Canada has commended the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) for the successful organisation of its diaspora conference in Canada, describing the initiative as a positive step towards strengthening cooperation and engagement between Nigeria and Canada.
Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Carlos Rojas-Arbulú, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Lagos.
Rojas-Arbulú praised NiDCOM and the 15-member NiDEC Planning Committee for organising what he described as a highly impactful conference, saying the event created an important platform for greater cooperation between the two countries.
The Canadian envoy said the conference and its outcomes represented a positive development in Nigeria-Canada relations.
The three-day conference, held across three cities in Canada, brought together senior government officials from Nigeria and Canada, diaspora professionals, investors and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for increased cooperation and development.
Responding to the commendation, Dabiri-Erewa expressed appreciation for the feedback and thanked the Canadian authorities for their support and partnership.
She said the recognition confirmed that the conference had achieved its intended purpose and assured that NiDCOM would work with relevant stakeholders to build on the outcome.
Dabiri-Erewa said the Commission would continue to strengthen its engagement with Nigerians living abroad while creating more opportunities for collaboration, investment and national development.
She also expressed optimism that the partnership between Nigeria and Canada would continue to grow to the benefit of both countries.
The conference comes as Nigeria continues to seek stronger economic and development links with its diaspora community, particularly in areas involving investment, professional expertise and international partnerships.
For NiDCOM, increased engagement with Nigerians abroad provides an avenue to connect diaspora professionals and investors with opportunities that can contribute to Nigeria’s development.
The Commission said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to consolidate the gains of the Canadian conference and deepen engagement with the Nigerian diaspora.
