Wike: I’ll Quit as Minister If Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign his position if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the FCT and Rivers State.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while addressing members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, saying his ability to secure electoral support for the President in the two areas would determine whether he remained in office.

The minister said he would announce his resignation if Tinubu failed to win the FCT and Rivers State.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.

“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has listed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Wike also disclosed plans to mobilise a multi-party coalition in the FCT ahead of the elections, saying the arrangement would support candidates from different political parties for various elective positions while backing Tinubu for president.

He named former FCT Senator, Philip Aduda, as the candidate being supported for the Senate, as well as two House of Representatives candidates whom he described as former area council chairmen.

“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people,” Wike said.

He added: “In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results.”

The minister said his political responsibility as FCT Minister required demonstrable results, stressing that he would not remain in office if he failed to deliver the territory politically.

“If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation,” he said.

The declaration came amid ongoing issues surrounding the relocation of mechanics and traders and land allocation around the Apo Mechanic Village corridor, with the FCT Administration engaging stakeholders on the matter.
