The Nigerian government has congratulated Indonesia on the occasion of its 81st Independence Anniversary, celebrated on 17 August 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja..the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended warm felicitations to the Government and people of Indonesia.

“Nigeria joins the Indonesian people in commemorating the proclamation of their independence on 17 August 1945, and celebrating Indonesia’s journey of nation-building, resilience, economic transformation and national development,” the statement said.
The Ministry described Nigeria-Indonesia relations as cordial and longstanding, founded on mutual respect, shared interests and a commitment to peaceful coexistence, multilateralism and international cooperation.
Nigeria recognises Indonesia as an important partner in Southeast Asia and values its constructive role in regional and global affairs, particularly its advocacy for dialogue, peace and cooperation.
The Federal Government highlighted significant potential to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, digital technology, education, healthcare and maritime affairs. It also stressed the importance of stronger private-sector engagement to drive investment, technology transfer and economic growth for both nations.
As prominent members of the Global South, Nigeria and Indonesia share common interests in advancing sustainable development, strengthening food and energy security, addressing climate change and promoting a more equitable international order.
The statement further noted the value of increased people-to-people exchanges through education, culture, tourism, sports, youth development and professional programmes to enhance mutual understanding.
Nigeria reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with Indonesia to expand areas of cooperation and strengthen collaboration on regional and global issues of shared interest.
