IGP Leads Unity Walk to Kick Off 2026 Police Day

ABUJA — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday led a symbolic walkathon in Abuja to flag off activities marking the 2026 National Police Day.

The walk, which took off from the Force Headquarters to the Unity Fountain, drew participation from police officers, civil society groups, and members of the public, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening security and community relations.

Speaking at the end of the exercise, Disu emphasised the importance of collaboration between the police and citizens, noting that effective policing cannot be achieved in isolation.

“Security is a collective responsibility. We must work together to build trust and ensure the safety of our communities,” he said.

The walkathon, themed “Together We Walk, Together We Secure,” was aimed at promoting dialogue, fostering unity, and reinforcing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

The IGP also highlighted the importance of physical fitness among officers, urging personnel to adopt healthy lifestyles to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.

Observers noted that the strong turnout of residents alongside police officers signalled growing public engagement and a renewed effort to rebuild confidence in the Force.

The Nigeria Police Force said similar walkathons were held across commands nationwide as part of activities lined up for the 2026 Police Day celebration.

According to the Force, the events are designed to promote wellness among officers and deepen cooperation with the public in tackling crime.

Further activities marking the celebration are expected to focus on community engagement, professionalism, and people-centred policing across the country.
