Nigeria Highlights Security Efforts in Talks with Holy See

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria has outlined ongoing measures to tackle insecurity and protect religious freedom during high-level talks with the Holy See, as both sides moved to strengthen diplomatic and humanitarian cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this on Monday while hosting the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, in Abuja.

Addressing concerns around security and its impact on citizens and faith-based institutions, the minister said the Federal Government is intensifying efforts through increased recruitment of security personnel, enhanced inter-agency coordination and strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of violence.

“We remain committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring an enabling environment for religious freedom and socio-economic development,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.

The meeting also provided a platform for both parties to review bilateral relations and explore areas of deeper collaboration, particularly in peacebuilding, humanitarian interventions and social development.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu described Nigeria’s relationship with the Holy See as longstanding and value-driven, noting that it is anchored on dialogue, human dignity and the promotion of peace.

She further highlighted the role of the Catholic Church in Nigeria’s development, citing its contributions to education, healthcare, humanitarian support and community development.

“The Church continues to make significant contributions to national development and social cohesion across communities,” she noted.

Archbishop Gallagher’s visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See, a milestone both sides say underscores decades of cooperation on global and regional issues.

Discussions during the visit also covered international concerns and multilateral engagement, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to advancing peace, stability and cooperation.

The engagement reflects renewed diplomatic momentum between Nigeria and the Holy See amid evolving security and development priorities.
