NMDPRA Holds Talks on Launch of E10 Cleaner Fuel Pilot Project

Abuja — The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has convened a strategic stakeholders’ engagement to discuss implementation mechanisms for the proposed E10 pilot project, a major step towards cleaner fuel adoption in Nigeria.

E10 is a cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuel blend consisting of 10 per cent bioethanol and 90 per cent conventional petrol. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote fuel diversification and support Nigeria’s energy transition agenda in the automotive sector.

The Authority’s Economic Regulations and Strategic Planning Directorate coordinated the engagement, which brought together critical partners including NNPC Retail Limited, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), United States Grains Council, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), and the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF).

The NMDPRA began developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for the E10 fuel blend in 2024 as one of its key strategic interventions aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and diversifying Nigeria’s fuel mix away from full dependence on fossil-based petrol.

Officials described the pilot project as a foundational move that will provide valuable data for nationwide rollout while ensuring compliance with international safety and quality standards.

The collaboration with local and international partners is expected to facilitate technical expertise, feedstock supply for bioethanol production, vehicle compatibility assessments, and robust regulatory oversight for the successful deployment of E10 across selected markets in the country.

This development aligns with global trends in biofuel adoption and supports the Federal Government’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions and sustainable development in the petroleum downstream sector.

The Authority is expected to provide further updates on the timeline and locations for the E10 pilot scheme in the coming weeks.
