The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a TikTok user, Udoma David Ekeh, for allegedly spreading false claims about the agency and engaging in online fraud.
The suspect had, in December 2025, alleged on social media that operatives of the Commission’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate were kidnapped by bandits while on assignment in Kwara State, claiming that a huge ransom was demanded for their release.
But the EFCC, in a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, dismissed the claims as entirely false and misleading.
According to the Commission, the suspect used his TikTok platform to spread fabricated information capable of inciting the public and undermining its anti-corruption efforts.
“All his claims are fabricated, together with the use of his TikTok account to incite and misinform the public about the Commission’s relentless efforts in tackling internet fraud,” the statement said.
Further investigations by the agency reportedly uncovered the suspect’s involvement in a romance scam, where he allegedly impersonated a foreigner identified as “Garg Carta” on Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The EFCC said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
