The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sympathy to the Government and people of China following devastating floods and landslides along the China-Nepal border.
According to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and signed by Spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi on Friday, 28 August 2026, the tragedy of 26 August resulted in the loss of over 500 lives, left hundreds injured, and caused extensive destruction in areas including Gyirong County in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
“The Government of Nigeria extends its heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China over the deadly impact of the disaster,” the statement said. It noted that the victims included Chinese and Nepali nationals as well as tourists from Australia, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries.
Nigeria also extended its sympathy to the bereaved families, the injured, the displaced, and the communities whose homes and livelihoods were severely affected by the natural disaster.
Standing in solidarity with China, the Ministry commended the prompt emergency response of Chinese authorities under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. It acknowledged progress in rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and support for affected communities.
“Nigeria salutes the courage and altruism demonstrated by the Chinese first responders and rescue teams, whose tireless efforts continue to save lives and provide critical assistance to those affected by the disaster,” the statement added.
The Government of Nigeria expressed optimism that those affected would emerge stronger through resilience and collective recovery efforts, and prayed for the repose of the dead and comfort for the injured and bereaved.
