Subhead: Motorists can pay via app, generate code and dispense fuel themselves
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has commenced the rollout of self-service fuel pumps at selected NNPC Retail stations, allowing motorists to purchase and dispense petrol without assistance from station attendants.
The initiative is part of NNPC Retail’s plan to deploy between 50 and 70 smart self-service stations across the country within the next six months.
Under the new system, motorists can select the quantity or amount of petrol they want, make payment through a mobile application and use a digital code to activate the pump.
NNPC Retail, in a guide shared on its X handle on Friday, explained how motorists can use the new facility.
To access the service, motorists are required to download the NRL Fuel App and select the “Fuel Purchase” option.
They will then choose their preferred fuel type and select an NNPC Retail station offering the self-service facility. Participating stations are identified by a green “Self-Serve” badge beside their names on the app.
After selecting a station, customers enter the amount they wish to spend, review the quantity and price displayed, and proceed to pay from their wallet.
Once payment is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing the customer’s Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.
At the fuel pump, the customer enters the eight-digit Self-Service Code on the terminal and presses the hash key to validate the transaction.
The nozzle can then be picked up and the customer dispenses the exact quantity of fuel paid for.
NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative was part of efforts to transform conventional filling stations into broader energy and mobility hubs.
At the newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said customers could complete transactions with their phones before dispensing the exact amount of fuel purchased.
The company said the smart stations would combine conventional petrol sales with other mobility and energy services, including electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG).
NNPC said the self-service facility is currently available only at selected stations as the rollout continues nationwide.
