Brave Nigerian Cyclist Pedals 10,000km From London To Lagos To Wipe Out Polio

A Nigerian adventurer and humanitarian, Captain Olatunji Emmanuel Okedeyi, has embarked on a daring 10,000-kilometre cycling expedition from London, United Kingdom, to Lagos, Nigeria, in a bold effort to raise awareness and funds for the global eradication of polio.

Okedeyi, who set off seven days ago, is currently riding through Morocco and heading towards the Mauritanian border as he continues the gruelling cross-continental journey.

The determined cyclist has already conquered several major cities across Europe and North Africa, including Paris in France, San Sebastián in Spain, Madrid, Malaga, Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir, Laayoun and Dakhla.

His campaign, tagged “London to Lagos: Two Wheels, One Mission to End Polio,” is attracting attention from supporters, health advocates and philanthropists across different countries.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the mission, Okedeyi said his upbringing in a family of healthcare professionals motivated him to contribute to the fight against preventable diseases.

According to him, access to healthcare remains a fundamental human right, while polio is one of the few diseases the world has the opportunity to eliminate completely.

“Growing up in a home where healthcare was a way of life taught me that prevention is the ultimate cure. Polio remains one of the diseases the world has the power to eradicate completely, and I want to contribute to that mission,” he said.

To boost fundraising efforts, the cyclist launched the “Kilometre Club,” an initiative encouraging individuals, organisations and philanthropists to sponsor portions of the journey.

One of the prominent supporters of the campaign is Prince Yinka Afonja, Chief Executive Officer of Ace Mall, who is backing the humanitarian project aimed at supporting global polio eradication efforts.

Under the initiative, every £10 donated sponsors one kilometre of the London-to-Lagos route.

Funds generated from the campaign will be used to support vaccination programmes, strengthen cold-chain systems required for vaccine preservation and provide rehabilitation services, including mobility aids and physiotherapy for people affected by polio.

Okedeyi disclosed that the expedition will take him through multiple countries, exposing him to difficult terrains, harsh weather conditions and numerous logistical challenges.

Despite the hurdles ahead, he expressed confidence that the support of sponsors, donors and well-wishers would keep him moving until he reaches Nigeria.

The cyclist described the journey as more than a sporting challenge, saying it also symbolises a bridge between his life in the United Kingdom and his Nigerian roots.

He added that the ride serves as a reminder that the gains recorded in the fight against polio must be sustained and protected.

Nigeria achieved a major public health milestone in 2020 when it was officially declared free of wild poliovirus, a feat celebrated across Africa and beyond.

However, health experts continue to stress the need for sustained immunisation campaigns to prevent any resurgence of the disease.

As he pedals steadily towards West Africa, Okedeyi hopes his journey will inspire governments, corporate organisations, philanthropists and ordinary citizens to join the global effort to consign polio to history.

The campaign is being promoted under the hashtags #EmmaRidesForZeroPolio, #EndPolio, #LivingForTheSakeOfOthers and #ServiceAboveSelf.
