The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, over the alleged murder of 23-year-old nursing student, Miss Vivian Chilaka, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
Chilaka was allegedly killed on June 14, 2026, in an incident that sparked widespread concern within the community and beyond.
The suspect was arrested on September 4 following what the police described as credible and actionable information, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu.
The arrest also led to the exoneration of the deceased’s landlord, who had earlier been suspected in connection with the murder.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that Ibekwe allegedly gained access to the building by climbing over the fence with the aid of a ladder.
The Command said the suspect allegedly intended to sexually assault the nursing student but that a struggle ensued between him and the deceased.
During the alleged struggle, the suspect reportedly used a knife to stab Chilaka, resulting in her death.
The police said the suspect had also allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents in the community.
However, the Command stressed that the claims were still being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration.
The police subsequently cleared the deceased’s landlord, who had earlier come under suspicion, urging members of the public to disregard previous allegations against him.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigation continues, particularly into his alleged involvement in other criminal incidents.
Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support during the investigation.
Ama also praised members of the community who provided timely and useful information that helped the police make what he described as a significant breakthrough.
The commissioner assured that the Command would continue to pursue all credible leads and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in policing and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes do not escape justice.
