Nigeria Woos Portugal Investors, Seeks Stronger Diaspora Ties

ABUJA — Nigeria has intensified efforts to attract foreign investment and strengthen diaspora engagement following high-level talks with Portugal and interactions with Nigerians in Lisbon.

The move was disclosed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its Spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Friday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, held bilateral discussions with Portugal’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Professor Paulo Rangel, on the sidelines of the EurAfrican Forum in Cascais.

The talks focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, renewable energy, maritime security, digital innovation, agriculture and education.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria is committed to building stronger economic ties and creating opportunities that will benefit both countries.

“We are focused on strengthening partnerships that will drive investment, enhance security and promote sustainable development,” she said.

Both countries also considered the establishment of a Nigeria–Portugal Joint Commission to deepen political consultations, while reviewing progress on agreements covering air services and taxation.

In a separate engagement, the minister met with members of the Nigerian community in Lisbon, where she commended their contributions to economic development.

She assured them of continued government support and urged them to remain good ambassadors of Nigeria while contributing to national growth through investments and innovation.

The engagements underscore Nigeria’s strategy to leverage foreign partnerships and diaspora networks to boost economic diplomacy and long-term development.
