As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged citizens to embrace democratic values, promote national unity, and play active roles in governance.
Director-General of the agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, described June 12 as a powerful symbol of Nigerians’ determination, courage and resilience in the fight for democratic rule and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Deputy Director of Media and Communication, Paul Odenyi, Issa-Onilu said democracy remains the most inclusive system of government, giving citizens the power to choose their leaders and hold them accountable.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes who fought for democracy but also the enduring spirit of Nigerians who continue to defend democratic ideals despite numerous challenges,” he said.
The NOA boss stressed that democracy is more than voting during elections, noting that it requires citizens to respect the rule of law, tolerate opposing views, participate in civic activities and work for the common good.
He warned Nigerians, especially youths, against misinformation, hate speech and political violence, saying such actions threaten national unity and democratic institutions.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting patriotism, civic responsibility and voter education through public enlightenment campaigns and community engagement programmes.
He also hailed the contributions of government institutions, civil society groups, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media and development partners in strengthening democracy and peaceful coexistence across the country.
The NOA chief called on Nigerians to use the June 12 celebration to renew their faith in democracy and join hands in building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
