Rivers Crisis:Blame Fubara for Lawlessness, Wike’s Aide

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has advised Afenifere chieftain Dr. Femi Okurounmu to refrain from engaging in sensitive political matters where his objectivity could be questioned.

This statement follows Okurounmu’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu and Minister Wike regarding the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.

Dr. Okurounmu recently accused President Tinubu of being “laid-back” on the Rivers crisis and suggested that Wike was attempting to exert undue influence over Governor Sim Fubara’s administration.

However, Olayinka countered these allegations, contending that the real issue stems from Governor Fubara’s alleged disregard for judicial rulings, a move he claimed poses serious risks to democratic stability.

“It’s surprising that Dr. Okurounmu, a former Senator, would overlook the implications of Governor Fubara’s actions, which include ignoring court decisions,” Olayinka remarked, adding that these actions could destabilize democracy and threaten national peace.

Olayinka questioned the validity of Okurounmu’s claims, stating that the FCT Minister has made no attempt to control Fubara. “When did Wike express a desire for Governor Fubara to act as his surrogate?” he asked, urging Okurounmu to adopt a more objective stance.

He further highlighted recent incidents, allegedly involving Governor Fubara, including the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex and the attempt to legislate with only three members out of a 32-member assembly—actions which Olayinka argued fall short of constitutional requirements.

In October 2024, the Court of Appeal nullified the Rivers State 2024 budget. Olayinka cited Fubara’s continued implementation of this budget as an example of his alleged disregard for the judiciary, reinforcing a pattern of defiance that he said undermines democratic governance.

Responding to Okurounmu’s call for greater action from President Tinubu, Olayinka asked, “Should the President disregard judicial rulings or support lawlessness?” underscoring that adherence to legal processes is essential for democracy.

The unfolding debate highlights pressing concerns over governance and the rule of law in Rivers State. As stakeholders weigh in on these matters, many are calling for resolutions that prioritize stability, democratic values, and respect for the judiciary.
