Rivers Assembly Cracks Whip on Oil Firm, Summons Heirs Energies Over Community Petition

The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned the management of Heirs Energies Limited to appear before lawmakers over a petition filed by the Omuohia Community in Igwuruta Town, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The company has been directed to appear before the House on Monday, July 20, 2026, by 10:00 a.m. at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters.

The summons was conveyed in a letter dated July 7, 2026, and signed by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Emeka Amadi, following the Assembly’s consideration of the report of its Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions.

Lawmakers expressed displeasure over what they described as the company’s repeated refusal to honour several invitations extended by the committee during its investigation of the petition.

The Assembly condemned the action, saying it amounted to a deliberate disregard for the legislative process.

According to the House resolution, members “registered their displeasure and condemned in strong terms the wilful refusal of Heirs Energies Limited to appear before the Committee despite several invitations to this effect.”

The lawmakers warned that they would not hesitate to invoke their constitutional powers under Section 129 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) if the company failed to honour the latest summons.

The Assembly urged the management of Heirs Energies to treat the invitation with utmost urgency.

Part of the letter read: “At the Fourth Legislative Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Tenth Assembly, the House considered the Report of the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions on the petition by Omuohia Community in Igwuruta Town against Heirs Energies Limited and resolved to register its displeasure and condemn, in strong terms, the wilful refusal of Heirs Energies Limited to appear before the Committee despite several invitations to this effect.

“You are hereby invited to appear before the House with your management team on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters.

“And be warned that the House will not hesitate to invoke its powers in consonance with Section 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), if you fail to appear accordingly. Please treat this invitation as a matter of utmost priority.”

The petition before the Assembly was filed by the Omuohia Community in Igwuruta Town, although details of the grievances were not disclosed in the summons.
