FG Declares Friday Public Holiday For Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

The minister described June 12 as a historic date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, saying it symbolises the courage, sacrifices and resilience of Nigerians who fought for the nation’s democratic freedom.

According to him, the contributions of pro-democracy heroes continue to shape the country’s governance and strengthen the foundations of democracy.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country. Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the statement said.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to protecting democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

He stressed that the Federal Government remains determined to uphold these values in order to deepen democracy and promote national development.

The minister also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, working with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.

He noted that peace and security remain essential ingredients for a thriving democracy and sustainable national growth.

Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to use the Democracy Day holiday for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and to recommit themselves to national unity, responsible citizenship and lawful conduct.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola and the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
