Relief came for families of the abducted schoolchildren from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on Tuesday as the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, discharged 31 of the rescued pupils after certifying them medically fit.
However, the hospital retained eight other pupils for further observation and specialised medical care to ensure their full recovery before they are reunited with their families.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital said the decision followed comprehensive medical examinations carried out on all the rescued children.
He disclosed that one of the pupils was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition that had gone unnoticed before the child’s abduction.
According to him, the medical team discovered that the pupil had a hole in the heart during routine evaluation.
“The child has a hole in the heart, which was discovered during our medical evaluation. There is no cause for alarm because the child is stable and responding well.
“We have commenced the necessary medical procedures and will formally notify the Oyo State Government to facilitate the next phase of treatment,” the CMD said.
He explained that the eight pupils would remain under close medical supervision to receive adequate treatment and specialised care until they are fully fit.
The CMD described the discharge of the 31 pupils as a major milestone in the recovery process, assuring that the hospital would continue to monitor the physical and psychological well-being of all the rescued victims as part of their post-rescue rehabilitation.
The pupils were among those rescued after spending weeks in captivity following their abduction from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Oyo State Government had earlier announced that all the rescued pupils and teachers would undergo medical and psychological assessments before being reunited with their families to ensure their proper recovery and reintegration.
