The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, was reportedly forced to cut short his visit to Benue State yesterday after hundreds of youths blocked his convoy from entering Makurdi, the state capital.
The youths reportedly barricaded the Makurdi-Gboko Road, preventing Obi and his entourage from proceeding into the city.
Obi was said to be on his way to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to visit the community and sympathise with families affected by the armed herders’ attack in the area last year.
However, following the blockade, the former Anambra State governor reportedly returned to the airport and subsequently left the state.
The development occurred amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident, saying it was monitoring the situation and investigating the circumstances surrounding the obstruction of Obi’s movement.
The command said further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
The incident has sparked reactions among political actors, with concerns being raised over the freedom of political candidates to move and conduct legitimate activities across the country.
