The widow of late Yoruba film icon, Baba Jimoh Aliu, has expressed deep emotion and gratitude after receiving a rare honour in the Nigerian movie industry, revealing she initially thought the invitation was a scam.
In an emotional account, the veteran actress recounted how actor Saheed Balogun reached out to invite her to a programme, a gesture she found difficult to believe at first.
“When Actor Saheed Balogun called me… I insisted he must call me on video call. I wanted to see his face to be sure it wasn’t 419,” she said.
The actress, who spent over five decades in the Yoruba movie industry alongside her late husband, said the recognition marked the first time she had been honoured in such a manner.
“Ever since I have been in this movie industry for the past 52 years… I have never been honoured this way before,” she stated.
She also reflected on past challenges faced by her family, recalling a period when they were allegedly sidelined within the industry.
According to her, during her late husband’s 80th birthday celebration, only Saheed Balogun showed support from the film community.
The widow further praised Balogun’s continued kindness, noting that he provided accommodation and ensured her comfort during the recent event.
Overwhelmed with emotion, she offered prayers for the actor, wishing him long life, continued favour and blessings for his family.
The touching moment has since gained widespread attention, sparking conversations about the need to recognise and support veteran figures in Nigeria’s film industry.
As of the time of filing this report, Saheed Balogun has not publicly responded to the tribute.
