Esama @ 92: Priest Celebrates Igbinedion’s Humility, Philanthropy

As Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, celebrates his 92nd birthday, tributes have continued to pour in for the elder statesman, philanthropist and business icon.

Joining the well-wishers, a Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Andrew Obinyan, described Igbinedion as a living legend whose humility, generosity and contributions to humanity would continue to inspire generations.

In a birthday tribute, Obinyan said the Esama’s 92 years had been marked by vision, resilience, service, philanthropy and an unwavering commitment to humanity.

The cleric described Igbinedion as a rare personality who had successfully remained influential and relevant across four generations, earning the respect and affection of people across different age groups.

According to him, the Esama’s enduring relevance was a reflection of his character, contributions to society and lifelong commitment to improving the lives of others.

“God has bestowed upon you an uncommon crown of glory, honour and distinction,” Obinyan said, describing Igbinedion’s life as a testament to greatness rooted in service and humanity.

The priest also praised the Esama for his accessibility, noting that despite his status and influence, he had continued to make himself available to people from different walks of life.

“Where others erect walls of protocol, you have opened doors,” he said.

Obinyan added that Igbinedion’s open-door approach had helped him build strong relationships with successive generations.

He also commended the Esama for maintaining humility despite his wealth, influence and social standing.

According to him, Igbinedion had remained connected to ordinary people and had consistently made those around him feel valued and respected.

“Your life reminds us that true greatness is not measured by how far one rises above others, but by how closely one remains connected to them,” he said.

Obinyan identified the combination of humility and generosity as one of the major qualities that had sustained the Esama’s influence and public goodwill.

He said Igbinedion’s greatest legacy could not be measured only by physical structures, institutions or material achievements, but also by the lives touched through his philanthropy.

“Your legacy, therefore, is not merely contained in monuments, institutions, or material accomplishments. It is inscribed in the lives you have touched, the opportunities you have created, and the generations you have inspired,” the cleric said.

Obinyan noted that Igbinedion’s philanthropic interventions had created opportunities, supported communities and offered hope to many people.

He expressed confidence that the Esama’s contributions would continue to resonate beyond his generation.

“History will remember you. Future generations will study your journey,” he said.

The priest described it as a privilege to belong to a generation that had witnessed Igbinedion’s journey and benefited from his vision, wisdom, benevolence and humanity.

He prayed for God to preserve the Esama in sound health, grant him peace of mind and renew his strength.

Obinyan also prayed for greater joy, fulfilment and abundant grace for the Benin business icon as he advances into another year.
