The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against the dangers of illegal migration through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, following harrowing accounts from a survivor of the journey.
The warning was contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja on August 1, 2026, after receiving Mr. George Emmanuel, a Nigerian who survived the deadly route.
Emmanuel recounted his experience crossing the Sahara Desert and a boat mishap in the Mediterranean Sea, where 28 people died after the vessel capsized.
“The Nigerian people must be aware of the grave risks associated with these irregular routes,” the ministry said, highlighting the human cost of illegal migration.
The government expressed concern over continued loss of lives and the exploitation of migrants by traffickers and smugglers, as well as exposure to harsh desert conditions, detention and abuse in transit countries.
The ministry commended Emmanuel for turning his experience into advocacy, warning others against embarking on similar journeys through unsafe and illegal routes.
It stated that Nigeria is working to address the root causes of irregular migration by expanding economic opportunities, strengthening border management and intensifying collaboration against human trafficking networks.
The government also reiterated its commitment to promoting safe, orderly and regular migration pathways in partnership with destination and transit countries, as well as international organisations.
It added that Nigerian missions abroad remain active in providing consular assistance, including voluntary return, protection, psychosocial support and reintegration services for distressed citizens.
The ministry urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to exercise caution and avoid falling for false promises associated with irregular migration.
