The Federal Government has clarified that reports of a fresh ban on Nigerian domestic workers in Kuwait are inaccurate, stating that the restriction stems from an earlier decision taken by Nigeria to safeguard its citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on August 1, 2026 and signed by its Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
According to the Ministry, the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait had, years ago, formally requested a suspension of the recruitment and deployment of Nigerian domestic workers to the country pending the resolution of concerns over their welfare and working conditions.
“The issue is not of a fresh ban imposed by the Kuwaiti authorities on Nigerian domestic workers, but rather a continuation of measures earlier adopted by the Embassy to ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of its citizens,” the statement said.
The Ministry noted that the move was aimed at addressing longstanding concerns relating to the protection, welfare and treatment of Nigerian domestic workers in Kuwait.
It added that both countries are continuing diplomatic engagements to establish a framework that guarantees fair recruitment practices, legal protection and decent working conditions for Nigerian workers.
“Competent authorities from both sides will continue to engage with a view to establishing a mutually beneficial framework,” the Ministry stated.
The government also urged the public and media organisations to verify information from official sources before publication to avoid spreading misleading reports that could cause unnecessary concern among Nigerians in Kuwait and their families.
