The President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has reaffirmed Guinea’s strategic importance to West African stability and regional integration during talks with the country’s diplomatic representative in Nigeria.
Diop made the remarks when he received Guinea’s Chargé d’Affaires in Nigeria, Abdoulaye Touré, at the new headquarters of the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja on October 7, 2026.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the regional bloc and Guinea in democracy, peace and security, good governance and regional integration, according to an ECOWAS statement.
Touré congratulated Diop on his appointment as ECOWAS Commission president, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter in efforts to deepen regional integration across West Africa.
He stressed the need to bring ECOWAS closer to citizens by strengthening public trust and solidarity while pursuing practical results that promote good governance and improve living conditions across the region.
In response, Diop congratulated the government and people of Guinea on the country’s recent political transition and elections.
He also commended the address delivered by Guinea’s president at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, acknowledging the country’s historic contributions to West Africa and its longstanding pan-African role.
The ECOWAS Commission president highlighted Guinea’s strategic importance as a member state, pointing to its considerable natural-resource potential and capacity to contribute to stronger economic cooperation and regional integration.
The discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment of ECOWAS and Guinea to promoting peace, stability, good governance and sustainable regional integration.
The engagement comes as the regional bloc continues to pursue cooperation among West African countries on political stability, democratic governance and economic development.
