FCT-IRS Goes Digital, Launches Taxporta to Ease Tax Payment, Filing

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has unveiled Taxporta, a fully digital tax management platform that allows taxpayers to register, file returns, pay taxes and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates online, in a major push to simplify tax compliance under Nigeria’s new tax regime.

The platform was launched at a stakeholders’ engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Abuja, where the Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Michael Ango, described it as a game changer in the agency’s drive to modernise tax administration and improve voluntary compliance.

Ango said taxpayers can now complete virtually all tax-related transactions from anywhere without visiting FCT-IRS offices.

“Taxporta is a self-service platform where taxpayers can register, file returns, calculate tax liabilities, make payments, generate receipts and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates without third-party assistance,” he said.

He explained that the platform has been configured to align with the provisions of the 2025 Tax Reform Acts, automatically applying statutory reliefs and allowances once taxpayers provide their income details.

According to him, the system calculates tax liabilities, processes payments and issues Tax Clearance Certificates seamlessly.

The FCT-IRS boss expressed confidence that the innovation would boost internally generated revenue and improve tax compliance across the Federal Capital Territory.

“Our objective is to maximise tax collection. If our target is ₦400 billion or ₦500 billion and we eventually generate ₦600 billion, that will be a welcome development,” Ango said.

He, however, stressed that the Service would continue to prioritise voluntary compliance over sanctions.

“The law provides for penalties, but our first approach is voluntary compliance. Where taxpayers have genuine reasons for delay, we are willing to grant extensions. Penalties become necessary only where there is deliberate refusal to comply,” he stated.

Ango said the engagement with MDAs was organised to educate stakeholders on the implementation of the new tax laws, gather feedback and ensure a smooth migration from the previous tax platform while eliminating multiple taxation.

He noted that internally generated revenue remains the lifeblood of the FCT, explaining that the territory receives only one per cent of the Federal Government’s allocation from the Federation Account.

“The bulk of resources available for infrastructure and development projects comes from internally generated revenue,” he added.

Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, Henry Nwauna, described the engagement as a strategic step towards strengthening collaboration between government institutions and tax authorities.

“It reflects government’s commitment to improving compliance and promoting sustainable national development,” he said.

Earlier, Director of Tax Operations (Corporate, MDAs and International Organisations), Salome Adeyemi, urged stakeholders to embrace the Taxporta platform to simplify tax registration, filing, payment and issuance of Tax Clearance Certificates.

Also speaking, Tax Controller, MDA Tax Office, Fatima Abubakar, sensitised participants on the provisions of the Nigerian Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025 and other new tax laws.

She said every taxable individual, business and government institution must obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), adding that tax authorities now have powers to automatically generate TINs using the National Identification Number (NIN).

Abubakar warned that taxable income now includes salaries, allowances and other benefits enjoyed by employees.

“All benefits, whether in cash or kind, are taxable because they constitute perks of office. Failure to file complete tax returns attracts a fine of ₦100,000 in the first month and ₦50,000 for every subsequent month of default,” she said.

She further cautioned that MDAs must demand valid Tax Clearance Certificates from contractors before awarding contracts or risk a penalty of ₦5 million.

A Tax Manager at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Mohammed Ali, commended the initiative, saying it would strengthen transparency and boost stakeholders’ confidence in the tax administration process.

The Director of ICT, Ayokanmi Ogunwumiju, also demonstrated the platform’s integrated payment solutions, highlighting its security, efficiency and user-friendly features.

The engagement is part of the FCT-IRS’ broader strategy to deepen stakeholder engagement, improve voluntary compliance and deploy technology to deliver a more transparent, efficient and taxpayer-friendly tax system.
