screen NYSC and academic certificates of all staff of the Fund. I have cause to say so. When I see letters written by staff, including people in management positions, I start wondering if they obtained General Certificate of Education (GCE).
“You should screen out impostors with fake educational and NYSC certificates.”
In his response, the new Chairman of the Board, Mr. Emmanuel Nwosu, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for giving them the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the country.
Nwosu said he recognised the essence of NSITF to cater for various aspects of social security, including protection of the world of work.
He said that he and his team would ensure that those with forged academic credentials are not only weeded out, but would ensure that the fund is given a positive identity.
On her part, the new Managing Director of the fund, Mrs Maureen Allagoa, said she would do everything possible to ensure that there is accountability in the fund which has been reportedly lacking in the past.
It could be recalled that, the immediate boss of NSITF, Michael Akabogu was recently sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari, following a certificate forgery saga.
Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC), has characterized Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK) as a devoted supporter of the party’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) presidential candidate.
In response to a claim made by Dr. Josef Onoh, the South East spokesman for the Bola Tinubu presidential campaign council, that Sen. Kalu “is disingenuous in his afterthought support for the Tinubu presidency,” Maduekwe made this statement in a discussion with newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
Onoh, in the report, alleged that Kanu’s choice for the 2023 elections was for a person from the northeast to become the president of Nigeria, an allegation that has been widely condemned by APC supporters in the South East, as well as political associates of OUK across the country.
According to Maduekwe, the statement by Onoh is baseless and far from the truth, as the Senator representing Abia North has always expressed his convincing support for Tinubu presidential ambition both within and outside the state and was committed to delivering his senatorial zone for APC .
He expressed dismay that such a divisive statement was coming from a critical stakeholder just few days to the presidential polls that party members were supposed to join hands towards delivering Abia State and the region for Bola Tinubu.
According to him ,” Orji Uzor Kalu has never hid his love and affiliation for the party and Asiwaju. Infact, he is one of the very Igbo leaders standing for the party since he joined it. Such statement does not portray him rightly.
“This is totally wrong and uncalled for. The truth is that OUK has majorly laid the foundation for BAT to get his substantial vote from his senatorial district. Coming at this hour to lampoon him in the media space is not any measure of intelligence.
“ At all political campaigns in Abia north, OUK always makes it mandatory for him to be elected that voters must vote the broom three times-President, Senate and House of Reps.
“This strategy is being driven by the massive infrastructure development he brought to Abia North within the past three and a half years. No senator living or dead attracted such a humongous impact on the area. These achievements are being used to campaign for BAT as an APC-inspired development.
Maduekwe lamented that this attack on the party stalwarts from the region by Onoh is becoming one too many, as he had earlier threw similar jab at the DG of Voice of Nigeria(VON), Dr Osita Okechukwu, who also halls from the region.
“Whatever the interest he is pursuing, Onoh should understand that a house that wants to remain standing must not be divided against itself, and he cannot become a minister by fighting party stalwarts from the south- east.
“It is so sad that within few days to the election such an unnecessary rmarks is being published to rob off the enthusiasm we are building up here.
“Election is a game of number, and you cannot create disaffection between key leaders and our people by painting them in bad light if you are truly serious with us having that number.
“As the campaign is coming to a close today , I think our collective focus should be on how Abia State can make the party deliver the mandatory 25% votes in at least 24 of the 36 states.
The NFC helmsman therefore urged party members from the region , especially those from Abia North senatorial district to remain resolute, united and focused in order to secure victory at the polls for the party.
Following allegations of the imposition of the Salka village head and violations of important human rights by the Emir of Kontagora, Alhaji Muhammad Barau, the Police Area Commander, and Associates, the Ollopu Youth Association of Salka in the Magama Local Government Area of Niger State has expressed concern about the current situation in Salka town.
The King Makers and Women Representatives in Salka were invited to Kontagora by the Emir, Alhaji Muhammad Barau, through the District Head of Salka, Alhaji Shehu Bawan Dodo, on February 2nd, 2023. The Emir informed them that after careful consideration and consultation with the people of Kontagora, they had decided to return the troubled Village Head to the village.
He , however, added that responding, the Adide of Salka, one of the highly respected kingmakers informed the Emir that the Kingmakers of Salka were not consulted, insisting that the people of Salka have resolved not to have the embattled village head back on throne.
His words: “On hearing this, the palace guards (Dogarai) descended on him with horse whip (koboko) lashes and beating until one of the women representative stood up and held the King maker, in order to shield him, and was also hit by the koboko.
“It was at that point that the Emir ordered them to stop the beating. They inflicted physical injury on him and was thereafter taken to the Police area Command Office Kontagora like a Common criminal not even allowing him to wear his shoe.
“He and his colleagues were detained in the police area command office from morning till late evening without food and were later released. All these happened under the watch of the Police Area Commander, Alhaji Gawuna and Divisional Police Officer, Magama Local Government Mallam who were supposed to be representatives of the Inspector General of Police and the Chief Law Officer of the Federation”, he stressed.
He further hinted that: “This is a flagrant abuse of office and an infringement on the rights of Adide of Salka, as he is constitutionally allowed to express himself.
“For Avoidance of doubt, the embattled Village Head of Salka ran out of Salka on 17th October, 2022 as a result of a protest by the people of Salka against abuse of office, misrule, maladministration and lack of respect for human dignity exhibited by him. This was followed by a letter of appeal to the Emir for his immediate removal as the village head dated 21st October, 2022 but no action was taken.
“For allegations bordering on security to be made against the village head and no action is taken at all by either the Emir and/or the Police raise more questions than answers. And the Kingmakers of Salka deserve respect like any other king maker in Nigeria and must be treated as such.
“With all due respect, they are the rightful institution to choose a village head for Salka town. This is in consonance with Section 3(2) of the Appointment and Deposition of Chiefs Act of Niger State, 1989( as amended). He further alleged that the kingmakers and the women were under duress, asked to sign documents which content they did not know since they could not read in English but the police kept telling them that if anything happens in Salka, they will be held responsible.
“The Niger State Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police are kindly invited to take note, as the actions of the Emir and his cohorts to our King makers are unacceptable and condemnable.
“We therefore plead with the media, Human Rights Organizations and the Nigerian Government to call them to order and keep watch on their actions”. We are firm believers in the tenets of democracy which allows for freedom of choice by the people and rule of law.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will receive two million five hundred thousand (2,500,000) votes, the National Leader of Atiku 100%, Mr. Musa Mantu has said.
While adding that, in 2019 general elections, with their hand earned resources they were able to deliver over 700,000 votes for Atiku Abubakar.
He gave this hint to the ATIKU 100% National Youth Conference scheduled for today the 22nd day of February 2023 in Abuja with the Theme: “Grassroots Mobilization OF Two Million Five Hundred Thousand (2,500,000) Votes For His Excellency Atiku Abubakar”.
According to him: ” The mission was simply to Think Nigeria First; Do Nigeria First; And act Nigeria First So Whatever we do today tomorrow and in the future it should be all about protecting the integrity and interest of Nigeria and Nigerians First
“Atiku Abubakar will not only bring stability and prosperity but will also bring sustainable growth so we can usher in the fabrication of a new generation of political, business and economic leaders, manufacture opportunities, build new enterprises, provide social Infrastructures, mentor new entrepreneurs and strengthen the small and medium scale enterprises which is the bedrock of any serious and successful country.
“These are some of the key factors and reasons why ATIKU and okowa need to be voted into power NOW.
“It is too late to fail, the success of Nigerians is non negotiable, the Nigerian Dream must be realized, whether is a kid from Zamfara, Anambra or a kid from Oyo, that kid has a right to a decent life and an opportunity to actualize his or her dreams.
“We have suffered way too much, this issue of Japa is way too popular at the moment, the exportation and exploitation of our vibrant professionals and talents abroad is killing us softly, be it doctors, engineers, skilled and unskilled laborers, journalists, educators Enough is Enough
“We do not have any other country that we can call our own, the social deprivation, the economic starvation, the insecurity and lack of unity Haba, enough is enough.
“This is a clarion call to the all the youths, the largest voting constituency in Nigeria today and the good People of Nigeria to vote for ATIKU ABUBAKAR GCON as President to recover Nigeria, the only Unifier, the rescuer, the liberator, the nationalist and the most detribalized and most experienced candidate who knows the way, can relate and can enter all 36 states, 774 LGA’s, over 9,400 wards, 177,000 polling units in this country and he will be accepted, largely acknowledged and probably has touched a life or two there regardless of tribe, religion, creed or ethnicity.
“The mantra for an effective and inclusive government led by H.E ATIKU and Governor IFEANYI Okowa will be decided on Saturday 25th February”, he stressed.
Mantu further stated that:” “Before the emancipation back into Democratic Dispensation in 1999, A lot of young people were yet unborn or did not know the struggle, lives lost and sacrifices some of us made to bring about this democracy we are enjoying today. The 1999 elections that gave birth to uninterrupted peaceful Transition from democracy to democracy is one thing we cannot afford to toy with today with Nigeria taking the lead as the longest serving democracy in African History. Recall that it was During the time of OBASANJO AND ATIKU who today are classified as heroes of democracy among others that ratified, secured and cemented uninterrupted Democracy, rule of law and put an end to military rule in Nigeria after so many years.
“From 1999 to 2007. His Excellency ATIKU ABUBAKAR was constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of Heading the Economy by virtue of his office as the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“It was then that the Restoration of Economic Hope and Prosperity began, The Banking Revolution that gave the Nigerian Financial system international ratings and credibility occurred, The Digital Revolution which brought about seamless transition from analog to digital networks, mobile phones and devices as well as the subsequent introduction and accessibility to Internet connectivity in Nigeria.
“Similarly, It was during his time that EFCC, ICPC and other anti graft and corruption agencies were established and entrenched into the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Furthermore, during his time in office, the National Stadium you see today in abuja was built, this initiative put Nigeria on the global map by hosting multiple international sporting activities, tournaments and games thereby creating unity and oneness through sports.”
“I cannot stand here and list all the achievements of his Government so this is just to mention a few however, among all these strides, let us not forget that ATIKU was also a very successful business man, an entrepreneur per excellence who actually was one of the highest employer of laborers in not only Nigeria but in Africa at one time with over 8,000 workers competing with likes of even Alhaji Aliko Dangote who is the Richest and Wealthiest Man in Africa today.
“This demonstrates what a good team player and friend of the corporate private sector he is.
“A man who understands the meaning of tax breaks and incentives that will give advantage to businesses, open and create the conducive environment for local and foreign direct investments to stream into the economy, thereby boosting Nigerian Business portfolios internationally, which will then create massive wealth, jobs and employment for millions of Nigerians.
He further stated that:”The growth and development that Nigeria Needs at this time cannot be over emphasized, Nigeria must take its rightful place among the committee of nations globally and cement its position as the most powerful black nation in the world, we are the land of milk and honey, we are blessed with human and natural resources, beautiful land and people and the most diverse culture in Africa hence we have no business whatsoever with poverty and hunger.
“ATIKU 100% support group is one of the largest and biggest support group today in the Political architecture of Nigeria. In 2017 a group of Patriotic men and women, who believe in this nation, nationally and internationally, cutting across all walks of life saw the vision of a better Nigeria, we came together organized ourselves and established the ATIKU 100% Movement.
“Please and please lets not mortgage our future into the wrong hands, as we go, we want all zonal and state youth leaders to take the message to the Local Governments youth leaders and the LGA youth leaders to preach the gospel of ATIKU to the various wards and ward youth leaders to take the message of 15 voters per polling unit on Election Day so we can deliver 2,700,000 confirmed votes for our incoming President Gods willing come Monday February 27th 2023.

Ondo State , Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and Ebonyi state topped Nigeria Basic Education Ranking for 2022.
While Gombe, Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara states scored zero percent.
This was revealed at the Basic Education Performance Ranking presentation organized by Youthhub Africa, in collaboration with Christian aid in Abuja.
According to the report the best performing 11 states are Ondo (98%), FCT(96%), Ebonyi (90%), Rivers (85%), Imo (80%), Anambra (79%), Enugu (77%), Ekiti (77%), Bayelsa (75%), Delta (75%), and Lagos (75%).
Gombe, Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara did not score any points.
This means that the three states did not meet any minimum basic education recommendations and a majority of their learners neither have foundational literacy nor numeracy skills required to function in a society. Overall, a significant number of states are failing to provide quality education.
In his opening remarks the Executive Director of Youthhub Africa, Rotimi Olawale, said “Education financing should be more specific on how the states allocate, disburse and utilize funds to improve education quality.
Transparency in budgetary process means states are held more accountable. And also develop programming based on investments in education financing, teacher certification, learning outcomes and infrastructure.
Stakeholders who spoke at a public presentation and launch of the basic education performance ranking included Managing Partner, Strategy – MalalaFund, Femi Aderibigbe, Program Coordinator, Stand with a girl initiative, SWAG, Mercy Bolaji, Joshua Arogunro, program Manager, Almajiri Child Rights Initiative, among others.
They all said it is imperative for Nigeria Government to increase funding of basic education and ensure that the funds are used for what is meant for.
Mercy Bolaji, lamented the over 20 million out of school children in Nigeria.
Joshua who decried the unavailability of proper data in Nigeria, especially in education sector.
And inssacent attacks on Nigeria’s schools by bandits and unknown gunmen all contributed to the over 20 million of out of school children in Nigeria.
The Africa Leadership Group (ALG) has urged Nigerians to vote wisely without giving in to intimidation or harassment by anyone, group or party.
Chairman and Founder of the Group, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo gave the charge during a Pre-election Conference held in Lagos.
Pastor Ighodalo said ”Nigeria cannot afford to get it wrong this time, we must intentionally and carefully select leaders fit for purpose at this time who can lead us out of this national crisis”.
“The person’s vision and what they want to achieve with Nigeria and where they are taking Nigeria especially in terms of economic development and social welfare availability for the average Nigerian is there. Do we want somebody that makes sure that all Nigerians are educated, do we want somebody who will make sure that all Nigerians are employed and employable, who want to make sure that there is infrastructure across the length and breadth of Nigeria.” He added
The clergy charged Nigerians to shun violence but rather evaluate political candidates and vote the in this year’s general elections, adding that Nigeria needs a Nationalist as well as one who is mentally competent, sacrificial, accessible, humble, honest, educated and team player as President.
“The person must first be a Nigerian, before you say Fulani, Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, you first of all have to be a Nigerian, what has happened so far is that most people are first of all from their tribe before they now say okay that we are Nigerian, so what it is, is that their tribal sentiments, their family sentiments is much more important to them than the overall thinking of Nigeria, and that where they have the problem”
While speaking on the goals of the Africa Leadership Group (ALG) in Nigeria and Africa, Pastor Ighodalo said Group ”is committed to ensuring that your lawful votes count. We will collaborate with other credible organisations and volunteers to ensure that the integrity of free and fair elections by observing polling stations to verify that lawfully registered voters can vote in an environment that is fair and free from coercion, Intimidation or violence and that results announced reflect the vote counts.”
On his part, the Group’s Executive Secretary and Program Director, Olu-Victor Oyinloye charged Nigerians to go out on the election and vote massively for the leader of their choice”Every citizen determines the kind of leaders they get, we all have our role to play vote, ensure that your vote counts and make sure that everything that happens at your polling unit is well documented, because all these things will be revisited again and again.” He added
