Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) have strengthened collaboration to protect critical power infrastructure, amid rising cases of vandalism affecting electricity supply across the country.
This follows a high-level courtesy visit by the ONSA delegation to NERC, where both agencies agreed on a coordinated approach to safeguard assets within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Welcoming the delegation, NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, commended ONSA’s role in securing national assets and stressed the urgency of sustained inter-agency cooperation to address growing threats to electricity infrastructure.
He noted that enhanced synergy between both institutions is crucial to improving power supply reliability and protecting investments in the sector.
“We must deepen collaboration to secure critical electricity assets and ensure stability in power supply nationwide,” Oseni said.
In his remarks, the Director of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection at ONSA, Air Vice Marshal Enebong Effiom, also emphasized the need for stronger coordination to effectively tackle vandalism and related security challenges in the power sector.
As part of the resolutions reached, both parties agreed to establish a joint stakeholders’ forum aimed at combating infrastructure vandalism across the country.
They also proposed the development of a shared database to track electricity assets, document vandalism incidents, and monitor infractions in order to better assess and respond to security threats.
Additionally, the agencies resolved to create a unified reporting platform to enable real-time incident reporting, facilitate swift arrests, and support the prosecution of offenders.
The partnership is expected to enhance energy security, reduce infrastructure losses, and strengthen the overall performance of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
