Protest Erupts in Lafia as Supreme Court Affirms Governor Abdullahi Sule’s Election

Following the Supreme Court’s declaration affirming Governor Abdullahi Sule as duly elected in Nasarawa State, protests erupted in Lafia, the state capital. Supporters of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) took to the streets, blocking the Lafia-Jos road and setting tires on fire. The protest disrupted traffic, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

The demonstrators expressed their dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision, and the situation escalated, leading to the closure of shops, business centers, and schools within the Lafia metropolis for the safety of students and residents. Amidst the unrest, an automobile mechanic, Mallam Abdullahi Sani, called for the deployment of security operatives to restore calm.

The protest signifies the intensity of the political tensions surrounding the court’s decision and highlights the challenges in managing post-election outcomes. The security situation is crucial, and the authorities may need to take swift measures to ensure public safety and prevent further escalation.
