Two suspected thieves have been beaten to death by an irate mob after they were allegedly caught attempting to dispossess a commercial motorcyclist of his motorcycle in Nasko, Niger State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, who disclosed the development in a statement on Monday detailing police operations across several states.
Iniedu said police operatives intervened after the suspects were attacked by the mob, but the two men had already died.
“The remains of the deceased were recovered and deposited at the General Hospital, Nasko, while investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those involved,” he said.
The case, according to the police spokesperson, is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Minna.
Meanwhile, police operatives in Imo State arrested three suspected terrorist collaborators, including the alleged owner of a terrorist camp.
The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit on August 21, with two AK rifles recovered from them.
One of the weapons, an AK-49, was allegedly linked to the killing of a Homeland Security Guard, while the second, an AK-47, was reportedly stolen during an attack on Agwa Police Station in 2022.
The police said the suspects remained in custody as investigation continued to unravel their alleged links to a wider terrorist network.
In Taraba State, police arrested a 50-year-old suspected manufacturer of illegal firearms and recovered six firearms and weapons-making equipment.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday following credible intelligence.
Four locally made Dane guns and two single-barrel guns were recovered from him, while the police said efforts were ongoing to recover more weapons and arrest other suspects allegedly connected to the operation.
In Plateau State, police operatives and other security personnel reportedly repelled an attack on Tanjol Village in Riyom Local Government Area.
The attackers fled into the surrounding forest following the intervention of security forces. A subsequent joint search-and-rescue operation led to the recovery of two injured security personnel, who were taken to hospital for treatment.
Similarly, police in Bauchi State arrested a suspect over the alleged fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old man during a fight in Bauchi metropolis on Saturday.
The knife allegedly used in the incident was recovered as an exhibit, while the State Criminal Investigation Department continued investigation.
In Gombe State, detectives arrested a suspect over the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy in Gudukku District, Nafada Local Government Area.
The police said the victim sustained a serious head injury during a disagreement before his death, adding that the suspect was assisting investigators.
In Ogun State, police also arrested one suspect following a report of threats and an alleged cult-related attack in Kajola, Ikenne Local Government Area.
The police said efforts were underway to apprehend other suspects who reportedly fled the scene.
The Force Public Relations Officer assured that investigations into the various incidents were ongoing, with the police working to identify and apprehend other suspects linked to the cases.
