• Some plead guilty, others remanded, granted bail
• Court orders community service or imprisonment for convicts
The Lagos State Government has arraigned more than 100 suspects before the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, over alleged breaches of public peace and other offences in the Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah areas.
The defendants were also charged with alleged unlawful conversion of government property to personal use and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.
The prosecution, led by Oluwabusola Omotunde on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, told the court that the suspects were arrested between 2am and 4am on Friday, September 4, 2026, across the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah axis.
The charges preferred against them included breach of peace and unlawful conversion of government property to personal use.
During the proceedings, some of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, while others pleaded not guilty.
The Chief Magistrate of the Mobile Court, F.J. Adefioye, stressed the need for deterrence while ensuring that due process was followed.
The court sentenced defendants who pleaded guilty to Counts I and II to one month and two months of community service or imprisonment, respectively.
The sentences are to run consecutively.
However, those who pleaded not guilty were remanded and granted bail, with two sureties required for each defendant.
The Coordinator of the Mobile Court, Olufemi Adekunle, said the state government remained committed to maintaining law and order while protecting legitimate businesses and residents.
He said similar mobile court sittings would continue across Lagos to ensure that alleged offenders were prosecuted promptly and public spaces remained safe.
The Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court handles cases involving public order, environmental, traffic and other offences within its mandate.
The state government said the latest arraignments formed part of ongoing efforts to enforce law and order across the affected areas.
