Ogun Woman Arrested After Attempting to Drown Five-Month-Old Daughter in River


The Ogun State Police Command has reported the arrest of 30-year-old Olubunmi Ajayi for allegedly attempting to drown her five-month-old daughter, Imole Anifowose, in the RSS River in Sagamu. The incident occurred on Sunday, leading to the swift intervention of a passerby, Olusola Sonaya, who rescued the baby from the water.

According to a statement from the state police command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the incident took place at approximately 5:30 pm on January 21, 2024. The humanitarian observer witnessed Ajayi dropping her infant into the river and promptly rushed to the scene, preventing a potential tragedy.

Imole Anifowose was immediately taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for medical attention. As of the latest update, the baby is reported to be in stable condition.

The statement outlined the details of the attempted murder case, stating, “The mother has been apprehended and currently under observation to ascertain her mental health.” Efforts are underway to contact relatives or the husband for the appropriate welfare of the baby at the hospital.

The incident raises concerns about the mental well-being of the mother, and authorities are taking steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted act. The quick response of Olusola Sonaya prevented a tragic outcome, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance in such situations.
