Drama In Ekiti Polls As Vote-Buying Claims Rock Election, EFCC Operatives Chased Away

Fresh controversy trailed Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election following widespread allegations of vote-buying at several polling units, with voters reportedly receiving between ₦2,000 and ₦10,000 from suspected political party agents.

The allegations sparked tension in parts of the state as viral videos circulating on social media showed individuals allegedly distributing cash to voters before and after they cast their ballots.

The videos, which attracted widespread reactions online, captured scenes of large crowds gathered around polling centres where the alleged inducements were said to have taken place.

The situation reportedly took a dramatic turn when operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) moved to arrest suspected vote buyers at some polling units.

Eyewitnesses said the anti-graft officials met stiff resistance from members of the crowd who booed and confronted them, forcing the EFCC team to retreat from the area.

The development heightened concerns over the persistence of vote-buying in Nigeria’s electoral process despite repeated warnings by electoral authorities, security agencies and civil society groups.

Election observers expressed worry that the continued monetisation of voting could undermine the credibility of elections and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

“Despite repeated sensitisation on the evils of vote merchandising and its damage to the democratic process, the end to the menace still seems far away,” one election observer lamented.

Another observer described vote-buying as one of the greatest threats to free and fair elections in the country.

“Vote-buying remains one of the biggest threats to credible elections in Nigeria, and it continues to weaken voter independence,” the observer said.

Political analysts warned that the practice not only compromises the integrity of elections but also encourages a culture where governance becomes tied to financial inducement rather than accountability and performance.

Meanwhile, election observer groups and media organisations monitoring the governorship poll are expected to release comprehensive reports on the conduct of the election in the coming days.

The reports are expected to provide a clearer assessment of the allegations and the overall credibility of the electoral process across the state.

As collation of results continues, attention remains focused on whether electoral and security agencies will investigate the allegations and take action against those found culpable.
