Shock and grief have enveloped the academic community in Kogi State following the discovery of the lifeless body of a final-year student of along the Lokoja-Abuja Highway.
The deceased, identified as Sarah Idoko, was reportedly found dead on Saturday night near the Crusher area along the Felele axis of Lokoja after suspected assailants allegedly dumped her body by the roadside.
Eyewitnesses said a vehicle was seen stopping briefly at the location around 8 p.m. before speeding off. Passers-by later discovered the body and alerted security operatives.
Although initial reports suggested that the victim was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, police later confirmed that she was a final-year student of Federal University Lokoja.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, said investigations had commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and identify those responsible.
“The command is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and track down those responsible,” the police chief said.
He assured residents that the outcome of the investigation would be made public and pledged that justice would be pursued.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among student groups, with the Association of Nigeria Female Students (Kogi Chapter) condemning the killing and demanding a thorough investigation.
The association described the incident as cruel and unacceptable, urging security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and strengthen security around campuses and student communities.
The death of the undergraduate has once again raised concerns over safety along the Felele corridor, a major gateway into Lokoja that has witnessed several security incidents in recent years.
As police intensify investigations, residents and students are demanding swift justice for the slain student.
