Heavy Rain Causes Havoc, Enables Escape of 118 Inmates from Niger State Custodial Centre

A heavy downpour on Wednesday night wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, resulting in extensive damage to the facility and the escape of 118 inmates.

According to a statement issued by Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the downpour caused severe damage to the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including a breach in the perimeter fence, which allowed the inmates to flee.

In response to the incident, the NCoS swiftly activated its recapturing protocols and initiated collaboration with other security agencies to recover the escaped inmates. As a result, 10 of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured.

Efforts to recapture the remaining escaped inmates are currently underway, with authorities working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the public.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by custodial facilities during adverse weather conditions and highlights the importance of robust security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
