NNPC Limited has commissioned and handed over three rehabilitated wards to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
The intervention, executed through the NNPC Foundation Ltd./Gte., involved the full rehabilitation and upgrade of Wards G, H, and J. The project delivered a total of 100-bed capacity, complete with new beds and the installation of a modern central medical gas system aimed at improving the standard of care for patients.
The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, is a major referral centre for trauma and orthopaedic cases in Nigeria. The upgraded wards are expected to enhance treatment for road accident victims, reconstructive surgery patients, and those with musculoskeletal conditions.

Key improvements include structural renovation, replacement of beds, and the introduction of a central medical gas piping system. This will allow for safer and more efficient delivery of oxygen and other medical gases, reducing operational challenges commonly faced in public hospitals.
The handover reflects NNPC’s broader commitment to leveraging resources from the energy sector to support critical areas of national development, particularly healthcare infrastructure.
From the Energy Desk perspective, while NNPC’s core mandate centres on oil and gas operations, strategic investments in healthcare help address human development gaps that indirectly support a more productive economy. Functional medical infrastructure remains essential for reducing the long-term burden of trauma and disability on the system.
Sustainable impact will, however, depend on proper maintenance, staffing, and integration of the new facilities into the hospital’s daily operations.
This project adds to NNPC Limited’s portfolio of social investments across education and healthcare. As the company pursues commercial goals under the Petroleum Industry Act, such interventions continue to form part of its corporate responsibility to host communities and the nation at large.
