ABUJA — The Federal Government has expressed deep condolences to the State of Qatar following the death of its former ruler, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
The late Father Amir, who reigned as Emir from 1995 to 2013, was credited with transforming Qatar into a modern and globally influential state through far-reaching economic and diplomatic reforms.
According to a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria described Sheikh Hamad as a “distinguished and visionary leader” whose legacy would endure across the Gulf region and beyond.
“His wisdom, dedication to progress, and commitment to international cooperation will be remembered fondly by the people of Qatar, the Gulf countries, and international partners,” the statement said.
On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt sympathies to the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its solidarity with Qatar during the period of mourning, offering prayers for the repose of the late leader.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with Qatar during this time of grief and prays that Almighty God grant His Highness eternal rest, while granting his family and the Qatari people strength and comfort,” the statement added.
The condolence message was conveyed in an official release issued on Sunday in Abuja.
Sheikh Hamad remains widely regarded as one of the most consequential leaders in the Gulf region’s modern history, having significantly advanced Qatar’s economic growth and global diplomatic standing.b
