Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has fulfilled his N50 million scholarship promise to Miss Davina Ogheneovo, a Junior Technical Two student of Model Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area.
The governor fulfilled the pledge on Monday when he received Davina, her mother, the school principal, the local government council chairman, the Commissioner for Technical Education and other officials at Government House, Asaba.
Davina attracted the governor’s attention after delivering an impressive extempore speech during the inauguration of the college last Friday.
Oborevwori said the scholarship was part of his administration’s commitment to promoting education, rewarding excellence and investing in the future of young people.
He described education as a lasting legacy, recalling that Delta students who emerged world champions at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, received N20 million each. He added that the state also recognises outstanding university graduates.
According to the governor, Davina’s confidence, eloquence and composure during her speech, despite attempts to distract her, convinced him that she deserved support to pursue her educational ambitions.
“Education remains with you for life. You may acquire wealth and other things, but education is the best legacy you can give your children,” he said.
The governor directed that the scholarship funds be paid into a dedicated account managed by Davina’s parents exclusively for her education. He added that she would take control of the account when she turns 18.
He assured Davina and her family that the scholarship would cover her education through the technical college and university, reducing the financial burden on her parents.
Oborevwori also recalled an earlier intervention in which he rescued an abused boy and offered him a scholarship. According to him, the boy had completed secondary school and was now attending university.
He said the experience reinforced his determination to support vulnerable children and provide opportunities for young people to achieve their dreams.
Davina, who hopes to become a medical doctor, thanked the governor for the scholarship, describing it as an opportunity to pursue her ambition.
She also commended the administration for providing modern facilities at the college and promised to remain focused on her studies to justify the confidence placed in her.
Her mother, Mrs Berkeley Ogheneovo, described the scholarship as an unexpected gesture that would support her daughter’s education through university.
She explained that she chose the technical college because of her belief in technical education and its capacity to equip young people with practical skills for the future.
The Commissioner for Technical Education, Smart Ufoh, said the scholarship demonstrated the state government’s commitment to educational development and the nurturing of promising students.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Christian Onogba, commended the governor for establishing the college in the area.
He said the institution would equip young people with technical skills to promote self-reliance, entrepreneurship and economic development.
Onogba pledged the council’s support for protecting the school’s infrastructure and urged residents to take ownership of the institution by safeguarding its facilities.
