Nigeria Condoles China Over Gansu Landslide, 21 Dead

ABUJA, Nigeria — July 8, 2026 — The Federal Government has expressed deep condolences to China following a devastating landslide in Tanchang County, Gansu Province, which has claimed at least 21 lives.

The tragedy, which occurred on Tuesday, has left several others affected as rescue operations continue. The development was contained in a statement issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.

Nigeria sympathised with the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China, offering prayers to the victims, the injured and families impacted by the disaster.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those who have lost loved ones or property in this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

The Federal Government also commended the swift response of Chinese authorities and emergency teams working to rescue victims and provide relief to affected communities.

Reaffirming bilateral ties, Nigeria noted that both countries share a long-standing strategic partnership built on mutual respect, friendship and cooperation, adding that it stands in solidarity with China during the difficult period.

Nigeria further expressed confidence in China’s resilience and its capacity to recover and rehabilitate affected areas, while offering prayers for the repose of the departed and strength for grieving families.

The landslide is one of the latest natural disasters to hit parts of China, prompting urgent rescue efforts and humanitarian response in the affected region.
