Minority Caucus Picks Afam Ogene As Spokesman, Vows Stronger Voice On National Issues

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has appointed Hon. Afam Victor Ogene as its new spokesperson, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening its communication with the public and reinforcing its oversight role in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the Leader of the Minority Caucus, Hon. Fredrick Agbedi, following an online meeting of the caucus held on Friday, June 19, 2026.

According to the statement, the decision was reached unanimously by members of the caucus, who expressed confidence in Ogene’s capacity to articulate their positions on national issues and legislative matters.

Hon. Ogene, who currently serves as Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP) Caucus in the House of Representatives and represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, was described as a seasoned legislator with deep understanding of parliamentary practice.

“The Minority Caucus of the 10th House of Representatives is pleased to announce the appointment of Hon. Afam Victor Ogene as Spokesperson of the Caucus. The decision was reached at an online meeting of the Caucus held on Friday, 19th June, 2026,” the statement read.

The caucus noted that Ogene brings to the role extensive legislative experience, strong communication skills and a firm commitment to democratic ideals.

“Hon. Ogene is a ranking legislator and respected parliamentarian who brings to the role a wealth of legislative experience, deep understanding of parliamentary procedure, and an unflinching commitment to the defence of democratic ideals,” it added.

In his new role, Ogene will serve as the principal voice of the Minority Caucus, responsible for communicating its positions on national issues and engaging with the public on legislative developments.

The caucus stressed that effective communication is crucial at a time when opposition voices are expected to contribute meaningfully to governance, accountability and national debate.

“As Spokesperson, Hon. Ogene, an award-winning journalist and editor, will articulate the positions of the Minority Caucus on national issues, ensure effective communication with the Nigerian people, and uphold the caucus’s constitutional duty of holding the Executive to account,” the statement said.

It added that his background in journalism and legislative affairs would strengthen the caucus’ ability to engage citizens and promote transparency in governance.

“The caucus is confident that his appointment will strengthen its engagement with citizens and reinforce the principles of checks and balances in the 10th Assembly,” it stated

The Minority Caucus also called on journalists, media organisations and the public to support the new spokesperson in the discharge of his responsibilities.

“The Minority Caucus urges members of the press and the public to accord Hon. Ogene all necessary cooperation as he discharges this responsibility on behalf of the caucus,” it added.

In parliamentary democracies, minority caucuses play a vital role in scrutinising government policies, contributing alternative viewpoints and ensuring accountability in governance. In Nigeria’s House of Representatives, the Minority Caucus is composed of lawmakers from opposition parties and remains central to legislative oversight.

Ogene’s appointment is expected to further energise the caucus’ public engagement strategy as the 10th National Assembly continues deliberations on key national issues.
