The National Examinations Council (NECO) has denied recent reports suggesting that it owes allowances to its examiners, asserting that all 72,138 examiners engaged for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) have been fully paid.
NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, clarified this on Wednesday, stating that the council initiated payments on October 4, 2024, and completed them by November 13.
According to Sani, NECO used a bank-by-bank payment approach to streamline the process and facilitate reconciliation.
“NECO has completed the payment of examiners’ allowances as of today, Wednesday, 13th November 2024, in line with the Council’s payment plan,” the statement read.
The statement also addressed issues of incorrect bank details submitted by some examiners, which NECO has since resolved.
Sani explained that all 24 banks used in the payment process had been cleared, debunking the social media allegations that NECO deliberately withheld payments.
He advised those engaged by NECO to seek clarification directly from the council rather than resorting to media channels for unresolved issues.
“NECO values the contributions of its examiners and ad-hoc staff to the effective conduct of its examinations and will not overlook their remuneration,” Sani concluded, reassuring examiners of the council’s commitment to their welfare.
