Niger Horror: Gunmen Kill Five, Abduct Scores, Torch Shiroro Community

At least five people have been killed and several others abducted after heavily armed terrorists stormed Bagna community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, setting homes and farmlands ablaze in a devastating early morning raid on Tuesday.

The brazen attack, which forced residents to flee en masse to neighbouring communities, saw over 150 gunmen riding on motorcycles invade the village, shooting sporadically to instill fear before unleashing destruction on the area.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers, moving in coordinated groups and setting buildings on fire with explosives, leaving thick smoke billowing across the community.

“Over 160 terrorists invaded Bagna early this morning and have been burning houses with explosives,” a resident, who requested anonymity, told journalists.

“As I speak to you this evening, Bagna community is still on fire, with heavy smoke rising from homes that have been razed,” he added.

The assault left at least eight local vigilante members injured as they attempted to repel the attackers but were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the invaders. The injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby health facility.

Sources revealed that the attackers had, a day earlier, rustled cattle from nearby Nada village but reportedly strayed into Bagna, where they launched the deadly operation.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said the attack occurred around 6:30 a.m. on April 7, 2026.

“Information received indicated that armed bandits invaded Bagna village and later moved to Erena village,” he said.

Abiodun disclosed that a joint security team was swiftly deployed to the area and successfully pushed the attackers out, although casualties were recorded.

“Unfortunately, two vigilante members and one of the drivers from the joint security team lost their lives during the attack, while others sustained injuries,” he added.

As security operations continue in the area, displaced residents remain in fear, with many uncertain about when they can safely return to their homes.
