ABUJA — Nigeria has called for zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government across West Africa, warning that coups and political instability remain major threats to regional peace and development.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the call while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
In a statement delivered at the summit, Shettima stressed that sustainable development in the region cannot be achieved without stability, urging member states to uphold democratic principles and constitutional governance.
“Nigeria remains firmly committed to the principles enshrined in the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, including zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government,” he said.
He cautioned leaders against actions capable of undermining democracy, including manipulation of constitutional processes and tenure elongation, noting that good governance remains the most effective tool to prevent unrest.
“Beyond adventurism, the most effective response is to enthrone good governance that delivers tangible benefits to citizens. We must avoid the temptation to tamper with constitutional term limits,” Shettima added.
The Vice President also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for stronger regional security mechanisms, including the establishment of a Counter-Terrorism Force and the strengthening of the ECOWAS Standby Force to tackle growing security threats.
He said Nigeria would continue to work with member states to enhance intelligence sharing, joint operations and preventive diplomacy aimed at safeguarding peace and stability across the sub-region.
On broader regional challenges, Shettima urged West African leaders to deepen cooperation and maintain unity in the face of political and security pressures, emphasizing that collective action is key to preserving the relevance of ECOWAS.
He further called for sustained dialogue and engagement with all stakeholders to strengthen regional integration and ensure that governance structures remain responsive to the needs of citizens.
The Nigerian government reiterated its commitment to providing leadership in promoting democracy, peace and economic stability in West Africa.
