The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has arrested two suspected drug dealers in Benin City and recovered large quantities of illicit substances in a fresh crackdown on drug trafficking in the state.
The suspects, identified as Efosa Uyi and Stella Thompson, were apprehended at different locations within the state capital.
Announcing the arrests on Sunday, the Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Festus Ebea, said the operation underscores the determination of the Edo State Government to rid the state of drug-related crimes and criminal activities.
According to him, substances recovered from the suspects included Indian hemp, crystal methamphetamine popularly known as “Ice,” Colorado (Colos), Canadian Loud and Scottish Loud.
Ebea said the drugs were seized in large quantities during the operation.
The commissioner warned drug traffickers, peddlers and addicts to stay away from Edo State, stressing that the government would not allow the state to become a safe haven for illicit drug activities.
“We have arrested two suspects at different points in Benin and they will be handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution,” he said.
“We are working closely with the drug agency to rid the state of those involved in drug-related activities. We are not relenting in combing the state and getting drug addicts and dealers off our streets.”
He disclosed that the suspects were arrested on Friday, May 29, 2026, and assured that the state government would ensure the matter is diligently prosecuted.
“This is a strong warning to those selling and distributing illicit drugs. Edo State will not be safe for their operations,” he added.
Ebea also appealed to young people to avoid drug abuse, warning that narcotics and other dangerous substances destroy lives and often push users into crime.
“We call on our youths to stay off drugs. Drug abuse has no positive impact on anyone’s life. Instead, it destroys futures and leaves victims degraded in society,” he said.
“To save our youths from these dangerous substances, we must continue to arrest those selling and distributing them. That is why these suspects have been apprehended and presented before the media.”
The commissioner further urged journalists and members of the public to monitor the case and ensure justice is served, saying successful prosecution would serve as a deterrent to others involved in the illicit drug trade.
He maintained that many criminal activities are linked to drug abuse, noting that offenders often rely on drugs before carrying out unlawful acts.
“Our youths should stay away from drugs because they offer no benefits. Most criminal activities are connected to drug abuse. Criminals use drugs to embolden themselves before carrying out their nefarious activities,” Ebea stated.
The suspects are expected to be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
